So, I have been sick. It has been most unfortunate, especially at the end of my program. Thankfully, I am FINALLY starting to get better (thank you antibiotics!). So, with all this free time of lying in bed, although most of it, I was too lethargic to be able to do anything, I've had lots of time to think about lots of random junk, and I thought, hey, its time for some anecdotes and political commentary maybe. I'm not sure how many of you were aware, but a couple weeks ago, there was a suicide bombing in Eilat, in Israel. Eilat, is the southern most tip of Israel, and is known purely as a resort town, and major tourist destination for Europeans. I only happened to hear about it when I was at one of the ... read more

So do you know what's weird? I flew home from Israel on Janurary 14th and that is the last time I will have to fly back to the states to live. Because in less than 4 weeks, I will be the newest immigrant to the state of Israel. That's kinda mind-blowing. It's been a crazy month of January. Not only did I have to get all 40 of my participants ready for the trip (I staff birthright trips) but then I also had to pack a bag of stuff to leave in the country with my best friend until I come back in February. Then, I had to pack my own bag because I needed clothes for the 10 days, plus stuff I could wear in Florida for my other vacation after Eretz Y'Israel. (Land of ... read more

Happy New Year!!! This is my official new years greeting to all my readers, even though its already a week past. Here in Israel, the holiday is mysteriously called Sylvester... but I'll get to that in a few minutes. So, I last left off on my return from my trip to Eilat and the Negev and Chanukah. That week, I returned to work, my teaching English to the troubled kids. While the situation has gotten better since the beginning, it is still often a completely disorganized mess. At this point, it is beyond ridiculous, but I have mostly given up on trying to fix it, since the program is only for another 6 weeks (GULP!!!!!!) However, I am working a lot more hours than I was in the beginning, and that is about the only improvement. ... read more

Shabbat as it should be: a day of rest! All of us still at the hotel happened to meet up at breakfast -- around 8:30-9:00 am. Great buffet breakfast, just wished I wasn't still stuffed from pasta at Steve's apartment last night. After breakfast met up with Tami's brother who lives near Ashdod. He drove into Tel Aviv with his wife and little boy -- who is just over a year old. So cute! We met in my room for about an hour talking Hebrew about family, his work, where he's lived, etc. What a nice guy. He's helping Tami (and us) with a mitzvah project of buying baby formula for the children in Sderot. I gave him the money and now he will arrange the purchase and delivery through someone in Sderot itself -- good ... read more

Shalom again! This is Debby today. I'm writing this a bit later, but covering all the happenings on Friday. We started with breakfast, of course, but today I skipped it. How much can one eat? (A lot.....) Then onto the bus at 8:30 (yes -- finally a day to get a bit more sleep...) We headed off first to see where Prime Minister Rabin was assassinated. For Americans reading this, it is an even more significant moment in Israeli history than the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963. Rabin was not only the head of the government, but he was just leaving a massive peace rally in favor of his policies of making peace with the Palestinians when a lone Jewish Israeli gunman shot and killed him. He still had the words of a peace song ... read more

David again. We left the Kibbutz at Kfar Blum this morning and as we looked up into the mountains of the Golan, we saw all the snow from after we came down yesterday. Rabbi Hachen actually heard that other groups that went up today got stuck in the snow. Except for a couple of days of rain, we have had some decent weather this trip but it has been chilly. Luckily, we packed correctly. Our first stop today was Caesarea, a port city with a lot of history of ruins. Herrod first built it but a lot of the ruins were left from the Crusades. The city was later taken by Moslems. What was amazing was Herrod's foresight for the need of a port city in the Roman empire and how he built it, putting the ... read more

Hello! This entry's theme is as noted in the title. I was at 3 different seminar/programs in one week, all of which happened to be in Israel, and the main seminar involved security, and spending so much time in Jerusalem gave me a sickness aka. a cold! hehe. So lets see, a week or two ago (I keep losing track), my group had a 3 day program in Jerusalem. We all went down on Thursday to see an Israeli movie. The movie was called "Someone to Run With". It is also a book by the same name, written by David Grossman. Grossman is a very famous Israeli author who writes both fiction, and about Israeli society, and is also a big political activist for the left in Israel. He actually spoke at the Yitzhak Rabin memorial ... read more

hello everyone!! I hope you al had a fabulous thanksgiving! As I mentioned in my short email last week, I just cooked a thanksgiving style dinner for me and one of my roommates. One of my french roommates to be exact. hehe. It was strange to be away for the holiday. I realized that I've been away from home for every other major holiday, both Jewish and American before, but never thanksgiving. So it was weird for me to be away from home and americans, hehe. As many americans as there are in Israel, most of my friends right now are not, so I didn't expect to have the same thanksgiving experience, even if I could cook the whole meal. But I got to tell my non-american friends about the holiday, and they certainly liked the ... read more

Hello All! Another lovely entry from my life in Tel Aviv. I continue to love this city. I always said that I never wanted to live near the beach, because the beach was like a paradise for me, and I didn't want it to lose that special feeling. And, I love living in the city, and I didn't want to give up the city life for the beach. I guess I never realized you can have both at the same time. Tel Aviv is this perfect combination, a big, vibrant city, on the beach. You don't have to go to far to reach the beach. And lucky for me, I live 5 minutes walking from the beach. It is truely amazing. I love having the best of both worlds! And, while I used to be afraid ... read more
