Today we got up again and were fed a pretty boring meal. It seems like breakfast is going to be horrible here, so it’s a good thing that I’m feeding myself. At least today we had some porridge or oatmeal which wasn’t too bad. However, if you are one of those people that don’t like breakfast, you’d probably do just fine in England because the fare is pretty bad. After breakfast I headed over to try and get on the internet. I got there a quarter till when it would open and waited in a huge queue until half past when it was to have been opened because nobody was there to give us the login codes. One guy hacked into it and checked his email then left. He refused to tell anyone around him how ... read more

arrived in England on the 22nd sept from New York...so jet lagged! Got picked up from Heathrow by Nikki (thanks!!) Went and checked out Windsor castle, hoping that we might run into the queen and get invited up for tea and scones...unfortunately for us it didnt happen (apparently she was at buckingham palace) but we did get a few tips on how to pick up Prince William! Checked out Buckingham Palace, the Big Ben and Leciester Square, with tour guide Russ...got a few ideas on how to jump the wall of the palace and go visit the queen, but decided against it, for the time being.... Went wondering by myself another day and tried to find the London Bridge (or is it the London tower? i cant remember...) but never did find it...I still dont know ... read more

I feel like I'm just living in London now, but I guess I *am* still a visitor, so I should probably tell everyone at home what goes on here. I've just spent some days shepherding Ange around the city, and have decided I could never be a tour guide. Tourists ask too many bloody questions. I had my standard defence worked out pretty quickly though; every time she asked what some building was, and I didn't know, I just said they were offices. Her trust in me may now be less than absolute. We had a good time though, and I'm a bit envious of her seeing London for the first time. I remembeer what that was like, and it would be nice not to be jaded about it again. I do still love it though, ... read more

I told Jim I'd set up this blog, and he looked at me like I was mental. Apparently spending ten minutes in an internet cafe every few days is a serious waste of time. This from the man who searches all the souvenir shops for 'the best' fridge magnet, everywhere he goes. We had a new flatmate move in last night. He's been to some of the places we'll be going to soon, so I intend to freak him out with a million questions before we leave. Meeting HG later to discuss our London Film Festival options. This is a serious business, and may require more than one gin & tonic. So far I haven't seen anything in the programme to rival Napoleon Dynamite, but you just never know. Out with Roke tomorrow night I think. ... read more

I was never one to believe in conspiracy theories, though the events of the last few days have led me to believe that a massive, world wide conspiracy to screw Mitch and I is definitely in the works; being overcharged at cafe's, being given sketchy directions many many times, getting lost in London and Leeds more often than being found. These things might be the result of poor quality maps, bad navigational skills, poor planning and my assumption that everyone I talk to will be a nice person. However, now I realize that in cities this size if one is to survive, a certain killer instinct must be adopted... Our hostel in London was filled with drunk Australians, and so after a chill out night of sleep and jet lag, and a day in London checking ... read more

Today they fed us breakfast which wasn’t the greatest, especially since no fruit was available. We then did a whole lot. First we took a very incomplete and hard to understand/hear tour of Nottingham University Campus. It was somewhat informative if you were able to hear what the tour guides were saying. Then since we were on our own for lunch, a group of us (4 Americans, 2 Aussies, 1 Venezuelan and a Mexican) headed to the bus stop to catch a ride into the city centre. We then split up a bit and ate lunch, explored the city a bit, the shopping center called Broadmarsh, and checked out phones. I have to get a new phone it looks like because mine is not compatible with SIM cards. Then as we wandered back towards the bus ... read more

Hi Folks, Having talked to Australian friends here in the U.K, apart from the obvious, Sunshine and great beaches!! & the kookaburra chorus in the morning, there are an amazing array of food stuff's that they really miss about home while here in the U.K, here are just some of them, the list is endless: Twisties (cheese only), Cheezels, Burger Rings, Cherry Ripe, Tim Tams, Nutri-Grain (crunchy cricket bats), Pavlova with passionfruit pulp, French onion dip (made the Aussie way), Aussie bacon, Large beef sausages (not the piddling sausages we have) and T bone steak on the barbie, Samboy chips, Aeroplane Jelly, SAO bicuits, Iced Vo-Vo's, mangoes (the Bowen variety) , watermelon, pineapples (apparently they have huge ones!!) whiting fillets in beer batter, etc! etc! I have been asked to try all of these things when ... read more

Well, I figured, after being incommunicado from most of my dearest, if not nearest for the last long while, I should start to let people know what's going on. So, 10 and a bit weeks to go. Have been jumping between being really excited about going to Asia, and of course, going home, and feeling like I'm leaving something behind in London. Most days lately I've had London up to the back teeth. I'm so sick of people treating each other with something bordering on contempt. I find that really hard to take. A transport system that appears to run on the smell of an oily rag isn't too easy to get on with either, but then something always happens to make me fall in love with it again. Besides which, I've got some friends here ... read more

Today some fellow students and I ventured to Camden Town, which has the best vintage shops I've seen so far, and to Hampsted Heath. Hampsted Heath is an enormous heath that has a hill called Parliment Hill which was told to me to be the highest point in London. Hampsted Heath also had the largest desk and chair I've ever seen (kind of odd location), I will insert some pictures to explain. Tomorrow some different people and I are going to visit the changing of the guard and back to Camden so that I can actually look around and do some shopping (light shopping, don't worry dad). I miss you all and hope that you are well! Love, Jen... read more

This morning Taylor and I took Hotelink to Heathrow Airport in order to catch our coach pick-up to Nottingham University. Our ride with Hotelink was full of adventure—a crazy, speeding driver who got into an argument with a truck (lorry) driver on a small street. We couldn’t get through because of road work or something and because this huge truck was in the way, etc, etc. So….our driver got out and had a look about and proceeded to have a “discussion” with the driver of the truck. We eventually were on our way again and arrived safely at the airport. On the way to the airport I noticed a really cool pub (which apparently is a chain) called The Slug and Lettuce…it reminded me of Santa Cruz’s mascot, the Banana Slug. Once at the airport we ... read more
