Waiting... Just getting everything ready for our departure! The bags are packed, and waiting in the front hall, all our electronics are charged and packed, the lights are on timers, and now I'm waiting. I'll try to post at least every couple of days, but the goal is to post at least one picture and one short paragraph per day for our trip. The first leg of the trip is a 7.5h flight to Paris, France. We're going to hang out there for about 8 hours, then head back to the airport for the flight to Bangkok! Wish us nice weather! cheers, Paul... read more

Back in Peru! Currently in Arequipa, and going for dinner very soon, so I'll put in the highlights later! Lima - Missed briefing, but called Elard when we got to the hotel. Everyone at the airport was wearing masks. Same hotel, 3rd floor, very nice. Walked around and bought some cheese, crackers, chips, and vanilla yoghurt drink for dinner. Showed Marna the chess table I danced on. Pisco- turned out to be paracas, they've rebuilt quite a bit, and it's very nice and touristy now. Lots of dogs in the streets, nice beach with a view of the very colourful fishing boats. Dinner on the boardwalk. Cockfights across the street from the hotel. Didn't do the Ballestas Islands though. Ica - Sandboarding & dune buggies, did that, was very fun. Videos for all things, but tried ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca » Taquile Island June 15th 2008

Well, I'm finally updating this blog, after having been neglecting it for quite some time. Today is July 4th, so this entry is a good 3 weeks overdue! We woke up early for breakfast on the rooftop patio at the restaurant (coca tea was Definately in order after all those stairs!), and met downstairs in the lobby at 7:30am. We were met by our guide Marco, who would be with us the whole time out on Lake Titicaca. We all headed outside and hopped in our "Limousines" for the downhill trip to the harbour. Now, when I say Limousines, what I really mean is two-passenger tuk-tuks with a bicycle attached. We had a total of 8 Limos for our trip, and the race was pretty fierce, but Fran and I managed to come in second to ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Puno June 14th 2008

¡Hola! I am writing this without the benefits of my notes, so please forgive me if I have to add stuff later. Day 8 we got up and had breakfast at the hotel (in the place that I can't remember the actual name of) including some coca tea (once you get into the highlands, coca leaves are pretty much set at the tables in the hotels like salt and pepper). We hopped back on the bus with George and Erica, and headed back through Chivay, where we dropped Erica off. We travelled for about 5 hours, through the highlands. We watched two movies, and I slept the rest of the way to Puno. I did look out the window a few times, but it was pretty much the same as before, lots of hilly, rocky, barren ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Colca Canyon June 13th 2008

So we had a 5am wakeup call today, had breakfast at 5:30, and piled on the bus at 6am for a two hour drive to the condor del cruz... um.. somthing like that. I had forgotten to mention that our little "walk" yesterday had an elevation gain of 400m, and peaked at 4000m ASL. We hung out at the Condor place and saw a bunch, my photos were not great, but I will post some later. After the condor viewing, we hopped on the bus for another 15mins and took another 1h30 mins walk along the edge of the canyon. The views were spectacular, and the weather could not have been better for the trip, it was nice and sunny and warm. I do not have enough time now to do it justice, but we walked ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Chivay June 12th 2008

¡Hola! I am writing this in an internet cafe in Puno, the alt-gr key is broken, so I cannot use apostrophes at all. Or the "at" key. Grrr. I last left you waiting to go for dinner in Arequipa. We went to a really nice restaurant, which we were all very impressed with. I think the fixed menu was S/.27 and it was totally worth it. I had the Alpaca Carapaccio to start, followed by the stuffed chicken and steamed vegetables, with chocolate pancakes with ice cream for dessert. It was all fantastic, but the alpaca stood out as the best dish of the evening. Sometime during the evening we all decided that we could have spend another day in Arequipa, the city had grown on us over the course of the day there. We got ... read more

South America » Peru June 11th 2008

Hola! I´m in Arequipa, which travelblog doesn´t seem to want to recognize. I´m posting this one now while it´s still fresh in my mind, I´ll try to get day 5 posted asap. Last night we ate a late dinner at about 9pm in Nazca (a very nice dinner, I had baby goat. Yum!), because we were taking the night bus from Nazca to Arequipa. We had another two rounds of Pisco Sours, the restaurant had it´s own version that added blue Curacao...Mmmmm. It was a load of fun, I´d go back to that restaurant in a heartbeat. I think it was called Porton. I´ll ask Elard (our group guide) later. The night bus was a double-decker sleeper type bus that was quite comfy. We all sat up at the front of the bus on the top ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Nazca » Nazca Lines June 10th 2008

Hey all, sorry for being cut short yesterday, I turned around and my entire group was at the dinner table being served! I can´t remember where I left off, but I´ll try to hit the highlights again. Breakfast is being served, so I´ll keep it short. After the first morning, we drove to Pisco (details about the crazy bus rides later), and got to our hotel there (which was quite nice, and as it turns out, Ï´m gonna have a room to myself for the whole trip... I´m person #15. :-) Pisco had an earthquake last august/september, 2000 people died, including the entire congregation attending the church. Apparently the priest told them it was going to be okay and to stay inside. Then the roof collapsed. The destruction is pretty incredible, buildings are just gone. Our ... read more

South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Miraflores June 10th 2008

Okay, so this is my first internet access since I arrived in Peru, All is good! I don´t want to spend too much time on here, I´m on a free computer at the hotel, and there is a line of people waiting to use it. I´ll give you some highlights. Arrived in Lima after being delayed for an hour at the terminal on the plane while Canada customs loaded off the baggage of some guy who the pulled aside on the way through the loading gates. I´ve got some interesting stories from the taxi driver from the airport, but that will have to wait. The joining hotel for the tour is in the Miriflores district of Lima, a very touristy, but very save district. There are police of one form or another on virtually every street ... read more

Okay, I've posted all my videos from France, I apologize for the somewhat fuzzy quality but they were take with my phone! I highly recommend you check out the Hava Nagila video from day...4 I think. They are all pretty good, but that one is my favourite! I still have to upload the photos from my phone, I'll try to get to it tomorrow! Also... in case you wanted to take a better look at my photos, I've uploaded the whole lot to flickr in full resolution. Click here to go to the page. I've been back at work for a few days now, and it seems like I should still have a week until I leave for Peru, but it's actually less than 48 hours! *Panics!* I'm really excited about going, but I wish I ... read more
