6 locks, 392 in total. Having been on less popular canals for a couple of weeks, we really enjoyed the interaction with other boaters at the locks today; we swapped stories of the Kennet & Avon with a boater who'd left there a few years ago, which reminded me that I hadn't mentioned that we've met 2 other boats and boaters from the K & A that we've known a few years – About Time at Marple and Gongoozler at Cheddleston, so we're all a long way from home this year. We left Stoke behind us comparatively quickly as we were never near the centre of the city. There were a few grotty sections but then a more rural setting. We're moored just before Barlaston, where the canal goes through the Wedgwood estate. They moved much ... read more

3 locks, 386 in total. We headed back in the rain to Etruria, junction of the Caldon and Trent & Mersey, stopping once to visit the Emma Bridgewater pottery, which either didn't have the full range or else had stopped making some items, although there were mugs galore. The canal was very winding and the wind gusting from many directions - not ideal conditions. We were both concentrating so hard at one point, watching the narrow bridge on a sharp bend when suddenly we saw the staircase lock ahead of us - we'd already passed the lock moorings by that time so John had to hold the boat by the lock gates whilst the lock slowly filled - oops. I wanted to visit the Etruria Industrial Museum on its large, well landscaped site but it seems ... read more

6 locks, 383 in total. Not much to mention today (ok – I can hear the collective sigh of relief). We decided to stick to moorings that we knew were good as we returned towards Stoke which meant a short day today. The fates conspired against us a little with many boats coming in the opposite direction, often involving manoeuvres in tight places. Also our entry to the last of the Stockton Brook locks was blocked by a huge section of reed bed, upside down in the canal. I've no idea how others had got past but it had now drifted so that navigation was impossible. For the good of all, it had to go. Moving it provided me with enough of a workout to last a month, after walking across a 6” wide length of ... read more

6 locks, 377 in total. A there-and-back day today, motoring to Cheddleton, turning round and motoring back to last night's mooring. I hope we don't have a repeat of last night's extremely heavy rain though – I was mopping up a flow of water underneath the stern door at 2 am. We had a lucky escape yesterday as one boat moored next to a wasp nest - quiet overnight but aggressive this morning. The Caldon Canal really is very pretty once you're away from Stoke and its environs – not the rugged scenery of the Peak Forest but undulating pastures, horses and cattle grazing, deciduous trees giving some areas a park-like feel. The canal is not very straight and there are numerous chicanes which I assume used to be bridge sites but there seemed to be ... read more

5 locks, 371 in total. Another day when we seemed to miss the rain, not that I'm complaining. We motored the last couple of miles to Stockton Brook, through 2 drawbridges, and were just in time to meet Barbara and Ellie, who came bearing gifts in the shape of homemade honey cakes – yummy and many thanks, both for the cakes and for coming to visit. The locks were quite difficult so Barbara and Ellie had a fairly hard introduction to canal life. Once through the 5 locks we walked back to the village for a pub lunch, only to find that the one remaining pub did not serve food - *sigh* - so we cobbled together some lunch on board and then motored a little further to absorb the pastoral setting of this part of ... read more

4 locks, 366 in total. We woke up to grey skies and the prospect of rain so decided to walk round Westport Lake before setting off. It was formed in the 19th century I believe when old coal workings subsided and has been updated more recently with a bias towards nature; the all-round path is ideal for prams, joggers, toddlers on bikes, etc. There is a visitor centre showing all the wild fowl that use the lake. We approached the old industrial area of Stoke-on Trent on the T & M canal; the canal was very wide here, almost certainly because of the amount of traffic there would have been in the Potteries heyday. All goods in and out would have been transported by boat. So many of the old potteries have gone, buildings either lying ... read more

1 lock, 362 in total. Rain, more rain, and heavy rain. Did we want to climb Mow Cop in this? – not really. Was the view gong to be any good when we got there? – unlikely. We waited for 45 minutes and decided to abandon the plan, a decision which made more and more sense as the wet day progressed. We motored the last stretch of the Macclesfield to a lock with a 1 foot drop – this was the original end of the Macc – the Trent & Mersey built and controlled the link section onto the Trent & Mersey proper. To accommodate the difference in levels between the two canals without digging more locks and cuttings, the last part of the Macc crosses the T & M by aqueduct and then loops round ... read more

0 locks, 248 in total. The rain from yesterday afternoon continued overnight and for the first part of this morning so we listened to Hugh Laurie on Desert Island Discs before shopping and taking on water when the rain had virtually stopped. Something I forgot to mention yesterday – we went through a short tunnel which had been rough hewn through the red sandstone – no brick lining at all - the surface was very uneven and we had to watch our heads. Fewer and shorter cuttings today which was a relief. First area of interest was the Shelmore Embankment, one mile of endless grief and expense to the canal company in general and Thomas Telford in particular. It was only necessary because Lord Anson of Norbury Park didn't want his pheasant covert disturbed or his ... read more

0 locks, 247 in total. The Shropshire Union is a reasonably straight canal, very wide in places and almost impossibly narrow in others. We had an easy 2 ½ hour run to Breward (pronounced Brood) after a trip into Morrisons via towpath, bridge, footpath and paved walkway – not a car in sight. The views were good and there were several private mooring sections which is great for being nosey about other boats. There were also more than the average apparently unused and unloved boats, particularly here at Breward, which we don't understand. The boat opposite us this afternoon has large weeds growing in the gunwales! Breward is a thriving village, despite its relatively small size – 2 church primary schools, one middle school and a private girls school. Also a Co-op and the largest Spar ... read more

1 lock, 248 in total However hard it is working the locks, it's still so much more interesting than just motoring. There were plenty of boats to look at again today but there is a limit to the interest of deep, wooded cuttings. For once the weather forecast was accurate and we managed to moor before the rain came, as planned. We saw another kingfisher (we're averaging one a week!), more herons and a field of enormous rabbits. We also met a stream of hired boats coming the other way, possibly fresh out from Norbury Wharf although a midweek start is unusual. We are moored at Gnosall which has a huge stretch of visitor moorings but sadly little else to attract, particularly in the rain, but I have internet signal today so two days' blogs and ... read more
