November '09: Newsflash: The Big Boy is tying the knot again - third time lucky, you might say. And this could be my chance to redeem myself - to offset the mordant humour and persecution of Namibian over the previous blog entries. It could have been, but where is the fun in that?… That terrible old curmudgeon ( my dear old friend, Namibian) is settling, once again, for suffering until death. Well, it shouldn’t last long, then - six more birthdays is the time span I estimate before expiry. Anyway, Namibian is finally making an honest woman out of long-standing partner, Janet. And I, obviously, am the best man. ‘I know it’s a long way for you to come,’ croaks Namibian on the telephone, ‘so I’ve got you a hotel room…and a woman for the night.’ ... read more

Well at last I'm on my way, though I did have a bit of a fright when the lady who checked me onto to my flight, offered me a full refund on my flight ticket if I couldn't prove I was leaving Singapore within 3 months. A prebooked bus ticket was not good enough for her, on no, booked flights only are accepted. Having got through the ticket hiccup I resisted duty free, which for me is unknown, (OK I bought a disposable watch, which I know the mossy killer DEET will disolve by the end of my travels) I borded my plane and discovered I was sitting with a couple of nuns. My they get a lot of special attention on a flight and some of it spills over to their neighbours:-). Nice !!! After ... read more

Well only 2 days to go and I feel like I've eaten blender. I have a very rumbly tummy and I've not had any dodgy food yet!!!! (notice the yet bit in there). Having just been to my development weekend, at a scout camp in East Dulwich, I now feel fully prepared for jungle conditions, leeches, dodgy food and 5 litres of water per day, if only I could get this little lot in my back pack.... read more

After the shocking weather of yesterday we were hoping that today has dawned a bit brighter and upon pulling the curtains we found it has!! The route today is mostly A1 driving but taking in a couple of places and sights that we missed when we travelled over this way from our time in Settle. First though Gretchen had to drive through the Tyne tunnel an experience she would rather avoid as she doesn't do tunnels that well especially when they are under water!!Leading up to the tunnel which is tolled the road becomes a free for all and we only saw that the lane we had chosen didn't give change from the automatic toll collector. So we scambled to find the right change hoping other cars behind us would be patient noting our French number plates ... read more

So here are some pictures. eeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!! I just spent about 45 minutes trying to load some pictures but lost them, so this is all you get. So when I was in Ironbridge (name of the town) which is where the first Iron bridge in the world was built(over the river Severn, cool huh:), back in the 1700's. Anyway after walking about for three hours trying to find a place to stay I ended up sleeping in the park and under the bridge(well next to it). I'm really tired or I would have given you a better story, there is picture of me in the bathroom at about 6 in the morning trying to get warm. Also I got 100 pounds out of the ATM and it gave it to me in 5's... I know this is ... read more

What a portentous beginning... Two things have happened: the days are getting much, much longer, and we both have jobs. The difference this makes cannot be underestimated - we have more energy, we are generally happier and more relaxed about spending money, and we are finally at the point where we no longer look fearfully at the bank account every couple of days. I am playing more football. Mon has found a couple of dance classes to go to. We are planning our summer, which has arrived early. The last two weekends have been spent engaging in sun-related activities, to wit: drinking and driving. Not in that order... A week ago we had a gathering of our London peeps which was really fun, followed by an entire day with leftovers, books and sunshine. And yesterday we ... read more

Angie... Well 6 weeks worth of planning is now complete!! I am now a qualified sorcerers apprentice, Alan Sugar's Apprentices eat your heart out. We can beat the Apprentices hands down! The Norway trip is booked, planned and we are ready for off. Thank you to Karen Marks for putting in a very innovative travel award grant and ensuring that this was comprehensive, cohesive and a well structured business plan by setting the purpose and parameters. This would not have been as easy to initiate without the foundation stones in place. Well done Karen. But the next time she goes off sick in the middle of this she won't be able to come. Well done and thank you to Lyndsey for being the Google queen, and finding everything from a hotel with a hairdryer to a ... read more

Here we go! 4 days and counting! I have just been chatting to Kay on the phone and now I am so excited I'm going to be a pain for the rest of the week. We have been arranging to meet at the airport, Chennai and our options for meeting, considering India is so crazy are 1) Meet at arrivals (not a good idea, apparently!) 2) Meet at the prepaid taxi rank (without getting bundled into one!) 3) Meet at the hotel a half hour ride away Having just checked the exchange rate from GBP into Indian Rupees I now feel like a millionaire. Wobbly tummy at the thought of going on a few planes but I know it will be worth it just to check my 2 youngest rebels are still as crazy as ever! ... read more
