Sunday, 3 July 2022. Day 1 on the West Highland Way (WHW) from Milngavie to Drymen. 13.5 miles by Garmin. 658 feet elevation gain. 7 hours and 10 minutes of walking The luggage transfer service required our bags out at 0730 for pick up and transfer to our next hotel in Drymen. Greg the driver sent a brief outline of his background. He is a royal army veteran having served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Since our CPAPs were a third piece of luggage we paid 65 GBP to have them included in our group luggage. As mentioned in an earlier blog that meant a 0530 wake up call to get everything broken down, organized and packed up so we could have the bags ready to take outside at 0730. Greg should up on the minuted. ... read more

2 July 2022, Saturday Arrived in Milngavie, the starting point for the West Highland Way. Jet-lag affects one differently on different trips. Having slept little on the flight over to Edinburgh and with a 5 hour time zone change we slept better and longer the first night than last night. Finally got to sleep about 0500 local time and woke to the alarm at 0830. Organizing and packing for the train trip took more than an hour. Have to disconnect and pack the CPAPs; get the cords and adapters for charging the cell phones, watches and computers packed in the appropriate bags or in coats to carry. Thus we only got to our breakfast at about 1000. The standard hot British breakfast consists of sausage (links and blood), ham, broiled tomato halves, hash brown potato patties, ... read more

This blog will be a synopsis of our walk of the West Highland Way in July of 2022. This was the trip planned in 2020 but delayed with COVID issues. Our group has changed over the course of the two years. My wife and I and our friends Jo Finestead and Norma Wiebe and Sandy Clements have walked the Coast to Coast and a few other treks together the last 10-15 years so we will see how age and the terrain treat us on this walk. We left our new home in San Antonio at Blue Skies of Texas, a CCRC, and traveled by car to Dallas-Ft Worth where we stayed with cousin Chuck who had hoped to make the trip but outrageously high airfares forced him to withdraw. Then on to cousins in Fairfield Bay, ... read more

We woke up refreshed after our day of vacation from the vacation. My stomach seemed to suddenly be fine so we looked forward to a good day (and it was.) We found our way to the breakfast room; it was in the subbasement and very small for a hotel with at least 800 rooms. As a follow up to my comment earlier regarding certain types of travelers; if there is one thing we learned in our years and miles of travel, that no matter where we are in the world one thing always remains the same, people no matter where they are from have zero elevator etiquette. As we were going down to breakfast, we first let the man in a wheelchair on, then made sure he was comfortable with us also riding down with him, ... read more

Today was scheduled to be Museum and Sunday Roast Day, it turned out to be sleep and do-nothing day. We had already decided the night before to cancel our Sunday Roast reservation because my stomach was just not going to be up to it. We had cancelled our dinner reservation for tonight earlier in the week, as we anticipated we would be quite full from our Sunday Roast Lunch. None of this happened of course. We did sleep until about 11, then Jerry showered and was going to go to the Huntarian Art Gallery, but by the time he was ready he would have only had an 90-minutes to get there and enjoy the museum. Instead, he went out and about doing some other exploring. He also stopped at a pharmacy to and got some OTC ... read more

Half of the day was on the train from inverness to Glasgow. I had hoped to get all caught up on the blog, but only managed one entry before I could no longer keep my eyes open. For most of the journey we had the entire first-class coach to ourselves. The scenery on the way down was very beautiful through the heart of the highlands. Sleep did win out for Jerry he was so tired his eyes were burning. I nodded off here and there while trying to take in the view. Our hotel here in Glasgow is actually at the train station, but not the station which we arrived. We could have walked, but again the luggage and being tired just screamed taxi. The taxi rank was directly in front of the station, so no ... read more

Anyone else gone wandering in Glasgow and found themselves in the backstreets of Gotham city, USA instead? No? Well it happened to myself and Glyn today, I kid you not. The alarm went off at 7.30am, and it being a Sunday means only one thing, I’m on Wade holiday where I often get up earlier than I would for work so that we can cram in as much as possible until we both pass out exhausted at the end of the day. Glyn was perturbed at me setting an alarm that’s not on the hour. I find this hilarious and asked that we set if for 7.12am, I got frowned at for that. A walk that should have taken 40 minutes, didn’t because we went off piste a few times, took us through areas with awesome ... read more

Having been allowed a lie-in until what holiday-Claire calls almost lunchtime……7:30am…..we headed into town. Glasgow was very quiet and yes I know it’s Sunday but, for such a populous city, the streets were mainly devoid of what you may know as people. Great stuff. We had a few hours until we were due to checkout so plenty of time to walk to the cathedral and necropolis. There are plenty of old buildings in Glasgow to photograph, plenty of decay and dereliction too as well as litter bins almost as tall as Claire! What a city! Somehow she didn’t fall in any and didn’t accidentally fall into the cat cafe we passed either…..thank goodness we only had limited time!! Despite the walking last night and lots more today we still never found what could be described as ... read more

Today we set off for our first holiday since July 2019! Woo hoo! Leaving home at lunchtime meant that we had beautiful golden light dappling the amazing landscape around the Lake District. There’s many motorways I hate, but the bit of M6 just north of Kendal is awesome. And it’s always been pretty empty when I’ve driven on it. The more north we got, the closer to we were to dark clouds. This is probably due to the North being uphill, or so Glyn says. There was intermittent rain but nothing heavy. To be honest I’m disappointed by the lack of snow. I saw a bit on distant mountain tops, but nothing worth writing about. Oh…. Arriving in Glasgow during the early evening, we found our Budget Ibis hotel on the Quays quite easily. The area ... read more

Remember in the good old days when you could just go on holiday without having to check whether you were actually allowed to go on holiday? When facemarks were just things worn in the far east and to filter Claire’s farts? It all seemed so simple back then. Save up, buy tickets, go. We’ll never take it for granted again! Even now, just driving up into Scotland, we had to check what the restrictions were up here and whether we needed to shove things into our mouths and noses beforehand. Things are a bit stricter up here as they’re lucky enough not to have the partying custard lump in charge of their guidelines and most people are more sensible and thoughtful about wearing masks. The drive up was a bit like driving in the States: turn ... read more
