Well, this will be my first entry. So far, my few days in Israel have been pretty uneventful, hanging out with my cousins in Rishon. We've gone out a bit, and yesterday I went to a museum in Tel Aviv. My initial week plans were changed because my friend was last minute not able to come to Israel with me, so I'm staying at my cousins an extra couple days, and then will move on to Jerusalem as I planned. There is much I still need to do to get my program squared away, and I hope to be able to secure more funding, but I'm not sure at this point. This being my first blog, I'm not sure how it will go, and how often I'll get the chance to update it, but I hope ... read more

Tarmar and I arrived in Tel Aviv and we got to her apartment on Jabotinsky where she lives with her sister and dog Fudge. I spent the next few weeks enjoying the life of a big city, much like NYC. I watched all of the World Cup games and had wonderful dinners. I got to know Tamar's family and even took a day trip to Jeruselum. I even got to meet up with my cousin Marc Kraemer who was in Israel to see his wife and daughter. But, after five weeks in Tel Aviv, I realized I would not be happy there (especially as EVERYONE smokes all of the time, everywhere). So, I packed up my backpack, secured a flight to NYC (even though my round the work ticket expired, I still got British Airways to ... read more

Today our group traveled to the Western Wall. The place considered to be the Holliest for Jews in the World. We entered through tight security to get to the Western Wall. Once inside the women in our group were yelled at to cover their shoulders. There were some orthodox Jews handing out the wrap to put on for prayers. I put one on and was given a sheet of paper with the prayer on it. I headed over to the wall and began to pray and to put a note in the wall. During that time others and I were constantly bothered by guys trying to sell little red strings. I finished my prayer, removed the wrap, and silently left the wall. I am not a religious person but for a few moments I was the ... read more

We woke up early this morning to get a start on the day in Tel Aviv. We had only a few hours of sleep after a night out on town in the heart of Tel Aviv. My group pushed through the sleep deprevation and went to view the Indenpendence Hall where David Ben-Gurion proclaimed Israel's independence in 1948. After visiting Independence Hall we travel to Rabin square where during a peace rally the Prime Minister of Israel Yitzak Rabbin was assassinated by an Israeli. There is a memorial for the Prime Minister and by the Memorial is markers on the ground where the Prime Minister, the Killer, and the body guards where standing and looking. Its amazing that a man could shoot the Prime Minister when there was six body guards standing around him. Afterwards we ... read more

The day started early as we left the Sea of Galilee. Passing date palms along the road we stopped at the Kinneret Cemetary. Upon cemetary was located on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. It was filled with date palms, trees, flowers, and cobblestone paths along the graves. Our tour guide told us about the original Zionist settlers in what is modern day Israel. We were told about how they came to this land, developed the Hebrew language, drained the swamps, learned to defend themeselves, and lived hard and difficult lives. After leaving the Kinneret Cemetary we drove a little south to an Arab village in the north of Israel near a town called Karmel. We were taken to a High School were we met Arab highschool students. What struck me was how similar the ... read more

Air Travel in All its Glory My adventure started off at 6:30 am Saturday June 3rd. My first leg of the journey from Austin, TX to JFK airport was comfortable and enjoyable. I arrived at JFK at noon but I had to wait till 7:00 pm to meet my tour group and receive our tickets for our flight on El Al airlines. After receiving our tickets from our tour leader we then had to pass through El Al's customs and security screeners. The security personnel of El Al grilled my questions about why I wanted to go to Israel. Asked me what Jewish holidays I celebrated and what did they mean. And some other personal questions. Finally we boarded the plane at 11:30 pm and were seated in our accommadations for the next 10 1/2 hour ... read more
