Today was spent mostly on our own until the tour started with an introductory dinner. It was a typical steamy day (in the high 80’s with a healthy amount of humidity). We started with the “Israeli Breakfast” buffet included with our hotel room. We had heard about the amazing breakfasts in Israel, but this was truly incredible: an huge array of fresh cheeses, breads, fruit, salads, cereal, eggs, pastries, fish, and a half dozen hot dishes (blintzes, crepes, quiche, etc…). Marisa, who loves breakfast, thought she was in heaven. We then headed to the beach for some fun. The clear blue water was absolutely perfect - warm, with gentle waves. We rented a couple boogie boards and had a blast riding the surf. The only disappointment was that we didn’t want to risk staying out in ... read more

Our flight to the Holy Land was uneventful. We arrived safe, excited, hungry and tired. Our hotel is right on the beach, our rooms looking out at the beautiful Mediterranean Sea. The weather is warm and the air smells like the sea. It is hard not to feel emotional about being in such a special place. Deb (Tom’s sister) arrived in the early evening. It was great to see her! We ended our first evening in Israel with dinner together by the sea, sampling typical Mediterranean food served by a very cute waiter….. From Deb (Tom's Sister): The flight went without a hitch. El Al reminds me of the good service provided by airlines from days gone by. It is v.exciting to be here….. especially being with Tom, Fran, Marisa, Josh. ... read more

Hope this publishes...the internet is giving me problems. I miss everyone, especially my prof, but I am having so much fun with Shaunie. Amsterdam was interesting for a day, but Israel is amazing. In Amsterdam I palled around with a guy I met on the train named Milton, he was very nice and it was fun to see all the acceptable weirdness of Amsterdam, it ain't Kansas. Landed in Tel Aviv at 2:30am, immediately going thru Customs, Shauna calls me...tells me to hurry, like I have any control with Israeli security and the process. The security guard in Passport Control asks me lots of questions, very abrupt...then she asks the nature of my visit. I start to cry, saying I am here to see my daughter. I explain how Shauna is here alone as a ... read more

Sundown, another Tisha B'av commemoration draws to a close. The streets of TA are alive again. Did laudry today and am making pasta, all for my Shaunie. Got an interesting response to my blog from someone named ahmed who wrote "nazis" to me. I hope my response to him gets posted. I mean, really come on now, how woefully pathetic is it that this guy goes thru travel blog search engines to impotently attack anyone having to do anything with Israel. What a waste of life, right? Meanwhile we are having such a great time together, Shauna and me. We rented some movies from blockbuster since today was not a beach day...you don't go swimming on Tisha B'av, and I always had a fear of drowning. I need a lifeguard---wait, I got one, right Aaron? ... read more

Hey all, sorry for the extreme delay in any posts. I've just been busy a lot in general. Obviously really busy since I'm writing this in Aug 7th. Anyway, this site crashed recently so most of my old stuff was lost. Sorry bout that. Enjoy what I give you though! There'll be lots more to come in future days, and some really great pics. July 4th, 2007, There's a place called Mike's Place in Tel Aviv that is basically a straight up American bar. It's filled with American tourists and everyone speaks English. I don't really like it there too much, but I went there celebrate my independence the best way possible...by getting really drunk. U.S.A.!!!!!! G-d bless America, Marcus Velelis... read more

July 1st, 2007 Today Adlai and I took a short trip down to Jaffa (Yafo). It’s an ancient Arab city at the very south of Tel Aviv. Read all about it here. Jaffa’s known for its cool sense of local Middle Eastern culture. It’s full of small shops, most of which sell antiques. I managed to get some cheap house wares while out there, and I had fun in the process. I also got a really amazing nargila (hookah) for an excellent price. It was a true Middle Eastern experience, with bargaining and everything. After that Adlai and I went to Shuk HaCarmel, which is a small Israeli market in the center of Tel Aviv, right across from the trendy Shenkin Street. If you’re from New York, think street fair in the Village. I got ... read more

June 30th, 2007 So I’ve been chilling out a lot and hitting up the beach. I’m starting to get one hell of a tan. My old roommate Jason is visiting from Jerusalem for the weekend. We’ve been going to the beach and last night we went out to a cool bar with a few friends. We all got kind of tipsy—my first time in Tel Aviv—but once again I didn’t really party to hard because we all just hung out as a group. I did go to a really cool party the other night though. It was “white night” here in Tel Aviv, which basically meant that everything stayed open really late, including museums and such. Basically it was just a reason for a party (siba l’misiba as we say in Hebrew). A couple of ... read more

June 26, 2007 So a lot has happened over the past few days, but to be honest I'm way too tired to write about it all. To start, Tel Aviv is in the midst of a heat wave, as is most of Israel. It's 100 degrees Fahrenheit and higher everyday. For those fans of the metric system, that's 38 degrees Celsius and up. It wouldn't be so bad if I could go to the beach everyday, but I started my job a couple of days ago. The hours really suck during my first week because I have to go through training. Basically, I’m at work from 8:30 AM until about 5:30 PM everyday. Today I worked until 6. It’s exhausting and I’m already sick of work in general. There’s a lot more responsibility than I expected, ... read more

On June 20 we departed for Israel on our long anticipated pilgrimage to the Holy Land. One of the precepts of the Bahá’í Faith is that each believer should try to make a pilgrimage to Bahá’í holy places at least once in their lifetime. Unlike the pilgrimages of other faiths, Bahá’ís must make a request for pilgrimage to the Universal House of Justice in Haifa. The UHJ is the nine-member body that governs the Faith internationally. Once you have made that request, you are placed on a waiting list, which usually takes about five to six years. This insures that the nine-day experience is maximized for the Bahá’í believers, who are given wonderful tours, with well-trained guides and have the opportunity to spend time with other Bahá’ís from all over the world who speak the same ... read more
