Okay, so for those of you who know me really well, you know that I have this strange fascination with public transit systems. Of all the places I've visited so far, Paris has the best urban transit system by far! The Metro is fantastic! This will be a pretty geeky post, so feel free to skip it! So the Metro system consists of fourteen major lines, and two "bis" lines (I think it's 3b, and 8b). Each line generally runs in a fairly straight line overall, but they criss-cross with the other lines, so they whole system looks like a big spiderweb. There are three major types of trains, all of them run on tires (like you'd see on a bus), with rails to guide them. Type one trains are painted green and white. They pretty ... read more

Okay, so it was my last full day in Paris, I slept in until 11am, after turning off my alarm at 9am. I figured I wasn't going to make breakfast before it closed at 10am anyway. I was pretty tired today, Yesterday was so busy! I left the hotel around noon, and wandered down towards the corner patisserie for a baguette breakfast. There was a protest going on in Berczy square, something about public services, so I ate my food on the steps of the Palais Omnisports. In addition to the baguette, I got this strawberry cake-type thing... well, it was good. really good. I tried to take a picture of it, but it just disappeared too fast, I don't know what happened, I swear! There were these slices of real strawberries in it, but when ... read more

Bonjour! I must again apologize for this late update, I looked for this internet cafe for TWO HOURS on Wednesday, with no luck. But I'm here now. I woke up late again, sometime around 11h. I managed to haul myself to Notre Dame for noon, and didn't encounter any protests this time! The line here is the longest I've seen yet in Paris, it was about 40 people long. I hunkered down for a long wait on a bright sunny day (at least it was outside!), and updated my journal and planned the rest of my day. About 10 mins into the wait, a guy shows up with a rubber monster mask and starts entertaining the crowd by sneaking up on people and pretending to be their husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend. Watching their faces when they turned around to ... read more

Alrighty, after this one, I'll be fully up to date! It's been raining all day today, so I decided to visit le musee des invalides. The building have had various uses over the years, but now it's been turned mainly into a war museum, one of the largest in the world. It also holds the tomb of Napoelon...y'know the insecure, short guy? First off is the part of the museum dedicated to the middle-ages through the 18th century, and the weapons and armor of those periods. I have never seen so many intricately decorated suits of armor, halbards, crossbows, and matchlock pistols in my life. Of particular interest were a couple of triple barrelled pistols (really impractical looking), some helmets shaped like funny faces, and some royal armor. Mmm... armor. They even had full suits of ... read more

Day 5. Monday May 26th. I was pretty exhausted after my adventures on Sunday, so today was a bit of a day of rest for me. I decided to try and visit the Crypts today, so I headed out to find Les Catacombes. Turns out the are closed on Lundi, so I went to the Tour Mount-Parnasse. I didn't actually end up going up the tower, just wandered around a bit. I then headed to St.Germaine for a snack (which turned out to be a 4 Euro 30 coke at a cafe, 'cause it was pouring rain. I decided that today was not the day to be out trying to do anything too exciting, so I wandered around Bercy Village (where I'm staying) and found a convienience store. I bought a couple of bottles of wine, ... read more

Bonsoir! I have found a 24/24h internet cafe (they use the 24-hour clock around here, hence the 24/24h...), and have had dinner, et le petite cafe... je ne dormier pas pour plus de 8 heures! (excuse my bad french, just be glad you don't have to hear me use it! D'accord, day 4, the 25th of Mai! I woke up around 10am, and went down for a late breakfast. I had a shower and decided to wander around the Quartier Latin. I wandered around for a few hours, the left bank is definitely much cooler than le rive droit! Most of the bookstores (librairies) were closed, as it was Sunday, but it seems that there is some kind of big art fair happening starting on the 28th. I'll be there for sure! I finally decided I ... read more

Okay, I woke up early (for me) today at 9am (aka 3am) and headed down for breakfast. I had my first taste of FANTASTIC Parisian coffee, and decided that I would go check out Montmartre today. ***** Wow, the Basillica Sacre-Couer was way overloaded with tourists. I made it to the front gates at the bottom of the hill and decided to look for another way up. After ducking out through a little path, I came across a walkway that wound it's way around the hill, and up to the top. I then found a windey set of stairs, and took those up. Much better. I only saw about 4 people from the bottom of the hill to the top. What a great view! It was a nice day, just a little hazy, and about 24 ... read more

First off, I'd like to apologize for taking so long to post an entry! It was my intention to post at least one per day, but... well, I'll explain later. So thanks for being patient, and I'm planning on doing one-a-day until I'm back! Whew! Okay, so on the first day of my trip (actually just the flight part), I went to see the new Indiana Jones movie with my friend Laura. It was fantastic, I'm really glad I went to see it, and was even more excited when they went to PERU! Nazca AND Cusco... I can't wait! We caught the 1pm show, my flight wasn't until 9:25pm, so I figured I should have plenty of time to get to the airport after the show. Looking back, I'm glad I planned for the worst ... read more

Okay, so first off, sorry for the lack of updates since I left. My computer's battery is crappy, and it took me until now to buy an AC adaptor for use in Europe. And now my wireless card isn't working, so it let me log on for a total of 20 seconds, then booted me off again. I've now found an internet cafe, so things are looking much better for updates. I'll start from the top. Day 1 I've already written another entry for this day, it's on my laptop, I'll post it when I can. Basically, I got into Paris and got settled.... read more
