One of the things I was most looking forward to on my extended holiday was visiting the many museums and art galleries. I studied Art History in university and developed a great appreciation for the Great Masters. And what better place to start than London, home to the British Museum and National Gallery (among others, but I'll get to those in a later blog). The National Gallery was first. Its work range from the Gothic period through to Romantic and Impressionist movements of the 19th century. It was the most amazing feeling to see paintings that I had only previously seen in textbooks and slideshows "in the flesh." Back in the year 2000, I was a 21 year old boy who dreamed of seeing the world. I did not know what I would find when I went out in to the world, and I had no real idea of where I should go if I did go out to see the world. I just knew that I wanted to get out there and have some fun and open my eyes to a different way of life. I was working at a fashion outlet at Bicester Village, and was feeling very underwhelmed by life. I spent 3 great years studying for my degree in Oxford. It is a lovely city and well worth visiting if you are in England. It is just an hour or so from London but far enough away to feel like you have entered some strange time warp where you may well find people walking around in tweed, wearing "sub fusc" (gown, mortar board, etc) and speaking in very posh accents! Any trip to Oxford would not be complete without a visit to the colleges. The university is made up of over 30 colleges, which range from housing 50 students to a few hundred.
