Feb. 2 So I talked to my Spanish teacher today about me changing out of the class but he seems quite sure that I need to stay with him…….he says I’m not doing near as badly as I think I am - which is good news. I was telling him how I get frustrated with the class a lot b/c I always think I’m making mistakes but he told me not to worry b/c simply trying is a big part of my grade. Anyway, something happened today for the first time on my trip to England…..I was bored. Scary --- I know, but seriously…I was. Whitney left for Paris; Monica and Paul went shopping at Asda (which is easily a 3-4 hr. task); Brian left for Amsterdam; then Lee, Alison, and Matt went to dinner but ... read more

Teething problems over and we're finally logged in and ready to start our Blog. Forty Six days to go! Just incase we need to remind ourselves how long left at any point, its this long: So, we are really going to do this - tickets booked and on their way, backpacks being looked at, shoes being researched and accomodation being booked. Albeit slowly. It all seems a little rushed to be planning so much with so little time to get it all arranged but both of us agree that is probably a good thing. I certainly cant imagine how people planned trips before the internet arrived. I guess we are lucky to have that advantage both for the pre-trip research, and the opportunity to log our feelings, thoughts and experiences as we move from place to ... read more

We're gradually getting ourselves prepared for the trip now, starting to pack up the house and finally considering our itinerary in a bit more detail. This Wednesday we went for our first visit to the travel clinic to plan our vaccination programme. We were amazed at how many injections we will need to safely take our trip around the world so we're now preparng ourselves to become human pin cushions. The funniest part of our consultation was the fact the the computer system that's used to work out which jabs we'll need couldn't fit all of our destinations in! We started with a nice bit of rabies and some japanese encephalitis and we're due back next week for another dose. Thankfully neither of us is scared of needles but I had to tell the nurse lady ... read more

So, I have left my job at the MDA (as of yesterday) and although I am sad to leave all the great people I worked with, I am so very excited!! My flights are booked and the plane I'm catching leaves heathrow on 20th February for Hong Kong. I'll be staying in Hong Kong for 4 days then flying to Sydney, landing on the 25th. I'm gonna be staying in Australia for about a year, hopefully. I plan to work in Sydney for about 3 months then travel up the east coast with Oz Experience finishing at Cairns over about a 2 month period. The plan from then gets a little blurry and there will be a large amount of 'winging it', but hey that's all part of the fun!!! All I know is I will ... read more

Home stay weekend is a big part of the Butler "experience" here in the UK and Ireland according to Ruth, Cathy, and Katherine, the three women who run my program who are kinda like everyone's young chic mothers. As I mentioned before I got my assignment the second or third day I was here and my family seemed like they would be the exact opposite of everything I had written down on my description sheet. I realize I don't know exactly what I wrote down on that fateful day back at UConn sometime last fall but I never said anything about being religious or liking children, two major aspects of my English family's life. As the day came closer (last Friday) I got more nervous but felt reassured as everyone else in my program was basically ... read more

Feb. 1 So today I have been in England for a month. I can’t even believe it……I really feel like I’ve been here for ages already but when I look back at it I realize that its just been a few weeks…..4 to be exact. I actually got a little homesick today --- not b/c of the month thing but it is an odd coincidence. Actually it was talking to mom (sorry if it makes you feel bad- I love you)……she was just telling me all about seeing TC at the Fox and how he did so well and she was also telling me about OYP doing Millie. I really was happy to hear that everything was going so well…..I just couldn’t help but feeling like I was missing out on a lot of things. It ... read more

Oh... The weight of my backpack, or is it my 'independent travellers daysack'! And... I haven't even set off on my travels yet, but I've had sights and tastes from all around the world at 'Destinations' aka 'The Times Travel Show'! The day started with an early alarm clock... I'm not used to those any more (I AM talking pre-7am, not 9am early)! A drive to Diss.. Not the largest of stations but very friendly staff... Including the small café/shop from which the most enticing aroma of bacon butties was emanating... I resisted and ate my banana sandwich (I’d known I wasn't going to get up early enough to eat cereal.. There's no point pretending!). Onto the train (on time!) with plans to relax with my latest (probably not THE latest Marian Keyes) but I got ... read more

Had my 1st Contact Meeting, where they talked about bank accounts and other things, took about 3hrs so pretty comprehensive. Other news is that I went job hunting in West End on Tuesday and handed about 15 CVs out. Should get a job soon. I went into a place called the Lab on Tuesday and met Sarah, an Aussie manager who's been here 4 years. Although she didnt have a job available, i had a great chat about other bars in the area, as they all seem to know each other. So i gave her my CV and thought nothing of it. She texted back that night saying happy b'day, which i didnt tell her, and to come there thurday about 6. She gave me a £10 bday drink! and then took me to Ronnie Scotts ... read more
