Sunday 30 December 2007 - 5.45am! The alarm goes off, alerting us that it is time to rise and shine for our fundraising training hike into the mountains, in the Brecon Beacons National Park. Setting the alarm for 5.45am appeared to be a great idea the night before, but now seemed ridiculously early as we slowly awoke bleary eyed, and noted that it was still pitch black outside and very very cold! We embarked on a family training hike today with Steve's dad, Oliver and Steve's brother Malcolm, and drove from Gloucestershire into Wales to reach the start of the hike. Despite being so early in the morning it was glorious to see nature bursting into life and sunrise was beautiful. On reaching the starting point for the 'Brecon Beacons Horseshoe' hike, we had an initial ... read more

Seasons Greetings Although rather ominous the title of this blog best represents what is going on at the moment, as this is our first winter in the UK we were a bit unprepared for the lack of sunlight and the daylight hours only lasting from 8:30am till 4pm. This sort of weather definately has an effect on peoples mood and you can see it on days when it is sunny that people are happier. The change of seasons over here is also very dramatic with all the trees losing there leaves leaving just branches. in places like the park it gives the place a spooky feeling. We are still working and saving although we are heading to Ireland and Italy on the 15th of january and it looks like we will be travelling again in April, ... read more

Getting Ready Just finalising the details before we head off on Boxing Day. I know that no matter how much we say we are going to be ready, the morning of Boxing Day is going to be frantic. Not to worry, 5 hours in the low-stimulus environment of a National Express coach will calm us down! One of the last things left to do is to get four different kinds of dollar - HK, Aus, NZ and US - and then I think (although Cath hates it when I say this!) we are all set. Haven't really had that much time to think about the whole thing yet. Had an exciting day last week when we were buying new walking shoes and an enormous suitcase and so on. In a way it will be fun to ... read more

My term is over here and though I know, everyone knows, that it's a short time, I didn't realize it was going to be TOO short. My room has the lived-in, disgruntled look of an undignified student room and I'm fairly certain that it is not what I will miss. I will not miss the inevitable smell of garbage in the kitchen or the almost complete lack of security from 10PM-8AM around the flats (unless security is called with a specific complaint of noise or other shenanigans (-- I spelt that right the first time! I'M amazed...)). People tell me there are much better cities than Swansea to be in, more exciting, more going on, just ...more. I think sometimes that it wouldn't have mattered where I'd gone for my exchange. I know that I'd've had ... read more

Dear Boys and Girls, Camille and I took a trip down to the country of Wales. In order to get there we drove through the country of England. We stayed in a town on the coast called Llandudno. It was very pretty. You could walk along the water for quite awhile. We hiked up a mountain in the rain and there were sheep all around us! While we were there we also visited a castle called Caernafon. No one lives in the castle anymore because all that remains of it are the walls and towers, but it is still beautiful. We found out that this castle is where Prince Charles of Wales had his coronation. Camille also got the chance to dance to some bag pipers. She loves them! On the way home from Wales we ... read more

I left the UK on the 10th December 2007, a day that can be marked in may ways, not limited to...: 3 days after I finished work at EDS, 5 days after both my birthday and my arrival back from Berlin 12 days after what was to be my father's final birthday The very day the rural delivery catastrophe struck CourierPost (the result of which was the need for a temp to man the admin for it in Auckland...and there was my job) 2 months since I left my flat to move in with Mum, Sian & Co to save money before the trip 8 days after the start of a beautiful relationship On a more mundane level, it marked the day our flight was to leave from Manchester bound for Sydney via Singapore. Since I last wrote, I have acquired an accordion, the lead role in the annual AC musical, and probably a score of 1 on my Spanish exam. I sang my body parts vocabulary to the tune of Deck The Halls for DAYS, when on the test we had to translate a random 5-page interview with Penelope Cruz (who was not ever asked questions like "Do you like your elbows?" or "What do you think is the most important issue facing toenails today?"). My Physics exam was equally grueling today, which - and I'm really looking on the bright side here, as I only discovered the entire last PAGE of the Physics exam when we had ten minutes left - made the Maths exam afterwards seem like ponies and sunshine and rainbows. You can always tell how ... read more
