April 24, 2012 – St Andrews We're here! We arrived this morning in St Andrews, and Damian reckons he's died and gone to heaven. There are more golf courses here than you can poke a stick at (or a club at) and they're all beautiful courses. You drive along a road, to see sheep and dairy farms mingling with golf courses, all nestled up against the ocean. I'm in heaven too – the countryside is just beautiful, so you could say that St Andrews has been Tailormade just for us! The golfists amongst you should get that wee pun LOL We have spent a wonderful day exploring Cambo Estate. Cambo Estate is stunning. There is no other word to describe it. Cambo House itself is awe-inspiring – a grand manor home. We are staying in “The ... read more

We’re in a campground near Whitby, (4/14/12) looking out over the North York Moors National Park, in northern England. When we were enjoying the gorgeous warm weather in late March, the locals warned us that this same weather pattern happened las year and that was IT for the summer. June and July were cold and rainy. Oh, no we thought, it can’t get that cold. Well, guess what, it has and is and has been predicted to be. The temperature was minus 7C. in Edinburgh this morning and 4 C. in our MH at first light. We were even caught in a hailstorm, while out wandering around a village. The local kids loved it of course, even though they were chasing Easter Egg clues all over the National Trust sites during that 2 week vacation. The ... read more

Greg was up at 5am, out of the room by 5.15am and he headed over to line up to get on the Old Course to play. I called at 8am, i could hear lots of wind in the background, but GREAT news, he was on and playing. A group of 4 had pulled out so he'd just hit off and thought the ball had hit the water!!! Will leave it to him to fill in the rest. Kids and i trying to get organised and head to the movies. Went and saw Pirates, pretty good, great bus trip to the top of Dundee and back to the snow. Weather today back in Yorkshire was blizzards, again more great luck! or a St Andrews miracle. St Andrews, let me set the scene. 6.15am, 1.5 degrees, the wind ... read more

Saint Andrews is a small town on the west coast, about two hours from Edinburgh by bus. We don't know for sure, but we guessed it's about the size of Salem, MA. It is known as the birthplace of golf (whether or not this is true, I don't know, but there was a fairly large golf course and several golf shops around town) and home of the oldest University in Scotland, which seems to have inspired a ton of international students (many from the US) to study abroad here. Similar to Edinburgh, American accents in this town were everywhere. The town looked to me like a cross between a fishing village and a college town. Interestingly, the same can be said for Salem. Unlike Salem, Saint Andrews has not beaten the daylights out of the dead ... read more

“So, who was St. Fillan?” I asked this question as I tried to peer through the bars and cross-shaped metal adornment that blocked the opening of his ‘cave’. My host Richard and I had been wandering through the tiny, and beautiful, coastal village of Pittenweem, Scotland when we happened upon this famous – at least to Scots and the religious – site. According to no less an authority than the BBC, St. Fillan spent most of his remarkable life “…as a hermit in the cave in the fishing village which came to be named after him (Pittenweem means ‘place of the cave’), it was said that he managed to pray and write in the secluded gloom of the cave by means of a light which glowed from his left arm as he wrote with his right.” ... read more

The day started off sunny and pretty cool. Today we travelled to St. Andrews and then to Edinburgh. At St Andrews we learned that the Scots put up St. Andrew’s church to show the cardinals in England that they were capable of having their own church separate from England. The church supposedly had some bones from one of the disciples, St. Andrew and in the day people would go on pilgrimages just to see this church and touch the casket holding the bones of St. Andrew. The church was enormous and very ornate. Later a man named John Knox gave a rousing speech at the local Presbyterian church denouncing the Catholic religion and how the bishops lived in opulence while the people were in poverty. This led to the whole town converting to Protestant and heading ... read more

Iconic aircraft from the cold war warrior "Vulcan" to state-of-the-art "Typhoons", roared over Fife in Scotland on Saturday at the Leuchars Airshow. This year's event was a celebration of old and new to mark 100 years of the RAF at Leuchars. This was my first visit to the airshow and I hope the closure of the airforce base and the movement of all operations to RAF Lossiemouth in 2013 under government cutbacks, does not threaten any possible future events at this location. There was an especially warm welcome for the Red Arrows aerobatic display team from everyone in the crowd who broke out into spontaeneous applause after they tragically lost pilot Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging in a crash in Bournemouth last month. The crowd started clapping arms held above their heads in a moment of joint ... read more

We got up early for us on the trip...7:30 AM - unimaginable!!!! ;) We were both super draggy from being out the night before, but me being the crazy organizer that I am, I wanted to make sure that we got to the station and grabbed our tickets with plenty of time. So, we locked up and said goodbye to our flat and Edinburgh, and took a taxi to Waverly Station (which seemed super lazy because it's not that far away, we just didn't want to drag our bags over the mound). We had no problem collecting our tickets, so we stopped for a coffee before jumping on our train to Leuchars, which is where you have to take the train to in order to get to St. Andrews. An hour train ride and a short ... read more

Once more the travel Gods have smiled upon me and granted me an extended leave from work. Just 4 short weeks this time, long enough hopefully to stop and draw breath, try and recapture my appreciation of life. Have been looking forward to this trip pretty much since I returned from my last one but don’t think I’ve ever been this disorganised. Hope it’s not an omen of things to come…. Eeek! 1st off I booked myself a barganeous flight from Edinburgh to KL, leaving Feb 12th and returning Feb 13th (thought I was booking March 13th obviously) giving me a long and luxurious 4 hours on holiday – probably not even enough time to make my way through customs and book in for the flight home. Of course it was non refundable, (with my luck ... read more
