In Israel, it always seems everything is touched in some way by the underlying history and politics of the area. From the little exhibits in Jaffa of the spot where they brought the cedar trees for the temple of Solomon or where Noah's son settled after the flood or where Napolean's troops laid siege to the memorial for the 20+ youth killed in the disco bombing in Tel Aviv to the questions about why no English guidebooks have been updated on Israel since 2000 or why no credit card company will insure rental cars here, everything seems to have historical or political overtones. We are staying with our friends Dov and Shoshi in their quiet neighborhood near the sleek new Ben Gurion Airport. If we keep them talking long enough, we learn a lot, as ... read more

On the plane on the way from Holland to Israel, I thought about what it was that I wanted to accomplish on this trip. Getting to Israel in the first place seemed like such a miracle. I didn't want to have the whole trip pass as just a tourist venture. What would I do when I walked off the plane, onto Israeli soil? What would I think, what would I feel? I wrote in my journal: I want to hurt. I want to be sad because I can't be in the land, and when I finally put my foot on it, I want to feel as if I've truely come home. Not because the people there accept me, because, quite possibly, they won't. But I want to know that I've come home because this is the ... read more

That's it. It's been great. It's been amazing. It's been 39 weeks of traveling: Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australia, Israel, India and Nepal. And it's all here in my blog. I have no idea how many hours I spent on this blog - a hundred, maybe 200? I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. Writing, selecting the pictures - I felt really creative. So now I am back home, this time not just to visit. I move to my new apartment tomorrow, I'll start working soon. So it's time for farewell… I'll be back when I'm ready for another journey! ... read more

Jisses. Sedan har de ju sakerhetskontroll overallt, ... read more

Well, we took off Thursday night from JFK on El Al. They did ask us about the extra bags of clothes we were taking over for tzedaka (charity) but then sent us through with a smile after making sure we were who we said we were. Met up in the airport with Peter from the Rye Community Synagogue, as we are three temples sharing this tour. The rest of the Rye group was on the plane; I sat next to the rabbi my friend Dan. The third group, from Barnert temple in Franklin Lakes, NJ, went on an earlier flight. The flight itself was full; and as uncomfortable as a 10 hour flight is expected to be. Did see a fun movie, then slept a bit. Landed around 2:30 pm at Ben Gurion airport in Lod, ... read more

Everything is ready I don't have an apartment anymore - I moved everything today. It's a funny feeling that I have no apartment key on my key chain. Well, from tomorrow I won't have a key chain anymore. The last two days were so unbelievably hard and tiring. But now it's behind me. So this is my last post from Tel Aviv Kisses kisses kisses to all my family and friends, those that I managed to see and those that I missed (my lousy flu last week :-( Try to have fun here too (and in Europe & USA, wherever you are)... See you in my next post - hopefully from Hong Kong. ... read more

When my sister was in New Zealand she brought me a gift: a picture book. Now that I am packing all my stuff I ran into it again. Imagine. It's after 2AM, I am tired but I make myself go on with the work, and then I take a break. I make a cup of tea. I open the book. I take a deep breath. The pictures are amazing. Most wonderful views. Places I actually intend to visit myself. Unbelievable. Then I think to myself "Am I not lucky????" OK, back to packing boxes, but with new energy :-)... read more

So many things are happening for the first time, so why not write a blog? In 9 days from today I will go to the airport with a big backpack, board the flight to Hong Kong, and start my big backpacking experience! I’ve been playing with the idea ever since I got single again, but it scared me quite a lot to travel for a long time, on my own. After all, I am not the average backpacker age, I didn’t sleep in hostels since I was 18 (unless we consider the officers course in the army, where we were 14 girls in a room. But that was also many years ago :-), and what about wearing the same 2-3 pants and shirts for 6 months??? Is that ME? But the world kept calling me. And ... read more
