Well, I figured, after being incommunicado from most of my dearest, if not nearest for the last long while, I should start to let people know what's going on. So, 10 and a bit weeks to go. Have been jumping between being really excited about going to Asia, and of course, going home, and feeling like I'm leaving something behind in London. Most days lately I've had London up to the back teeth. I'm so sick of people treating each other with something bordering on contempt. I find that really hard to take. A transport system that appears to run on the smell of an oily rag isn't too easy to get on with either, but then something always happens to make me fall in love with it again. Besides which, I've got some friends here ... read more

Today some fellow students and I ventured to Camden Town, which has the best vintage shops I've seen so far, and to Hampsted Heath. Hampsted Heath is an enormous heath that has a hill called Parliment Hill which was told to me to be the highest point in London. Hampsted Heath also had the largest desk and chair I've ever seen (kind of odd location), I will insert some pictures to explain. Tomorrow some different people and I are going to visit the changing of the guard and back to Camden so that I can actually look around and do some shopping (light shopping, don't worry dad). I miss you all and hope that you are well! Love, Jen... read more

This morning Taylor and I took Hotelink to Heathrow Airport in order to catch our coach pick-up to Nottingham University. Our ride with Hotelink was full of adventure—a crazy, speeding driver who got into an argument with a truck (lorry) driver on a small street. We couldn’t get through because of road work or something and because this huge truck was in the way, etc, etc. So….our driver got out and had a look about and proceeded to have a “discussion” with the driver of the truck. We eventually were on our way again and arrived safely at the airport. On the way to the airport I noticed a really cool pub (which apparently is a chain) called The Slug and Lettuce…it reminded me of Santa Cruz’s mascot, the Banana Slug. Once at the airport we ... read more

Well here I am less than 48 hours from departure and despite my best efforts to be ruthless and travel light (a new concept to me) I still can't fit everything in my bag. I'm sure this will come as no surprise to anyone that even vaguely knows me! The problem is, I need all this practical stuff like sleeping bag, water purification kit and sleep mat, so there is no room for my hair straighteners! Whose idea was it to go camping?! Well I'm feeling a bit nervous now and sad to be saying goodbye to my family who have been fantastic, putting me up (and putting up with me) since I came back from doing a ski season in France earlier this year. But, there's no going back now and I am excited about ... read more

I had my first "official" class today. I put "official" into quotation marks because I am still not quite sure if I attended a class, a conversation, and informational meeting, or a two hour discussion on inflation. My first foray into Graduate life could be described as any of those things. I shall take this opportunity to explain the University of Edinburgh's own unique and different approach to Graduate life. I have been pretty frustrated with the overall lack of contact I have had with people from the University over the past several months -- so much so that the very fact that I knew where to be to make it possible to attend my first class was something of a miracle in and of itself. From numerous paperwork problems to a complete and total lack ... read more

So everything is getting much better here. I have made friends with some fellow British people and I am venturing away from the American people, which is great! Depending on how important my orientations are this week (classes don't start until next week) I may go to Rome with two other Purdue girls for a couple of days but it all depends. I have one today and I'll find out how vital it is. My new English friends took me to my first Traditional Sunday Roast and the food was actually pretty good but then again I had been at the pub all day. I would love to write more but I need to get going. Love to everyone!!! P.S Danielle, I have only seen Heinz ketchup so far, but again I haven't ventured into the ... read more

The next morning we dropped Greg off at the airport and said goodbye to Grandpa and Ug. It was so strange to see them after almost a year and then to let them go again. But I was still with my mom and I knew I still had quite an adventure yet to experience. Mom and I left the car (now THAT I will miss terribly) and dragged out luggage onto the tube to get to South Kensington where our hotel was located. Once we got there we were starving so we ordered tea where I picked up my first case of travelers' food poisoning from an egg sandwhich. Much later that afternoon I ventured out with Mom to see some of London since it was our only day there. London is beautiful! I want to ... read more

Today Taylor and I took a walking tour around the Westminster-Trafalgar Sq area. We started off to Buckingham Palace through Green Park to watch the changing of the guard at 11:30am. However, in September the changing is every other day according to the brochure. Ok, so we get there and it’s apparently every EVEN day…which means its tomorrow. Big bummer! So after that hit we went and visited St. James’s Park which is gorgeous and fun to walk around. We then saw the Horse Guards Parade or ceremony (I think). We then walked over past the Cabinet War Rooms to 10 Downing Street which is really hard to see because they have all these gates and police there as security guards. We skipped over the Banqueting Hall because it’s not something special, (at least to me) ... read more
