I was allowed a lie-in today, and after my kasha I went back to my room to download yesterday's pictures onto my laptop. I've turned a photo of my first Russian beer into my screen-saver. Tamara Aleksandrovna gave me a shopping list, and told me to go to the Universam supermarket downstairs to buy some fizzy drinks for dinner. The supermarket is part of a chain, and therefore feels surprisingly western, the only differences being that vodka has its' own aisle, and they play pop music. I found bottles of Dyushes, Baikal and Tarkhun, bought them from the checkout without too much fuss, and came back feeling very pleased with myself, to be told by my landlady that I was only supposed to choose one of them. All afternoon she knocked on my door every ten ... read more

Europe September 11th 2005

After York we made our way up to Hardrian's wall and stayed the night in the middle of nowhere on the border between Scotland and Britain. The drive up was over the moors and it was very cool. There is so much fog and its so hilly that its very haunting. I thought of all the books that include this particular part of England. The only ones I can think of at the moment are Jim Harrriet's books (we stopped and saw his house), the Secret Garden, Hounds of Baskerville and, biggest of all, Wuthering Heights. Hadrians wall was incredible. We didn't get there until sunset and we just parked out in a field and walked along it. The sunset was deep pink and to see the wall with no one around but cows was cool. ... read more

Here we are, we have started our trip and the first stop BERLIN!!. Very spectacular city with great architecture, history and so many museums that I am ... read more

Oh crikey. It's 2.30pm on the day before I'm due to fly and I'm not packed. I'm not even close to being packed. Instead of doing anything useful, I'm adding cds to the computer that's not coming with me in some vain hope that I can copy them onto a mega-holds-everything DVD-R and somehow transfer that onto my laptop. But as we all know, though that might work in theory, practice is something altogether different. And I'm not even sure it works in theory... So far today I've bawled my eyes out as I watched The Man (Simon) drive off into next year, eaten some of his birthday cake, eaten some dried mango, eaten a cheese sandwich (are you starting to see the pattern here?) and printed off some more photos. And here I am. Just ... read more

Wish we had a picture of this, but out of the 600+ we took, Buff didn't think it would be a good idea to take one of me being searched at airport security. I guess I haven't flown much since 9/11 and when the security guard looked me straight in the eye and said "you may be required to have additional search, if you do not remove your shoes and outer jacket" I thought he was just saying something they have to say. In retrospect, I wasn't thinking at all. I didn't make the machine alarm as I walked through, but next thing I know, I'm pulled aside, taking off my shoes & jacket waiting for a female to pat me down and sending my shoes and jacket back for their own little trip through the ... read more

Upon arriving in Olomouc, Brase and I were feeling the full effects of the lesson we learned in Cesky Krumlov - don't drink the tap water! We paid many a visit to the Olomouc McDonalds bathroom, and the long, bumpy bus ride to Olomouc was not a pleasant one. And we could not find a single pharmacy open on Sunday in the whole friggin town! So we did not really get to enjoy this quaint yet lively town. ... read more

So yes. I did come back. I was very tired, but then I was happy to see people. Plenty more for seeing yet, mind. Matters here are as they were, and I'm having no problems adjusting. I have not once said gracias by accident instead of thank you, though I did once mumble perdon now I think on it. I've been a working woman for a week. I now have a telephone number, praise the lord, which escapes me right now. I have not yet submitted my camera insurance claim, nor have I labelled all my CDs of photos (Just you wait, they're coming your way any time soon...). I'm still living out of a suitcase, plus lots of boxes which makes finding anything a lengthy process. As some sort of sick joke, someone has put ... read more

Szept. 13 este - 14 este: Madrid by night majd ugyanaz by daylight. Szept. 14 23:00 - 15 hajnali 03:30: A 12h-s repülõút Limába (l. térkép). A 6 óra idõpontkülönbség és 12h-s idõhossz ellentmondását a 8h-s idõeltolódás oldja fel. Szept. 15 : Busszal át Huarazba, ami amolyan bázis jelleget fog betölteni. Az út 6-8 órás. Szept. 15 este : Megérkezés a kispolgári módon már innen lefoglalt hostelbe. Szept. 16-18 : Körülnézés és akklimatizálódás Huarazban (3000 m felett fekszik a város). Remélem ekkor esem túl az "utazóbetegségen" (hasmenés) is. Szept. 19: Kényelmes eljutás az elsõ, rövid 4 napos túra elejére ... read more

...But now it's day 3 and I'm heading off on the Trans-Siberian Railway to Irkutsk in just a few hours. I'll be on the train for four days. I'm stupidly excited about this. I am a train geek, yes. But if there's a netcafe over there by Lake Baikal I'll be able to post about the great day we had yesterday in Moscow. Propaganda! War stories! The House of Tears! Lenin's waxen corpse! The Heroes of Communism! Havah Nagilah! And hopefully some pictures too... ... read more
