Well Summer really has hotted up and being such a nice day the crew figured that a trip out of London was needed. We decided to take in some English histroy and head to Heaver Castle the childhood home of Anne Boylen, one of Henry's unfortunate wives! As usual the team pulled together to pack a picnic lunch and we headed off to the Enlish Countryside. The castle iteself was more of a house, so no ramparts and battlements, but it did have extensive grounds and great gardens. When we were done soaking up its rich history we ended up at the local boozer and downed a few ales (made a change from the typical Stella diet) and mingled with the locals before heading back to London. A few of us kicked on......I vaguely recall Jax ... read more

Well, after being away almost 6 months it was nice to get some visitors from home. First it was my sister and her husband Paul. They were taking long service leave and doing the grand European tour, with London being one of their destinations. They got to see what a London pad was like after I crammed them into my single bedroom in Hammersmith and slept in the lounge. My housemates didn't mind. Day 1 and we went to the Ship on the river in Hammersmith.....where I introduced them to Snakebites......consequences.....well the next day's siteseeing was a little slower paced. We walked around London (given it was a fine day) and went to the London Eye, walked along Westminster bridge, up and down the Southbank and generally had a pretty relaxing day. I think they were ... read more

Well I survived my first Henley Regatta. Having never been near a rowing competition getting the chance to dress up in proper Henley attire, jump on a riverboat with 60 other antipodeans was an opportunity too good to refuse. The crew (who are a fantastic bunch of people) set out from Hammersmith to Henley from Paddington station (yep the one with the little brown bear). It was first beers early as we loaded onto the boat from the shoreline and spent the day cruising up and down the Thames adjacent to the rowing. The weather was great, at time sweltering, but mostly fine and the company was just awesome. Afterwards we headed to the Angel, that famous Henley pub on the river to continue festivities!... read more

So I guess after Germany, a huge house party a week later, another full on weekend in Madrid a quiet weekend is in order.........well not quite. The Madrid weekend was followed up by the Gatecrasher Summer Sound System Festival in Northhampton (about 3 hrs Nth of London).......we managed to get a group of around 25 together and headed to an all nite rave........great fun, but totally exhausted afterwards........no photo's though (am sorry about that), but it really wasn't a visual thing. Just when you thought the month couldn't get any bigger, we we ended it with a going away party for friends of our heading away on a van tour or Europe (lucky sods). Brad, Gendy, Aeneas and Frith departed England's cloudy shores in early July, but that wasn't before we gave them a huge send ... read more

As anyone who has had the pleasure of attending the RTMC Chilwell will know, the mobilisation course involves admin. Lots of admin. And no shortage of queues. As I sat in the one of the latter I had time to muse on why I was here. An old Army adage states, “never volunteer for anything” and to this I would add “especially the morning after a good night in the mess”. It was such an evening and such a rash action that led me to be selected as Adjutant of a large military facility “somewhere in the Balkans”. The alternate title for the post was “Camp Staff Officer” but I have tried to suppress this after too many references to Captain Darling, “by the left, quick mince” and joining the élite pink berets. The joining instructions ... read more

I still haven't left. But I'm having a great time in Norfolk - bar the many injections. I've decided to visit South America on my travels. It sounds fantastic - cheap, and breath-taking. The downside is that I have to be injected against just about everything - I need a yellow fever certificate just to get in, rabis, hepatitus B, TB, tetanus, polio etc etc are all recommended - I'm mid way through the course of injections. Hey at least I'll be around for the world cup. I've been visiting friends around Norfolk - some that I haven't seen for 5 years or more, wierd the way with some people you can just pick up right where you left off - just with more stuff to talk about. Here are some photo's of Norfolk - I ... read more

We weren't even married for a year when we headed off for this huge challenge so far away from home and loved ones. We really learnt to rely on each other and to work together,it wasn't always easy but we got through it stronger and with a whole bunch of fond memories and experiences. We headed off to our first live-in pub job at the Red Lion Pub, established way back in the late 18th century in a tiny litlle village called Betchworth which is in Surrey, South East of London. This was a whole new experience for us, living and working in one place.. There was a bus stop right outside the pub that we could take into the next town,Dorking, it had a bit more to offer than Betchworth's Post Office, Church and ... read more

I think I'm up to Update Number 4 or 5 which is not too bad considering I've been away about 4 months. Time has flown as it does when u r having a ball. The subject of this update is the inaugural Australia v New Zealand cricket game A couple of weeks ago (18 May 02) two groups of 11 players played out an all mighty battle for cricket supremacy at the Fulham Park Cricket Ground (in London's SW). The game was aimed at righting a wrong perpetrated on International cricket many years ago, and whilst Brain Mechechnie and Trevor Chappel were invited to attend it was left to a motley bunch of proud Aussies and Kiwi's to attempt to salvage some pride. For the Aussies it was a case of having heard those whinging Kiwi's ... read more

I left Norfolk when I was 18 to go to Uni and apart from the long summer breaks whilst a student I haven't been back for more than a week at any one time. It's a bit strange being back. Hempstead is a small village very near Holt, six miles south of Sheringham. It has the grand total of 72 houses, 1 post box, 1 church, 1 public telephone box and fortunately 1 pub. It's a complete contrast to London - time seems to have slowed right down - I've been back about a week but it feels like a month. The event of the week has been the birth of a foal across the road - the photos here are when it was only about 12 hrs old. Already brave - after I had stood ... read more
