Day seven---St. Andrews Slept in for the first time since the vacation began. Our friends room is so awesome, they have this HUGE baywindow that overlooks the rooftops of St. Andrews.... Check out the view from their room: http://sugarmountain.vox.com/library/post/vacation--day-seven.html Seriously...that's the view....it's FABULOUS! And the sky is really that blue! Took a nice leisurely shower, got dressed and headed out with Husband and friends in search of cappucinnos and snacks. Had cappucino and bagel at this really neat coffee shop called BeanScene and then walked around St. Andrews a bit before lunch. We grabbed sandwiches and walked across the street to one of the quads...I believe the medical building quad (gorgeous) and had lunch. Check out photos of the quad: http://sugarmountain.vox.com/library/post/vacation--day-seven.html After lunch, we took... read more

Day nine--St. Andrews After all the running around we did in Edinburgh and Stirling, it was definitely time for relaxation. Husband and I got up and walked to BeanScene for breakfast. (Loved their cinnamin-rasin bagels) Had a nice chat about the vacation thus far, looked through some tourist pamplets and then parted ways. (Husband was going to have a "boys day" with our friends and I was going to explore St. Andrews...and yes...when I say explore...I mean shop) I know I've mentioned this before...but St. Andrews is beautiful... Check out my photos of St. Andrews: http://sugarmountain.vox.com/library/post/vacation--day-nine.html As much as I love being with my husband...I really enjoyed this time alone. Actually, I just really enjoyed not having to worry about someone else getting tired of walking or not wanting to go into the shops with me.... ... read more

Day three---London to St. Andrews Got up early, showered, packed up and grabbed breakfast at the hotel. They serve grilled tomatoes with breakfast. Weird. Started the drive from London to St. Andrews at approximately 8 a.m. The country-side was.....magnificent. Stopped off at an OK Diner for lunch...this was funny...it was a diner in the UK trying to look American. Saw more gorgeous country-side..... Though I didn't get any pictures, we also happened to drive right by Sherwood forest (yeah, that Sherwood forest) and Nottinghamshire. So cool! Finally, on the other side of Northumberland National Park and many hours later....we reached SCOTLAND!!!!!!!!! Once in Scotland, we stopped off in Jedburgh for some fish and chips and then finished the journey to St. Andrews. Once in St. Andrews, we invaded our friends apartment, met some of their friends, ... read more

So Kaitlyn and I have returned from the beautiful and ancient city of St. Andrew's. As daughters of the eastern shore line of America, it was like a homecoming to be able to sit by the sea. There is nothing like the feeling the wind in our face and smelling the scent of salt on the air. The golf courses are nice and all (though I'm sure golf enthusiasts would kill us for our lack of exuberance), but give us the sand shore and craggy rocks any day. We had wonderful luck when it came to weather, the light rain showers threatened on the weather report didn't hit untill we had loaded back on the coach home. We started with a beach glass hunting expedition, I was very proud to have found a bright blue piece ... read more

We have just arrived in St. Andrews and finally found time to set up our blog. So far....we have been many places (but that is for another blog). We pulled into St. Andrews the morning of September 20 and could not believe how pretty it was. The actual University is spread throughout the town, it is hard to distinguish University buildings from all the other buildings in town. Our dorm is called Wardlaw and it is a part of University Hall. Wardlaw is the only all girls dorm...standard. At first we were put into a beautiful room overlooking the ocean in the back corner of the castle. The room was so big it made our beds look tiny....pretty much a "princess room". Unfortunately, we are only international students, and got moved to the servants quarters. (not ... read more

Southward in the rain Well - the plan for today was to see the ruins of Dunottar Castle just south of Stonehaven and then Glamis Castle, St. Andrews and finishing up at Crail in the East Neuk of Fife. But it’s absolutely miserable out today, drizzle alternating with downpours and strong winds. So - we drove out to Dunottar anyway in hopes that the rain would ease up by the time we got there - nope! Was pelting down when we got there. We pulled into the castle car park and looked at the long (at least a quarter mile) walk out to the ruins overlooking the sea and didn’t even get out of the car. I thought about jumping out and grabbing a quick photo at least, but it was raining too hard and you ... read more

It's nearly a week since we got home and I thought I'd better just finish off the blog. Typically, having travelled from HK we got as far as Berwick on Tweed and got kicked off the train because of flooding on the line. I was really gutted to think we'd finish up with a bus trip home but after an hour we were able to squeeze on a north bound train and get right through to Inverkeithing where Mum and Dad were waiting. There were lots of tears - relief maybe??? We stayed with Mum and Dad for 4 nights before moving back into Limekilns. Thank goodness Rog, Mum and Dad had been sorting things out. The house looked great, the garden was tidy, the car was ready to go and there was a welcome home ... read more

May 8 -14 London - Scotland - London It is with great sadness that we are saying goodbye to Scotland. It really has been a holiday away from a holiday. We have had long sleeps (9-10 hours each night) in comfortable beds, beautiful home cooked meals, and generally been looked after as family. After the intensity of the past three weeks, that is exactly what we have needed. Not to say that we have not got out and enjoyed Scotland, it has just been at a reduced pace and increased comfort level. The increased comfort started in London, where we upgraded our hostel room from a 6-share to a double. I have no problem with communal living, but after three weeks of it, craved some privacy. Nonetheless, we were still up at 6am to catch the ... read more

Well, our 3 months lazing period has come to an end again as Alan has got another contract down in Knutsford. He has left today to start work there again tomorrow and Beth and I will be following on shortly to stay down there full time, returning to Uddingston every second or third weekend to make sure our house is still standing. The plan actually was that we would both find work in Glasgow or poss Edinburgh but unfortunately Financial Services hasn't got much to offer by way of decent contracts in Scotland at the moment so we're just embracing the change again and heading back down South. We were dead organised and found a lovely little house in Knutsford to rent for the duration, but on the day we were due to finalise everything the ... read more

Hello All! I thought I would try the travel blog thing to actually keep track of this trip and all the crazy trips and exciting adventures. So Welcome! So I guess of course I should start with the trip over... Day 1/2: Silly me, I stayed up most of the night and thought I would make it up during the flight over as I've done before and flew from st. louis to chicago (O'Hare for all of you familiar with THAT airport...) and had no problem, then had to transfer to the international terminal b/c i flew with Aer Lingus. What a differnt world! After standing in line for 1 1/2 hrs to go through security it's like you actually go to a different country. The restrooms are now labeled TOILETS and there are little bars ... read more
