Horribly, we had to wake at 4:15 am to make this day work. Suitcases had to be at the bus by 5:00. Packed breakfasts were available in the lobby; mine was Chicken Coronation sandwich (mild curry with raisins - quite good). By 5:30 we were on the bus, which left at 5:40. At the nearby ferry terminal we were expeditiously directed into a line. Where we waited until shortly before the sailing at 7:30. I had taken a sea-sick pill before leaving and was wearing my sea-bands, plus I stood outside the whole trip. In fact, the Irish Sea was calm, for a sea. Most thrilling was seeing Ireland and Scotland at the same time! Both stretched long fingers of land into the water. The view was misty, probably always is. The land that we sailed ... read more

kind of touched the soul and kindled my heart ! Visited the famous Kelpies last week in Grangemouth, Falkirk. Always wanted to see them for quiet some time now but only got the chance to visit them last week. Amazing piece of work - majestic towering structures upto 5 stories building high and yet So sumptuously beautiful as well. I arrived at 7pm but due to the Sun-set being at 10pm in June in Scotland the sky was blue. I wanted to see the night view when the lights are on. So waited for a while until it was dark to see the night view of the kelpies. They light up with various colors and on my day it was neon green. It was rather mesmerizing to look at with all that green light lit-up ... read more

Inverarnan - Tyndrum 13.5 miles (15.1 actual) After a really poor night sleep -was awake from 4-6am, I was really reluctant to get up. Just wanted to stay in my bed. However, remembering how long the walk took us yesterday, I thought I’d better get going! Was still full up from last nights meal so breakfast just wasn’t very appealing this early, however knowing I had a full days walking ahead I tried to force down a bacon butty - fail! Most unusual for me! Set off about 8.50 - later than planned, but thankfully terrain/ path much better than yesterday. Much more open too - was getting really fed up with jungle view on previous days, so the open country side with views of the hills, and a better and wider path was really welcome! ... read more

Day 3 - Sunday 17/06/18; Rowardennan to Inverarnan - 13.5 miles ( 15.12 actual) Felt a wee bit stiff when I first got up but soon wore off - Michelle on the other hand was saying ouch the minute her feet touched the floor! Had breakfast about 8 then set off about 8.40. Spent about 15 mins trying to shut the case - hope the zip doesn’t burst & hope Ginger Routes employ strong drivers! ? Soon became apparent the walk was going to be a tough one. Walking alongside Loch Lomond, one minute we were high up looking down on the water, then a few minutes later we were practically walking on the shoreline., and so it continued - sharp ascents followed by steep descents. Tree roots, big boulders, small waterways with stepping stones & ... read more

Day 2; Drymen to Rowardennan, 13.5 (15.10 actual) Got up about 7 & delighted to see it was dry outside - but by time we had breakfast & got ready the rain came on. Walked a mile to rejoin WHW track & by that time was raining really heavily. Decided to take take the “alternative” route into Balmaha and avoid climbing Conic Hill. Described as a “strenuous” climb, we figured the exertion not worth it seeing as there would be zero view from top. Much the same height as Bin Hill - 323m. The first views of Loch Lomond were still breathtaking, even seen through a veil of mist & rain. I really enjoyed the parts of the walk which ran alongside the loch, however, a good % of the walk was through wooded areas with ... read more

Spoiler alert. I'm not dead or dying. Some how my 'life saving' medication ran out this morning and whereas I though I had another box I didn't. The box was simply aspirin and not the real thing. So here I am in a strange city (well Stirling isn't that strange really) without my medication. Pleading my innocent tourist story failed miserably at 2 pharmacies and I thought I would need to make an appointment with a GP (is my life worth that much?) or go spend the next eternity at the local A and E hospital. Neither option appealed. I ended up at a clinic in the city and the receptio and doctor treated me as an emergency case, prescribed medication as required and did not charge anything. Moreover even the script is free in Scotland ... read more

Another win with Airbnb. Terrific Edwardian period house in what is obviously quite a prestigious neighbourhood and a room with the biggest king size bed I've ever seen. The fittings are lovely, the ceilings at least 12 feet high and the house is resplendent with all the facilities we could possibly need or want. The host is charming and even her dogs are delightful. She has an Airdale that is really good, he's big but not wiry like you usually see them. The only rule here that the dogs are not allowed in our room because they would be straight onto the bed. The bed would easily accommodate us and dogs but the white linen sheets may not look as pristine as they do now! It was golf course day today. We drove to the Carnoustie ... read more

In Gießen! Sachen gibt's... Viel zu erzählen gibt es eigentlich nicht. Der erste Tag ist landschaftlich eher unspektakulär. Es ... read more

Now that you are completely aware of your surroundings and have the rhythm of working, hiking, talking and sleeping, time goes rapidly. And this week was full of walking and talking. Last Friday I went to Edinburgh with two colleagues and my manager. He’d rented a car because he needed to go to the Ikea for a new couch, and offered us a lift. After an hour in the car, blasting metal and singing along to the songs, we arrived at the foot of the Arthur’s Seat. Because we all had been to Edinburgh before, we decided to take a long hike on the mountain. With a beautiful site from the cliffs, we walked around for a few hours. Although it was windy, it was warm and when the sun broke through the clouds even hot. ... read more

So a Dutchman, two Germans and a couple of French girls walk into a pub. Is this the beginning of a joke? No, not if a backpackers hostel is one block away from the pub. This is how I spend my first evening of my ten week adventure in Stirling, Scotland. On the 1st of September, I arrived in Edinburgh after a short and relaxed flight. I took a tram to Haymarket and from there I took to the train to Stirling. I still had some cash from my week in Canterbury, which came in handy. As I sat in the train, enjoying the unexpectedly sunny weather, I thought about the summer and made a list of things I definitely want to see and do while I’m in Scotland. I still had a smile on my ... read more
