We love going to visit Trish's sister in Perth, Scotland. It's such a wonderful part of the UK and when we are there we like to find different places to explore. This time we went down to Falkirk to visit an attraction we had caught a glimpse of on BBC's The One Show back in April - The Kelpies. For some reason we thought these incredible sculptures were near Glasgow and had been built for the Commonwealth Games but Falkirk is closer to Edinburgh and this had nothing to do with the Games at all. How wrong we were! A Kelpie is a mystical being which inhabits Scotland's lochs and pools. They often take the form of a horse and this piece of Scottish folklore was the inspiration for this unusual sight. When the Forth and ... read more

Day 1 of our West Highland Way adventure Team Happy Feet arrive at Milngavie raring to go…….to the toilet!!! The conductor told us that we should ask at the office of the train station for entry to the toilet Alan asked at the office to be told press button at side of toilet door. Jenny in desperation rushed in front of the rest of us to use toilet first. Struggling with the automated door she finally placed her bottom proudly on the throne only for Alan to mischievously press the button on outside, opening the door revealing Jenny sat in all her glory with Bridget Jones pants round her ankles to a train load of passengers on platform. Afterwards we dropped off our luggage with the travel company, Travel Lite and they allowed Alan to fill ... read more

We all work together in a primary school and one silly day we decided it would be a good idea to walk the West Highland Way. So we are now about to spend the first week of our summer holidays traipsing through mud, scrambling over rocks and boulders, climbing up giant hills while trying to avoid fields of cows, blisters and of course the dreaded 'Midges'. Who had the idea first nobody will admit now. So here we are with a week to go, tired from a busy school term and in need of a relaxing break....packing our walking boots, waterproofs, midge nets, insect repellent and pee ponchos. We usually create a blog for the kids while we are away on residential with them so we thought you could all share our ups and downs as ... read more

Geo: 56.1194, -3.93588Wed been spoiled with excellent weather over the weekend. However today, bank holiday Monday was not to follow suit. Rain, wind and cold awaited us as we left the Holiday Inn around 9.30. The main attraction of the day would be Sterling Castle. New to all four of us on this roadtrip. Similar to Edinburgh, Sterling castle towers over the town on an imposing cliff ledge. Once inside its walls, we elected to join a free guided tour around the castle grounds. This guide was absolutely excellent. Well spoken and easy to understand (unlike many Scots to Australian ears), and an absolute wealth of information. We explored courtyards, Royal Apartments, the chapel of the coronation of Mary Queen of Scots, the Great Hall, museums and vaults. Despite the persistent rain we still managed to ... read more

After four days in Edinburgh it was definiatly time to get out of the city, so we hired a car in search of Loch's, Scottish Seas and Vaughn's new found hero William Wallace (he's dead btw). Driving out of Edinburgh deserves a blog entry all in itself, but I will refrain... After an awesome cooked brekkie with the Cuzzies (thanks Zoe you are amazing!) we headed towards our first destination Stirling. We found Stirling Castle up on the hill and loe and behold a statue of William Wallace which started Vaughn off on his mission to learn everything and anything about the guy that fought for the independance of Scotland from British rule. If you would like to know more, watch Braveheart....but apparently this is not a good interpretation of what really happened so Vaughn tells ... read more

We woke up early to a nice half sunny half cloudy day, after a quick breakfast we set off to Stirling to get our guided tour of the old town jail. We were greeted at the door by a grumpy old warden who lead the very funny but informative tour around the lower level cells in the jail. After some free time to wander around ourselves we went upstairs to see the upper level cells where a female tour guide showed us around. The tour explained the old jail times when men, women and children were all imprisoned and the female prisoners were responsible for cooking, cleaning, laundry and sewing within the jail while male prisoners were kept in their cells aprat from a 15 minute exercise time on the roof. The jail got deemed the ... read more

Today after a much deserved late lie, we set off to Stirling to visit a real 14thcentury castle. Stirling Castle is an amazing site as you drive into Stirling on the motor way. Its built on top of a rocky hill with a winding cobble stone road that took you to the top. On the walk towards the draw bridge was a wonderful view of the city of Stirling with the Wallace Monument beaming in the sunlight in the distance. Once through the draw bridge was the castles court yard surrounded by very tall walls designed to keep enemies out. We made our way up another hill through the inner gate where we got to see some of the amazing sculptures that were carved hundreds of years ago, to see first hand the size of the ... read more

We got a fairly early start today so that we could make it to the Loch Lomond Highland Games held at the south end of the largest lake in Scotland. The town was called Balloch and rightly so!!! Ballochs - the games had been cancelled and rescheduled for September.....well, what about our needs! The website, as recent as last night, showed nothing about the cancellation. We debated whether to stay in the area and take in the sights or to find another highland games. We decided, since there was another games not too far away (although we had already driven past it earlier that morning....) in Alva and so we headed there. On the up side, these games were a little smaller than those in Balloch and did not start up until lunch time so we ... read more

So we all got up with butterflies in our stomach anxiously awaiting the big moment. Shane and Chris headed to Stirling to wash the car and have breakfast then they headed to the hotel to get ready. Karla and Alex went to Stirling to collect the flowers then drove to Aberfoyle to sip champagne and get dressed. By 3pm we were all ready with pictures taken and slowly making final preparations and drove to the church. We were all eagerly waiting for Alex’s arrival, as the rain clouds moved off we noticed a wee bit of sun peeping through just in time. Alex steps out the car and makes her way to the church and we see the anticipation on Chris’s face to see his beautiful bride for the first time in her wedding gown and ... read more
