Blogging from May 3-10th, 2008 For my last week, I set out for the Scottish Highlands to join up with Trees For Life, a non-profit organization I’ve been fond of since the (no name) Art Group Candle Project 2004 (our environmental beneficiary). They are also the organization from whom I’ve purchased many little tree gifts from. Volunteering with TFL would be an opportunity to do something a little different, working with the earth instead of people. Gettin dirty and doing something out of my comfort zone keeps it all interesting. About Trees For Life: Trees for life is an award-winning Scottish charity working to restore the Caledonian Forest to 600 square miles of the Highlands west of Inverness. The distinctive Caledonian Forest community, dominated by Scots pine, is substantially depleted and fragmented. Only 1% of the ... read more

Hello Everyone....this wont be a very long entry but I wanted to update you all. I am about to run out of internet so just a quick note. Prague is very interesting. I went down to the pub in the hostel last night and met lots of people from all over the world! We played Apples to Apples which was very funny because there were only 2 Americans and the game is in English....native speakers kinda of understood more of what was going on. After drinking a couple of beers we all decided to head out and go to a club. A guy from Denmark has been here a couple of times and said he knew of a good club. This club plays 80s music...interesting right? It wasn't the better 80s songs it was the cheasy ... read more

It has been an eventful few days. We have walked up substantial hills, and then back down the other side of others. It has been rainy, sunny and overall just wonderful. But there have been moments when I realized that at least I had lost the focus of why I was here. Surrounded by friends, it is also easy to forget that we are on a pilgrimage. Up until now, the notion of pilgrimage has been of a much more technical nature. Heck, I have four different kinds of socks with me after receiving four different kinds of advice - 100% wool, for dryness, 70% wool and 30% technical fibers for a mix of benefits, technical socks of nothing but odd silver-studded material for wicking, and one pair that was a gift of unknown origin. The ... read more

The weather looked a bit rough, so we grabbed the car and drove 120km down to Pisa. Checked out the tower etc. (Decided it wasn’t worth - A$50!!!! - to go to the top), then had some Pizza, and browse of the market stalls, and drove back to Monterosso by mid afternoon. By this stage the weather was great in Monterosso, so we put on the bathers, got a ‘ticket’ for our hotels section of the beach, and settled in for a couple of hours on lounges on the beach. A walk around the shops of Monterosso, and then a fantastic dinner at a pretty fancy seafood restaurant on the beach pretty much finshed off our Cinque Terre visit perfectly. Got up this morning (Late-ish again!) had a browse through market stalls that had sprung up ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » London City May 24th 2008

So our time here has been wonderful. Such a warm and welcoming family that I am staying with, but pretty much everyone has a great home here! Today we were able to sleep in til 830! it was so nice! Frööshtuk was not until 9 because we didnt need to be at the church again until 10. We went into the city of Ulm. The main part of the day was to visit the Ulma Munster...which means the Ulm Church. It was HUGE! the largest cathedral in the world!...well tallest at least. We actually were part of there 1130 service so we were able to sing 3 songs and it was great. Then tehre was an organ concert that we could stay for, which we ended up doing so because it was such an amazingly huge ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris May 24th 2008

Okay, I woke up early (for me) today at 9am (aka 3am) and headed down for breakfast. I had my first taste of FANTASTIC Parisian coffee, and decided that I would go check out Montmartre today. ***** Wow, the Basillica Sacre-Couer was way overloaded with tourists. I made it to the front gates at the bottom of the hill and decided to look for another way up. After ducking out through a little path, I came across a walkway that wound it's way around the hill, and up to the top. I then found a windey set of stairs, and took those up. Much better. I only saw about 4 people from the bottom of the hill to the top. What a great view! It was a nice day, just a little hazy, and about 24 ... read more

Rain pounding down on the canvas - must be time for another blog ! Shook myself from a deep slumber to hear the promised rain lashing down so no need to rush around. As you can imagine the normal activities of the early morning human are relatively slow in a tent and even more so in the rain. Fortunately I had the foresight to bring swimming trunks and umbrella ! Breakfast was prepared inside the ten - which of course has large safety signs something to the effect of DO NOT COOK INSIDE TENT !!!!!! Seems to me the tent is unlikely to burst into flames in these conditions so with all sensible precautions breakfast was smoothly prepared and devoured - double helpings to lighten the gloom … I am camped for a few days on ... read more

Another early start to get out the door and catch the 9:11am train again to Cinque Terre, or more specifically, Riomaggiore. After breakfast and packing we had 40 mins to spare and turned out the lights for a cat nap. The train trip was agonisingly slow, especially because the seats were very uncomfortable and the train was at least 30 mins late by the time we reached our destination - it literally crawled the last 45 mins of the trip. We headed up to the office in the main via of Riomaggiore - a winding street on about a 40 degree incline - and got the keys to the apartment. Turned out to be almost directly across the street from the office. The stairs to the apartment - on the equivalent of perhaps the 4th floor ... read more
