Hello Again. I've just had an amazing weekend in Wales with my flatmates. We stayed in Conwy, in Northern Wales. It was so beautiful and serene there. Very idyllic. We were there from the 26th to the 28th of Oct. We arrived around eight on the 26th so we didn't see much of the town, but we did search for food, and found the Archway, a cheap yet good take-away shop. The welsh beef actually tastes like beef. I was impressed. Our hostel was at the top of a very steep incline. It was a workout trying to walk up that after wandering around half-starved looking for food. We were up bright and early on the 27th and we met our wonderful guide, Llewelyn. He was very knowledgeable. He gave us history of the town, ... read more

Unfortunately, no other country in the world seems to celebrate Halloween like the United States does, and none of the other Americans seem to celebrate Halloween as much as I do...this, however, did not stop me from wearing my purple wig and a neon blue striped jumpsuit to the AC Halloween party Friday night and an outfit painstakingly created entirely out of tinfoil to the AC Game Show on Saturday (our house's theme was Space Age - there was a REASON for the tinfoil, really). Luckily I had the presence of mind to have double layers of tinfoil, as the skirt bit ripped while I helped lead Morgannwg to win the dance portion of the show; someone's put a video on YouTube of me dancing with Simon under the caption 'crazy - you won't BELIEVE this'. ... read more

On Sunday we got an extra hour of sleep thanks to Daylight Savings time! We ate another carb-filled breakfast in hopes that we would be climbing Mount Snowdon or Yr Wyddfa as it is called in Welsh. If the clouds were going to be low and obscuring the view, or the path, there really was no point in climbing. In that case we were going to visit Penrhyn Castle. 7 of us really wanted to climb the mountain - the highest point in Wales. I was really interested because Yr Wyddfa plays into many of the King Arthur legends or at least serves as a backdrop for the stories. Storm wasn't sure if we were going to climb or not. It had rained almost all night and the clouds were low. When we got out there, ... read more

On Friday night after I was done with class, Bob the coach driver once again joined us as we began our trip to Conwy in Northern Wales. We stopped on the way at a service station which are kind of like our rest areas but with stores and restaurants. It was not what I was expecting for a service station. When we arrived in Conwy, we found the hostel, grabbed some dinner from a cheap fish and chip shop and then went back up to the hostel and to bed. One thing that we noticed right away was that the signs were in both English and Welsh - which was cool. On Saturday we were up bright and early for a breakfast full of carbohydrates. At 9, Llewelyn Groom came to speak to us about the ... read more

The sky was bright blue. The sun was out. Our spirits were high. But then the pilot started the descent and the BMI Baby plane shuddered before breaking free of the thick, dark clouds. So much for 'the hottest British summer yet'. Touchdown! We were back in Wales. Being the ultimate 'cheapies', we just simply couldn't resist being lured back by the promise of cheaper flights to exotic locations. Vibert rode upfront with Tyrone and Shanna climbed into the backseat with Ebony and re-started the same endless chatter from a month ago. Building upon our experience in Crete, we decided to get us a rental. 1-Car-1 in Tremorfa had a car for us and (what do you know?) it was the same color, make and model as IEK-2400 (see Crete: Nomads in a strange land) except ... read more

Just because I haven't written for a week dos not necessarily mean I have dropped off the face of the earth; this time, it means I've been to Oxford, London, Llantwit Major, and (today, for the CAVRA exercise) Rhoose Point, where I had to carry an extremely out-of-shape fifty-year-old man up a hill on a stretcher whilst he pretended to be unconscious. The long weekend - which started exactly one week ago and which on the whole required significantly less effort than dragging the fat man 200 yards - was amazing, mainly because my roommate has houses in both Oxford and Oxford Circus in London. I can't really say 'the heart of London', as I discovered that London is sort of mind-bogglingly huge and could not possibly be fully explored in the 24 hours that we ... read more

Oi! What a gorgeous weekend! Away from the city and into some breathing space! We could not have asked for better weather as if we had custom ordered it. I am speechless. It has taken us this long to get our tongues back and get this thing written after being surrounded by such natural beauty. Even our bed-and-breakfast style hotel, Ty Gwyn ("The White House"), was wonderful--soft cushy bed in a large room (even en suite), and delicious food served in a cozy dining room. And homemade vanilla bean ice cream (I know hand-churned when I taste it!) Our only regret was that we did not stay longer in Betws-y-Coed. Getting to Betws-y-Coed (pronounced Bettus-e-Coy), near Snowdonia, was a different matter: only part of the train pulled into the Reading station, and we had to wait ... read more

The months of September and October saw the Rugby World Cup being hosted in France (with some help from Wales and Scotland - who co-bid with France to stop England getting the hosting gig). Of course, I had to get a piece of the action! Way back in November last year I purchased tickets to the Australia v Wales game in Cardiff and quarter-finals for the winner of Australia's pool (a leap of faith at the time, because the Wallabies were not performing that well!!) Finally, September 15 rolled around, and a group of 16 Aussie mates (among many, many other Aussies) headed to Cardiff. We came by car, bus, train and plane (three people came over from Sydney... ) all ultimately converging on a (very crowded) pub in town for a pre-game beverage. We then ... read more

I got a letter from my Dad and Marilyn yesterday, and his note at the end saying "We're assuming no news is good news" reminded me that I hadn't written in a while. See Dad? You really do have an influence on me. It's been terribly rainy and foggy lately. The winter rains have started and I woke up one morning about 3 days ago to a very thick fog (depicted in the picked picture). I had a terrible cold for about a week, with no voice for about 5 days of it. You almost forget what you sound like after that long. I was the last one of my flat to get sick so hopefully that will get rid of the illness around here for a while. I fell a bit behind on my coursework ... read more
