Hello everyone! Well its the night before I leave for Ghana so I thought I'd try my first blog! Naz I'm copying you on this one but I enjoyed reading yours so much that I thought I'd do my own! I'm not sure how I feel at the moment. I don't think I'm really scared or apprehensive but it hasn't really sunk in that I'm leaving tomorrow for a year! (Ok maybe I am a little bit scared!) For those of you who don't know exactly what I'm doing, I'm going to do 4 weeks physiotherapy volunteering in Ghana, 6 weeks in Zanzibar then I'm going to stay with my friend Daniela in South Africa for 10 days before I head to Oz to (hopefully) do some physio work for 5-6 months and traveling after. On ... read more

OK, so it is 3 years since I wrote anything here but that doesn't mean I haven't been up to much. Sam and Kay are in India; and that is where I will be too in about 15 days, 4 hours and 18 minutes... that means I have 14 days, 2 hours and 21 minutes to kack me pants about the flight(s). I have been promised amazing things; adventures to venture into (monkey poo) , things to do (hitch a lift or two?), smells to smell (their sewers aren't that good) and sights to see... Flights are booked, arrangments made and at teatime today I get a call at work to say I have been refused a Visa to visit India!! WHAT??? Great reason though, my signature on my application doesn't match that on my 8 ... read more

Hello!! Only 4 days before I leave! The cakeathon this afternoon was really good, so much cake! Also, its good to know I've fed some poor deprived children something other than mush! It was really good to see everyone, and it's all starting to feel very real and close now. I've still got a few things to sort out, but am feeling fairly quite organised and calm which I'm quite surprised about. Only 2 days left at work which is strange, it seems like I've been there forever. Don't really know what else to put, I hope me doing this entry will make the mysterious world of blogging clearer to some people! Leah x ... read more

Hello Everyone! It's my three week anniversary here today! Yay! It feels like I've been here much longer, and yet the days pass very quickly. School went well. The classes are fun and all of the professors are really nice. My German professor is interested in whether or not the American accent makes it easier to pronounce some words, so she keeps talking to me one on one and asking me questions about pronunciation. I don't think it makes it easier, but some words to flow easier for me. French is, as always, a struggle with pronunciation but I do well with the grammar. My history classes are so much fun. There is a lot of reading for both, but I don't mind. I like reading. I only have classes monday-wednesday, so I enjoy a great ... read more

Hello Everyone! I've finally moved into my accommodation for the next year and it's amazing. The girls I'm living with are all really nice and open. They keep their doors open, or hang out in the kitchen. I think I know all of their names, but I'm not sure. We've been going out to all of the events for Intro Week. School doesn't actually start for another week. I went to the international intro week, and now all the freshers have their first week, to get used to the campus and then school starts on the 29th of Sept. I can't wait for classes to start. I really miss having something to do and feeling collegiate. I have a very international flat. There are four girls from Britian, one from France, one from Canada, one from ... read more

Hello everyone...how are you all....well I am now in Doncaster which is in Yorkshire. I am staying with a friend Margaret but have just come in to town by myself to get some shopping done. She has bad asthma and can't get around easily. Just found this internet cafe by accident. Yesterday we went to a big country estate, Chatsworth House owned by the Duke and Duchess of Derbyshire. Guess what? while I was pushing Margaret round in a wheelchair we ran into the Duchess and I met her! I even managed to get a photo of her as well! The tour was great though as I keep saying....hectic. I just love driving down through the Bremmer Pass in Austria and the Dolomites in northern Italy were amazing. Italy was my favourite country.....Venice was lovely if ... read more

One week to go... I’m sitting here trying to find the words to write before we go to China but the sentences won’t really come - just thoughts and fleeting feelings related to the time leading up to this time. So, here are a few thoughts: Two years ago, Chris and I decided to go travelling extensively and we’ve developed our lives to be ready for this departure. I gave my kids two years notice, we started learning Mandarin, I sold everything worth selling including books that I thought I couldn’t live without, I took on two jobs and latterly, Chris has worked 12 hours a day for 5 days a week + weekends and some evening internet work to save money to go. I’ve rented my house out, sold my car and seen Jess and ... read more

Well, the weather was as unpredictable as ever, but we managed to carry on in true British BBQ fashion. There was the tale of the fly-away Gazebo, the floating fire hazards and the and the water logged roof just waiting for its first victim. We hope everyone had their fill of nosh, and a belly full of beer. Hope to see you all again sometime soon. x ... read more

I'm procrastinating packing, so figured I'd try and explain this . . . Pros - chance to live in Japan for a year!!! How is that not the most amazing thing ever??? - opportunities to learn a new language, engage with a different culture, and all that other stuff that looks good on the CV. - working will enable you to travel for longer elsewhere, as at the very least you could cover the costs of being in Japan, making a potentially expensive part of your itinerary cost-neutral - if you're wanting a year abroad in one place (perhaps you're considering a year in Oz or New Zealand), Japan offers a chance to go somewhere a bit more exotic-seeming, while still earning enough and living comfortably. Cons (or, why they aren't cons really) - Japan is ... read more
