Stirling the home of William Wallace Our arrival was spectacular - to our surprise we found ourselves in the middle of a drug bust! Not involving us fortunately, but we were reading our map on a corner of the main street when a couple of plain clothed policemen tackled a couple of guys standing next to us! They got out their handcuffs and we took that opportunity to head to our hostel wondering what kind of place we'd arrived at. We spent a wet afternoon at Stirling Castle and it was absolutely fascinating. Different to Conwy because at Stirling they had started a 'renovation' project and were setting out to make it look like it was. The next day we caught a bus to the Wallace Monument and enjoyed the views from the top of the ... read more

Our last blog saw us driving though snow and sleet north towards Scotland. As we crossed through the border towns the snow got heavier and heavier and we really started questioning the logic of a van trip at this time of year. Once we reached Glasgow however, the snow disappeared and before we knew it we were disembarking from a ferry at Dunoon and driving alongside Loch Eck. Something very good began to happen when we started driving through the Argyll Forest Park - most of the cars disappeared, the clouds started to lift and everything started to feel a lot more relaxed. Yay, finally, this is what we had been waiting for - welcome to Scotland! After spending a freezing night in a pretty uninspiring campground in Oban, we headed off towards Glen Coe. This ... read more

Hi folks as promissed a blog has been set up this was the initial leaving the building part of our travels. The planning has been stressful lots of domestics and we eventually got there thanks to all our friends for maintaing our sanity. After several attempts at packing the car we set off on our merry way, will add photos no laughing at the poor Kangoo, heavilly laden with god knows what inside. cause we are still finding things that we didnt think we had packed. Journey was fairly straight forward but long with good company the time passed quickly. The dreaded ferry crossing for me was a delight managed a good sleep true to form ( never lost my sea legs) ... read more

We had arranged with Laura for breakfast at 8:00. Grandma, Gail and I were there two minutes early. The kids took their sweet time. No problem though because Laura was ready for us and quite happy to put together almost anything we wanted for breakfast. She had printed menus which allowed Tyler and I to order almost everything on the list. Once again we opted for the full Scottish breakfast which gave us bacon, eggs, sausage ( from a local specialty butcher), hash browns, baked beans and toast. I added a broiled tomato and Tyler, really getting into the whole Scottish thing, ordered haggis again. I didn't think it tasted nearly as badly as it sounds ( sheep's 'pluck' , minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and traditionally simmered in the ... read more

We ended up in Edinburgh after my last blog. When we arrived we went to our hotel and rested for a bit. We then made our way up to the Royal Mile, which is the road that connects Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood House, the palace currently used by the Queen on visits to Edinburgh. Both attractions are available for tours and I would highly recommend them. In between both attractions are many pubs, restaurants and other stores, generally guided for tourists, although you can find some locals. We walked up and down both ends of the Mile before my parents were tired and decided to go to bed around six. I, however, was not yet tired, so I decided to watch some local TV. The shows that I found myself gravitating towards were comedy shows on ... read more

Our full day of sight seeing on the Coach today was enjoyable (sitting). Our first stop was the town of Aberfoyle where the Scottish Wool Mill shop does a brisk business. I bought 2 wool plad scarves for myself. Our guide on the coach gave us lots of historic background while we viewed scenery that was great. We ate our box lunches at lovely senic David Marshall Park. A cottage there (perhaps the caretaker's ?) had a beautiful garden that was carefully tended. I couldn't resist taking some pictures. Our next stop was Stirling - the town and the castle. The Castle was very impressive and we could see how, this was once a walled community (in Medieval times) Robert the Bruce was the Scottish king who led the Scots to victory in the battle for ... read more

Do you find something funny/ironic about welcoming someone back to the "real" world, after they've just spent the last six weeks exploring the...well, "real" world? So now I can properly update you! And it helps to put my own recollections down. So here we go. Scotland was quick. Scotland was amazing. It was nothing short of a homecoming, of sorts, to be back in Glasgow. Just hearing the thick accents on the RyanAir flight from Oslo (which, of course, RyanAir flies out of Torp, which is over 100 km south of Oslo! Just FYI.) made me smile. Stayed at the Bunkum, which is seriously one of the best independent hostels I've ever stayed at, pure dead brilliant. I never fail to meet amazing people there. My 1st night this time around, I ran into 2 German ... read more

Today was all about the primal instinct of the male hunter gatherer! Douglas and I hired a boat and set off into the middle of Loch Leven where we spent a couple of hours fishing, I setup a 4 hook lure with a 2 gram weight and managed to haul 3 mackerel in one go. This caused a slight problem as we hadn't thought we would catch anything so didn't have a batten! Luckily an oar dealt with this issue promptly. After a couple of hours and a total of 5 fish we headed for shore and the BBQ. Nw that we are clearly seasoned hunters, we shall make for the hills and the nearest bear to wrestle!... read more
