So, the first batch of pictures on this entry are from last Sunday (sorry for the delay!). First we took a walk through the mountains - mere hills for those of you who've hiked in the Rockies, but still quite beautiful. We stopped at two lakes which had very long Welsh names that I don't remember and basically just goofed around for awhile. I'm actually surprised we stayed there as long as we did because it was quite chilly and very windy. Then we visited another castle! Dolwyddelan Castle was quite different from the huge Norman castle we visited last week. Dolwyddelan was built by Welshmen who were slighty more modest in their architecture. Unfortunately, the castle has not been taken care of in the last few centuries and now sits mostly in ruins. Actually, it ... read more

First of the month, just after pay day, so off to Wales with Ange (flatmate), Dan and Fran (her mates/cousin) to spend it. Hired a car for the weekend and took off Friday evening for the 3 1/2 hr drive to Cardiff, Wales arriving late in the night. Up early the next morning for a look around the city and werent disappointed in the sights. Had a look at the stadium and the Cardiff castle with its own stone circle and around the main shopping street. Weather was grey and miserable so didnt stay long and packed up the car and headed along the southern coast line stopping for lunch at Port Talbot then onwards to Swansea area. Headed out for a brisk walk past an old castle and out to the coast near the Three ... read more

In real life, living impetuously without any planning or forethought whatsoever is generally considered a bad idea. But must I remind you again that this is not real life? I wouldn't exactly call my state of existence for the past two weeks 'careless', just 'carefree'. I have these moments of complete euphoria when I'm walking home from AC Musical practice and look back at the castle against the plum-coloured smogless night sky, or when I'm running along the cliffs during morning assembly (they always send us the agenda for assemblies by email anyway, and hearing Nick Lush lecture us once again on how sneaking into the castle after 10:15 is not allowed vs. running for a good hour along the cliffs at sunrise has never really been a dilemma for me) and the sun rises over ... read more

Crazy Tim and his mate Dangerous Dave have recently moved over from NZ. Tim went to Uni with my flatmates Lisa and Andre. Anyway Tim has a car and decided it was high time for a boys trip. So on Friday after work Andre, Tim, Dave and I started off for Cardiff. We had a couple of trays of beers, some tunes and plenty of excitement. Two and a half hours later after talk of cars, rugby and other bloke things we were in Cardiff. We biffed our bags in our rooms, put on our man rags (glad rags sounds to lame) and strolled into town. By this stage we were ravenous. Andre and I thought it would be a good idea to order a 10 piece meal from KFC. We then thought it would be ... read more

Today we had our first field trip for the required class I'm taking, Introduction to Welsh Culture. First, we took a bus just 8 miles from Bangor to Caernarfon (pronounced cair-NAR-vun) Castle, the largest Norman castle in the world. It was still in really good shape, so we were able to go inside and walk through all the dark tunnels and dungeons and climb most of the towers. It was amazing and I took a ton of photos. Since we were so impressed with Caernarfon, we took a small detour to look at another castle on the way to our next stop. I don't remember the name of it... Our second stop was a tour of the slate mines in Blaenau Ffestiniog (no idea how to pronounce that!). Apparently mining slate was a big industry here ... read more

Bore-dah! Well folks, I made it to Wales. Our plane arrived in Manchester, England at 7:30am local time on Thursday Jan. 17, the longest day of my life. We then had to go through customs (not a huge deal), claim our luggage (two large suitcases each and a carryon), and then drag our luggage across three terminals to our arranged meeting point. Tecwyn, the program director met us at 10:00 with a bus to take us to campus, but because of flight delays, we didn't leave until noon-ish, arriving in Bangor around 2:00. We barely had time to find our rooms and set down our suitcases before Tecwyn took us on a 'short' walking tour of the town. It is a beautiful place I'm sure when the sun is out and you've slept sometime in the ... read more

As a higher level music student, not only do I get two codes free every week to just compose and free voice lessons from a Welsh National Opera star, but I also get lessons on the Javanese gamelan every Sunday afternoon! Last Sunday I just stuck by the huge gong, but next week I'm hoping for the nong or maybe even the ka-nang...a unique skill, but not exactly one I could take to the streets of Dublin, where Sioned, Henrik and I hope to go for the long weekend in March. After discovering that all of us have Friday evening codes free (and, therefore, our weekend starts at 1:15 in the afternoon instead of 7), we planned a celebratory meal at the only really nice restaurant in Llantwit, only to discover that the only really nice ... read more

January Trip to Cardiff, Wales My short trip to Wales began January 13, 2008 after the Delta TransAtlantic flight, Atlanta-London. It was the start of a month in Europe with two friends from China, Dai Lejuan and Linell Davis. Dai is doing research for her Ph.D. at Cardiff University in Wales. Linell is on her long winter vacation (the Lunar New Year break) from her job as a professor in Nanjing. We have been planning this trip for about six months, when we learned that Dai would be in Europe. We are all meeting in London on January 15. Since I’m part Welsh, I decided to meet Dai in Cardiff and see a bit of Wales, even in the worst, winter weather. It rained every day, but not for long. I didn’t mind. Dai is living ... read more

Well, I know I'm back at AC, as no one is speaking English in the entire computer lab. I thought it would take me a little while longer to settle in, but I arrived at the airport and it was as if I'd never left! I was so jet lagged and exhausted (I thought it was just a cliche, but no...I had the classic crying baby two rows in front of me on my 7-hour, overnight flight) that I basically crumpled to the floor just after Xavier ran all the way across Arrivals Hall 3 to grab my waist and throw me in the air - luckily he did not make me do a backflip, a neat trick we had debuted at the dance after the Christmas party. Of course, the crumpling may have had something ... read more
