We arrived in Split and went to our new hostel on the other side of Diocletian’s Palace. We had decided to stay in a new hostel to get a change of scenery, but decided to meet up with people from the other hostel later. We had a delicious and cheap 3 course fish dinner at a local restaurant and met up with the guys from the other hostel just as they were heading off to a pool hall. Luckily, most of them were people we had already met on Split and Brac, so we had a great time hanging out at the pool hall with a large group of friends. The next day, Alex, Emma and went in search of a rental car to drive to Plitvice (pronounced “Plit-vitz-ah”) Lakes National Park, about 2 hours away ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Dubrovnik May 14th 2010

So far, not the biggest fan of Dubrovnik. I’m waiting for a bus to go back to Split and just went to the bathroom before starting this blog. When I came out, a woman told me that I had to pay 3 Kuna to use the bathroom… It’s not much money but I can’t believe they made me pay. I guess they frequently make you pay to use the bathroom in transport stations in Europe, but my experiences in Dubrovnik can almost be summarized by that story. While the city is absolutely beautiful, it is entirely overrun with tourists (in the Old City, the part that you go to Dubrovnik for), overpriced (compared to other places in Croatia), and tacky. They even charge you to walk the walls. I’ve been to a lot of walled cities ... read more

The flight from Bergen to Split itself was amazing. The sky was clear for almost the entire flight and the views were beautiful. I’m not sure if you can take pictures on a plane but I definitely did when we flew over the Austrian Alps. The views of all fot he islands and the Adriatic Sea when we were landing were stunning and we found ourselves getting incredibly excited to land and play in the sea. Getting off the plane when traveling from a cold climate to a Mediterranean climate was incredible. Our bodies were so confused but we were happy. It was kind of strange to get on the bus to the town and find out that all of the beautiful white buildings that I had seen from the air were white because they were ... read more

Europe » Norway » Eastern Norway » Oslo April 26th 2010

We woke up around ten and took our time to get ready and eat breakfast. Our plan was to take a boat to an island in the fjord, then meet Emma’s cousin, Kristi, for lunch, then maybe a museum or something else. We had looked at the boat schedule with Jan the previous night before and he told us about the boat at 11:25, which I told him was optimistic. We decided to plan on the boat at 12:45. We didn’t make that, either. We decided to return to the pier for the boat at 3:25, and in the meantime we would wander around the fort nearby that was currently a military base, then make our way over to Kristi’s café for lunch. We approached the open gate of the fort and found ourselves face to ... read more

Emma and I finally escaped the volcanic ash cloud that stopped flights from leaving or entering the UK for six days and arrived today in Oslo, Norway. I will write more about my semester at LAMDA when I have more time, but I want to stay up to date with this current journey. Sorry about my ridiculous lack of entries throughout the semester... So to begin: the initial plan for studying abroad in London was to come home the day after the course ended (April 17th) and go back to the real world and my American life, but shortly after spending time in London and falling in love with it, I realized that this was the perfect opportunity for me to do some traveling throughout Europe after school. I realized I had both the time and ... read more

I received an email from a student at OCU asking me all kinds of questions about studying abroad in the UK and the two schools in particular. I figured my email back could be useful to other people, or at least just be good reading material. I'll post my lengthy response here. "Hey! I think it's a great idea to study abroad, especially here. I am currently trying to figure out how I can stay here forever and never have to leave so you should definitely come! As far as the two schools go, it really depends on what you're looking for. My favorite by far has been LAMDA and I will cry my eyes out when the semester is over. Basically, the two schools can be summarized as thus: Edge Hill: pros: cheaper than OCU ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » Chelsea January 17th 2010

I am about to complete my first week living in London and attending LAMDA. This has been an incredible week. I have absolutely fallen in love with London and the school. LAMDA has re-awoken my love of theatre and opened new possibilities that I might explore. I'll explain more. My flight out was delayed about two hours due to the inclement weather in the UK. The entire island had been covered in snow and very few flights had gone out. It's really unexpected because it does not snow very often in the UK, and they don't have the technology to clear the snow like we do in Colorado. In the UK, snow means life stops. I was really lucky to only be delayed two hours. The flight was not bad and I was able to sleep ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris December 19th 2009

So from the very beginning of our trip I thought I was going to go crazy. Megan and I had a flight from Liverpool John Lennon to Paris leaving at 6:40 pm and we left our hall at 3:30. We had three hours to get there, so we took our time and relaxed, going to the cafeteria to pick up a cheap dinner before we left and running some last minute errands in town. It normally takes about 40 minutes to get to the airport, so we figured that we were fine. Because of traffic and slow cafeteria lines, we didn’t get into Ormskirk until 4. There were trains at 4:20 and 4:35, so we figured that we would be fine and topped up our phone minutes, exchanged currency, etc. We just missed the 4:20 ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Clare » Ennis December 15th 2009

I took a trip to London with my friend Megan, but since I'm coming back to London next semester, I'll leave most of my London stuff for next semester. However, the major highlight of that trip was Westminster Abbey and St. Paul's Cathedral. Westminster is absolutely gorgeous for non-history folk, but for people who are particularly interested in English history, this was absolutely incredible. I was so excited the entire time that I was in the abbey. It houses the tombs of Elizabeth I, Bloody Mary, and Mary Queen of Scots, three incredibly famous queens. It also has an area called Poet's Corner with tombs and tributes to many incredibly famous poets. Here is a link for more information: http://www.westminster-abbey.org/visit-us. St. Paul's was a beautiful cathedral and provided a wonderful view of the city. Enough about ... read more

So, I'm catching up from my trips because it has been forever since I have written. I am now officially done with ALL of my work. I had to write five papers over this semester, had one exam, and one performance, which doesn't sound like much, but they grade harshly here so it is a lot more work than you would think. In total, I wrote 11,450 words and took 5 overnight trips...So it has been incredibly busy, but I can now catch up on my trips and work on the blog. Sorry if you're a subscriber, because I hope to have a lot more blogs coming and your email might get a bit crowded. We'll see, though, if I really come through. The first trip to Ireland that I went on was to Dublin on ... read more
