i will always have a 'return to' home in China - a place i can always stay. but here, at last, i'm really home - after almost three years away. I finally moved back just over one month ago. it's not all been easy. it's changed, i've changed, i've changed it. on day one, hanging the old silk lanterns in the lilac tree in my garden made me warm and sad splitting my thoughts between Suzhou and Sheffield. placing the oil painting from the Beijing market on the mantle and the photographs of snap shots from over 600 days in China in frames only made me long for those places again. now, the simple joys are that i talk with pj every day and i'm happy. i listen to jd telling me about his job at ... read more

It was nice ride from the Pennines down to Birmingham along some very good cycle paths and it was possible to get right into the centre of Birmingham using very few roads. I arrived just at 4.30 in good time to meet John off the train at New Street. We made our way to Kings Heath and had a lovely evening with Liz and Chris and James who was also able to join us for a Balti at Dawat. Myself and John enjoyed great hospitality with Liz and Chris before heading off early the next morning. Jim ... read more

12 days to go! With not many days left to go and with the rest of this week of placement and a week of lectures still to go, not forgetting the 6 evenings out planned between now and then, I'm suddenly realising that I better get a move on with getting packed! Apart from couple of little things I think I have everything I need (i've accepted that there's always going to be something i forget!) so now its just the question of fitting everything on my list into my rucksack. Fingers crossed I haven't been over-ambitious with my planning! ... read more

Mappelwell to Ilam 79 miles Total 729 miles. Now to be honest I have to tell you that over the last few days my cycle computer and satnav have been disagreeing. It is a pity as they were in almost total agreement before that. When they disagree it is always by 10 miles with the cycle computer giving the higher mileage. I'll need to look into this when I get back. Anyway today was dominated by high winds which were at their worst at the beginning of the ride because there was little shelter. The wind was mostly against me. However when I had got past Buxton there was almost 15 miles of lovely off road cycle path that was suited to my bike and was mostly downhill. When I arrived in Ilam there was this ... read more

Had a lye in till 9.00 and went down stairs with breakfast being served. This was the day I was to meet an ex colleague who has retired from Devon and is now living near Wetherby in Yorhshire. After some trials and tribulations regarding Pauls health, relocating and rebuilding they now have a very nice place with a lovely garden. Paul is putting his mark on the garden with building a wall for a raised flower bed as a border. However there is no pond yet. Another grandchild is due thanks to Becky and her husband who lives nearby. In the evening we saw Rosie who is looking her usual slim and fit self. She has been very busy recently, which is a bit of a surprise with the current economic climate. If you google acrofanatics ... read more

Where to begin...at the start I suppose. I have wanted to travel around the world for years. Literally. It's a dream and passion of mine to see cultures that shock me, sights that astound me and experience things that I have not yet before. So I thought maybe if I write a blog about my plans (lack of!), maybe it would kick-start me into action (here's hoping!). Why is something I am so passionate about, and really want to do, something I am still talking about? For one I am the most unorganised person ever, so to plan something like this is a nightmare. I struggle to plan a night out... A big dilemma is the round-the-world ticket debate versus the onward travel. I favour the latter for freedom, but money costs, and visa trouble puts ... read more

I returned and you weren’t here – just a note. Not even a note as such. You opened the door to me then left with your dog taking the dog cage too. I noticed the things that you had left and taken. For an hour, I repeatedly looked for you in the same places – in the note, on the sofa, in your room, on the phone screen and in the absolute emptiness and silence. You are not here to hear the new sounds. You left and purposely left no clues. At night, I again looked for you. When you come back, I may already be on the train to London and you may feel relief. Come, stay, leave, go, return, leave again, hui lai. We agree that Sheffield has its charms, especially first thing in ... read more
