Heading south from Medina, we climb into the mountains to reach the city of Taif. This is a different Saudi Arabia, we have moved from the undulating desert with odd outcrops of rock to real jagged 2,000 metre mountains. Taif is Saudi's summer retreat, being high and therefore cool, and there are 55 palaces in the city. These range from those owned by the 2,000 strong Saudi royal family, hidden behind large gates, to abandoned semi-derelict old palaces. Taif is also the centre of the rose growing area where 900 farms produce over 300 million roses each year; many are turned into rose water perfume. There are a many traditional stone watch towers still standing in the mountains and one of the traditional stone villages has been restored. Its 58 stone houses, last occupied fifty years ... read more

Saudi Arabia has only just opened up to tourists, the first visas becoming available in 2019 for just a few months before Covid struck. We start in the capital city of Riyadh where the temperature when we land on a November evening is 25c. Riyadh is still a work in progress. There is already some great modern architecture but the city's metro is just a series of bridges and holes in the ground. The only way to get around is to walk or drive and almost nobody walks. There are lots of shopping malls, all rather empty of shoppers and two more malls are being built, both claiming to be the largest in the world. Above one mall rises the Kingdom Tower, a 99 story twin tower with a bridge between its spires. When built it ... read more

I have spent most of 2021 working Northwest Saudi Arabia on various projects. It's been exhausting, but the scenery is completely gorgeous. Without going into detail, here are some highlights: Al Ula - Take 1 We previously worked here back in 2019 for a mapping campaign. It was impressive and amazing to see the progress they had done since we were here. We were staying in Tabuk, but while waiting between projects, we decided to take a trip to the prettiest place in Saudi Arabia, and friendliest, to get some Moussaka. We had this every night when we mapped and missed it. First, we stopped at the Winter Park in the main part of town, hoping to get tickets to see Mada'in Saleh, since it was closed when we were working here before. Unfortunately, since it ... read more

What makes something valuable? This question is long debated by the economists and traders throughout the world. Marx would say my mother’s rhubarb crumble should be valued at the sum of the ingredients plus the effort of the chef. And given that Mum can whip one up in minutes and the rhubarb grew in the garden, Marx and I may disagree on the value. Keynes might argue value is defined by scarcity and demand for the pudding. Truly, everyone knows that my mother is singular in perfecting this treat, whilst demand is from all the family. Thus, Mum could drive a high price yet it is provided freely! You should however “Mind your Ps & Qs” as Val would have said – the cost of a lack of politeness will weigh heavy on your heart. Both ... read more

Now that Saudi Arabia has opened up and embraced tourism, I feel that I can post some of my experiences I have had there in the past year while working on various projects. Our company has a large presence there and since it is so big, we often need to help out from our Dubai (regional) office. I am currently helping to train the geologists and engineers while we put a new structure in place. Additionally, we had a few consulting projects that require geologists like me, who have a background in geohazards. When people think of Saudi Arabia and the Middle East in general, they think "Desert" - sand, no vegetation, barren... Yes, you do get a lot (LOT) of that, but there are also mountains, wadis, coasts, islands... So, two of the locations that ... read more

Being assigned to work in a remote area where you can only see vast deserts and camels makes someone a stranger when the latter had a chance to visit the city. A lot has changed since I've visited this place. The developments in this area have made it more attractive to locals, tourists and expat like me. A nice sea view, lots of green and breezy weather compared to our work site which is dry and barren. Al-Khobar is a big city, and one of the cleanest and neatest with huge shopping malls, hotels, wide streets, and high-rise buildings. Btw, Al-Khobar has become the first city in the MENA region to benefit from a pilot project on the fifth-generation wireless network, or 5G network. Come now and visit Al-Khobar!... read more

Ever wonder alone in the vastness of the sand as far as the eyes can see? Feeling the gust of wind touching your face under the mighty sun. Warm, you feel warm as you stare into nothingness. You will feel alone and you will miss your home. But at the back of your mind... you're stuck where you are standing. You plead as you are deprived of some pleasures of life... And you wish someone out there is longing to be with you for a while. Yet you are still standing in the vastness of the sand. You hope you can move the hands of time. Having this feeling of loneliness... Even the mighty will fall.... read more

Middle East » Saudi Arabia » Khobar December 23rd 2016

Never too late to post this 2016 Christmas gathering with colleagues though simple, we enjoyed celebrating it away from home. This is as usual for expats working in the foreign land and the challenge is that you are in a country that does not celebrate this kind of holiday season. Got teary eyed when this time of the year comes around while I'm here. How one will wish to be back home to celebrate Christmas with family and friends. Now this is the mouth-watering part of the celebration: We all agreed to meet on Friday-off on December 23rd at Hot Pot Restaurant in 4th St, Thuqbah, Al Khobar. This is a smokeless Grill and Shabu-Shabu Restaurant where you can cook-and-eat-all-you-can!! 'till your gut explodes (LOL-just joking) with variety of choices to cook-and-eat like shrimp, dumplings, marinated ... read more

Spending my Friday-off at Corniche Al-Khobar, an extension of Half Moon Bay via Aziza beach stretching to the city of Dammam where green spaces abound along the coast where friends and families both local and expats go to enjoy a spectacular sea views. You will see lots of Kabayans here enjoying their weekend with families and friends. Some of them play RC car while others are fishing and patiently waiting for a catch. Others enjoy riding on their bicycles, jogging or having small snacks with a cup of coffee or tea. All work stress are relieved with the spectacular view of the sea.... read more
