People from England who I had met on my travels all got excited when the topic of thrill rides came up because Alton Towers was the place to go while in England. Hannah and I were up and on our way early that day so we could have the most time possible at Alton Towers. It took us just under 2 hours to get there and I was so excited, I couldn’t wait. Once we arrived we bought tickets and headed inside, I had no idea where to start so I let Hannah lead the way. The first ride was called Hex, and the line as totally empty, we went straight in. I had no idea of what to expect going into this ride but when it finished I was amazed. It was great, not a ... read more

Kinda cloudy day but no rain and it was warm…Mel and her madre took me out to the city of Lichfield--apparently it is a “city” because it has a cathedral and if a town doesn’t have one it is called a town or a village. The Lichfield cathedral is the only cathedral in England that has three spirals…fancy that! The city itself is adorable with hidden areas that reminded Mel and I of such places as diagon alley from harry potter...hehe. Her mom took me for tea and cake at another cute little pub called the “Hedgehog.” So today was my last day in Newborough where Mel lives…I was sad to already be leaving because it was such a unique and amazing experience in the country sides of England. Definitely ten times more breathtaking than in ... read more

Sooo the journey begins... Arrived at the Gatwick airport at 7am on Sat, July 19...blahh didn't sleep much b/c too excited, but I was picked up by Melissa, buddy who lived down the hall from me in first year at UBC. My first awakening that I was in another country was when I went for the drivers side of the car to get in and Mel was like "what are ya doing?"...yeahhhhh you sit on the right side..oops But we drove out 3 hours to her hometown, Burton-upon-Trent....close to Nottingham!! Gorgeous country side just as you would imagine..WOW! Rolling hills of barley and crops with some random trees and hedges lining the two laned roads. Truly scenic! We were both exhausted when we finally got to her home--me from flying and her from waking up at ... read more

This is just a short message. More of a test than anything else. I am one of nine teachers about to fly out to Estonia for a week of our half term. Our time will be spent visiting schools of Estonia to learn about the educational system and attempt to map it on to our own to see if we might improve how we and / or our schools approach teaching and learning. Each day will end in a meeting in which the nine of use will discuss what has been experienced and learnt. I will attempt to write a blog after each meeting and post pictures of what has been seen and experienced. Till tomorrow........ read more

We collected half my family in the Venga Bus and headed to the Crewe Arms for just a quiet lunch with about 20 of my rellies - great to get them all together as only see them once every 3 years !! Rich was trying to work out the northern lingo but seemed to be keeping up quite well. Later on we watched the All Blacks play nicely with the Portugese and Rich became an All Black for one night only..... ... read more

So we left Mikey and Kirsty's about 11ish with a little bit of a sore head and headed up North to Stoke on Trent (where all the houses look the same) to catch up with the family. First stop in our bus was to cousin Mandy and Nik's then headed round to see the oldies (Grandad and Lil) to catch up and hear some of the famous Grandad stories (which he did in true style) and even cousin Kate dropped by. Evening was spent catching up with some more of the Jones's at Cousin Martin's house and his lovely wee family. Got to see all pretty much and even got to sample some fine English curry much to Rich's delight. A few family photos shots.... ... read more

Another weekend, another festival. This time Brigid and I headed to Staffordshire for V Festival. While not as muddy as Glastonbury, I was certainly happy to have my wellies with me. V was also a lot wetter than Glastonbury - it rained off and on on the Saturday and for most of the Sunday. It was all a bit much really. Another annoying thing was that they made you queue for beer vouchers and then queue again for beer - I didn't like that system at Livid in Sydney, and the English version did not impress either. On the plus side, the venue was a lot smaller, and it was easy to move from stage to stage. We checked out the Killers (crap sound - again - what is it with the Killers?), Kasabian, the Foo ... read more
