A mere matter of two and a half weeks ago we were arriving back in the UK after a year's worth of adventures abroad and yet here we are now, back on foreign shores and busy lapping up yet more history, culture and spectacular scenery. It´s good to be back! Our trip to the Black Forest in south-west Germany began with a very wet start to the day. We had intended to take the bus to Birmingham airport but it was chucking it down with rain and the prospect of gettng drenched on a 20-minute walk to the bus stop was far from appealing. Instead, we swallowed our financial pride and forked out a whopping £10 for a taxi that barely took 15 mintues to get there. To think that in South America we could ... read more

After the previous night's shananigans, I was in a shitty shitty mood the entire day. So I decided to go to the beach alone and avoid any human contact for fear of creating a situation... Fortunately the weather was in my favour and relaxing at the beach made everything better. My night ended up being spectacular. I ran into a guy who I had met the first night from South Africa who had just set up his own hostel, and his friend, who was an electrical engineer, was there visiting him. We talked about travelling, and nerdy EE stuff, and ended up getting VERY drunk. I had a bottle of red wine, a shot of Absinthe, a shot of caliente (vodka + tobasco), 2 cale muchos (red wine + coke), and probably something else too. The ... read more

Now I know it’s not really a frontier any more these days with the EU and all that and they didn’t even look at our passport as we crossed the border from Austria into Czech, although they do still have token customs officers. But what a difference from the places we have just been. We left Munich, followed the Isar river along a beautiful but bumpy car free road until we hit the Danube, followed this east over the German/Austrian border to Linz, then headed north into the Sumava mountains that border Austria and the Czech republic. As we crossed the border, we left perfectly manicured villages and fields, which for all their pristine beauty can be a bit soulless. Then very rapidly the slick surface of the Austrian road was replaced with a bumpy ... read more

just in case anyone was wondering, i'm still alive and well, just been a little busy the past few days, i'm in my fourth country and just got settled into florence for a few days, i'm staying with my best friend nicole in her flat, right in the center of the city. i've been living it up - laundry and silverware and electricity! but more on that in another blog. so i flew into amsterdam with my cousin last wednesday - the weather, which had cooperated so well in ireland, went on sabbatical - we had rain the entire time in the netherlands. amsterdam is a crazy city, bikes and people and bikes and trams and bikes and scooters and bikes - you get the idea. so getting to the campsite was a little touch and ... read more

INTERLAKEN: So sometime on the 13th lisa and i arrived in Interlaken, Switzerland....after over 12 hours on a train...we arrived at our hostel....in the pouring rain. The hostel we stayed at was called Funny Farm....and it was definitely a party hostel (as are most hostels in interlaken, considering it's an adventure town). So, we made our way to the bar behind the hostel, and it didn't take much considering we ate practically nothing that day. We then headed to the nightclub at our hostel, which had almost noone in it......instead, we went to the night club at funny farm's rival hostel...Balmer's. They were having a beach party, like they hold every wednesday night. Lisa and I were surprised at the prizes that they give away. The DJ kept announcing some prize about skydiving....i, being quite ... read more

Woke around 11 am to check out of our hostel and relaxed a bit before grabbing the train to Vienna. I decided that Budapest was one if not the favorite city I have visited so far. The city was incredibly beautiful with tons to see, gorgeous women walking everywhere, cheap everything, great nightlife, relatively few tourists, and very friendly people. I easily could have stayed in budapest for another week. We arrived in vienna after a short three hour train ride and fortunately our hostel was very near to the train station. We walked a bit and found the place called Wombats hostel which was quite a bit different from any of the previous ones we had stayed at. First off it was extremely large, seemed more like a hotel than a hostel. It also ... read more

The day was started out with the purchase of banana mango yogurt and musli which I'm beginning to really get used to and love. We then hopped on a ferry and went cruising across the ocean to Byg Doy, a peninsula with Norway's biggest museums. It wsa a beautiful out today--sun and bright blue sky and the water was gorgeous! We also saw a lighthouse in the water which I really liked because I've never seen one in real life before. Once we got there, weate our yogurt on the dock then headed for the Folk Museum. It's located in the middle of a residential area and I liked walking through there because the houses were enormous and had amazing architecture. I'm really interested in real estate so I was curious as to how much ... read more

Today our school planned a trip for us to the small towns of Siena and San Gimignano (S.G.). Both are very close to Florence and very accesible by bus, which we took. Siena is a picturesque Italian town (as shockingly most of them actually are) with rolling hills and extremely old buildings. Upon our arrival we got a brief tour of the city from one of the teachers and learned all about the Palio, which I mislabeled in a picture. It actually occurs on JULY 2nd this year, not June. A little side note about the Palio. My friend was lucky enough to go (I had two classes and couldnt skip both of them) and he told me all about it. Apparently, of the 17 or so neighborhoods in Siena, only 8 actually get to run ... read more

Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, London Eye We got up and went straight away to the Buckingham Palace to see the changing of the guards. There were way too many people to see anything. We found out that the reason there were so many people was because the Queen was in town to celebrate her birthday. Thanks for the invite, Liz! We walked around the other side to the park and we ended up getting an even better view of the guards leaving. Michelle and I found this war memorial dedicated to animals in war hilarious and Carissa thought we were mean. We went to the Tower of London and saw the crown jewels and diamonds. As we were walking around, Carissa saw this kid walk and she insisted that he was famous. We waited outside ... read more
