I will spend the next 24 hours remembering.... the Lebanon War of last summer where friends were called up to reserve duty, and others died protecting their country the stories of the Israeli heroes I was taught as a teenager in pursuit of a love for a country I where I was not raised my friends Ben, Marla and Janis who were killed in a bombing at Hebrew University almost 5 years ago the soldiers who were kidnapped last summer...and whose families are still awaiting word of their well-being or return home the wars, right or wrong, left or right, in offense or defense, of a country I call my home the songs and poems, written or sung, in rememberance of family members, lovers or friends lost to the atrocities of what defending one's country can ... read more

I have recently gotten some complaints that I have not continued my blog through Israel. Perhaps it is because I feel like I am home, and who blogs about their home? Apparently, many people do...and so what follows are vignets of being home...but in a different way then I have been home before. Every morning I wake up in Tel Aviv, Israel's non-existent equivalent for New York. The number of times I hear Israelis compare Tel Aviv to New York is hysterical. Perhaps one could compare it to a neighborhood of New York, say...Soho...but to do so would be denying both cities of their incredible uniqueness. Tel Aviv is thriving, vibrant, young and old crammed together on pavements that are uneven, and yet remarkably cleaner than India. The streets are as likely to have trashy, russian-clad ... read more

All of my friends who had been there before were jealous, and they knew what a pleasure it is to visit Israel. And when the passangers started clapping when the airplane landed I understood what they were talking about - welcome to beautiful Isreal. The airport was Clean and bright, the nice immigration lady asked me if I wanted my passport stamped (no thanks) and the smell of orange trees greeted me as I stepped outside. It was a bit disconcerting that the taxi driver had no idea where my hotel was, but a quick call to his buddy for directions solved the problem. Israel is an interesting fusion of old and new, east and west. This is apparent in most things such as the architecture and the food. Food. Always one of my favorite ... read more

On this day we spent far too much time on the bus, but we first went to the Youth Village spnsered by Hadassah which is by Carmel, it was amazing. They started by serving troubled youth and now serve 250 youth in a boarding school type program that either are referred by social services or come from other countries and meager backgrounds wanting to move to Israel, as well as 300 youth from the area who are exceptional students who come as a day program---the school has a technical program, an agricultural program, and arts and performing arts program and a science program, they are winning awards all of the time and the students we met were truly exceptional! They havea much higher matriculation rate than the rest of the country and many students come back ... read more

On our first full day in Tel Aviv we woke up at 6am and had breakfast---the most amazing breakfast---traditional Israeli breakfast is yogurt, fruits, cucumbers, tomatoes, olives, breads and cheeses and this breakfast had all of that plus waffles, pancakes, pastries, sushi (yes, sushi) cereal, salads, soup, eggs, potatoes, cassaroles, about 6 types of juices....it was unbelieveable! Then we walked throughTel Aviv to Independance hall where we heard about the day where Israel was declared a state and how Golda Mier had traveled to the US to fundraise to support the war they knew was being threatened on them for becoming the state of Israel and how she raised twice as much as all of the men had set as the goal...then the day they declared the State of Israel Egypt bombed them and how you ... read more

So, my internship is over. Goodbye to Branco Weiss (the name of the organization). It was a bumpy ride, but not without its positive moments and people. So, I wanted to tell you guys about some of the special teachers and students I met while working in these schools in Israel. Yasu is a thirty-something man. He came to Israel from Ethiopia, part of the lost tribes of Israel. In the 1980s, the Israeli government found this “lost tribe” of Israel, in Ethiopia. At the time, Ethiopia was a very dangerous place for Jews, as there was a war going on. The Israeli government at the time, decided that they needed to do something to rescue these newly found Jews. They did a secret military operation and airlifted hundreds of these Ethiopian Jews. This wasn’t like ... read more

Hey Folks... so I know I have been MIA lately, and well, theres lots of reasons for that. But, I have a few entries to add now, so it should catch you up on most things. I meant to write this weeks ago, but February passed with a blink of an eye. In the beginning of February was the holiday of Tu Be’shevat. This is the holiday of trees, and in general, the beginning of spring. Kind of like the American Labor Day, with a religious combination. Traditionally, you go and plant a tree, and eat lots of the fruits and seeds from the trees, from nature. I spent the weekend with my cousins for Shabbat. Saturday, we had a big lunch with my cousins from Rishon, their uncle and cousins, and the grandparents. Zev, the ... read more

The next morning it was time to get up early, which means getting up at 8:30 (lol) Alex and Eti planned a trip with some people into the negev, doing a picknik there and having a good time spending time with brothers and sisters from different congregations. The drive was pretty long and took us about 4 hours till we arrived. I never heard of this place before. It is where Israelis go in spring for picknicks, motocross, walks and pleasant drives. I cant even remember the name of the place. All I know that it was south of Netivot. We had stops at different places, did some walking, enjoyed the green scenery among multicolored flowers, orange trees and cactusses. After the past days of sightseeing this was a very relaxing and pleasant trip. I ... read more
