We going to live for a very long time………….. Glen Gregory’s vocals resonate around the 02 Academy in Sheffield. 28 years on, they are back on the road in their home town. It was Penthouse & Pavement 18 months ago. It’s the Luxury Gap tour this time, with a bit of Penthouse & Pavement and early Human League thrown in for good measure. Being Boiled indeed - actually that was earlier in the week at The Roundhouse. The centre of Sheffield still sees Heaven 17 a bit overshadowed by the Human League, 32 years after the split with Phil Oakey. The Park Hill flats still tower over the approaches from Junction 33 of the M1. They have a bit more colour these days with some decorative panels on the front, but are now adorned with the ... read more

Well. Got up on Friday morning (morning may be a little optimistic!), looking forward to a drive down through Inverness, Perth, Glasgow and stopping off at or near Hadrian's Wall for the night. The best laid plans... Got up at around 9.30am, made coffee etc., took the dogs for a walk, then remembered to check the oil. It was fine (engine oil, brake fluid, water for windscreen). Then hit the road. Whilst travelling the last 15-20 miles to Perth City, Scotland, we smelt a little 'gas' leak. Got out and checked our gas bottles. All fine. Got back in and drove further. 2 kilometres out of Perth, on a roundabout, started getting smoke coming out from under the van. Travelled a little way (mainly left turns), got into some industrial area, parked outside Dulux Paints and ... read more

Well, today's the day to head out on the road. Or maybe it'll be tomorrow, depending upon how things slot into place. Saturday was pretty hectic, picking up a mattress for the van, getting the final things to fix the panels to the walls of the van, and then heading out at 3pm for a wedding afterparty in Croydon (3 1/2 hours south). Got a call whilst at the hardware store (B&Q - even bigger than Bunnings Warehouses!!) that we were invited to the reception and it started at 3pm. So rushed home, got changed, had me added to the car insurance, and I got to drive us in the Nissan Micra down the M1. Got there at 4pm, luckily the reception hadn't started. Anyway, good food, nice people (Congratulations Angela and Darren - Angela being ... read more

What a day. Awake at 2am, up at 6.30am to take down the slats from inside the van to install the insulation strips. They'll be going up in the next couple of days. Shopped for the wood to install the door and side panels in the van, which will be my project from 6.30am tomorrow. Bought all the fixings, glue and plastic sheeting to wrap the insulation, hiking boots and some shirts, etc. installed some shelving for saucepans and readied a mirror to put up on Saturday. Had some very nice chateu cardboard Sauvignon Blanc from South Africa. Sarah's off with her mum and sister buying fish and chips. I cannot believe I have to order the banana fritters from the Chinese shop next to the fish and chip shop! Making Olive bread. Hopefully the plumber ... read more

Had a great first day. Flew from London to Manchester in the rain, met Sarah at the airport, socially late! Went to a small village and bought some really cheap tops, including a Marks and Spencer light jumper. Went looking at caravans for ideas for doing up the van, went for a drive through the countryside from Manchester to Sheffield, got home and met Zebedee and Honey, Sarah's two dogs, face to face (having Skyped with them previously). Caught up, ate some delicious Indian takeaway. The Lamb Rogan Josh was nice but the mushroom rice and Fish Tikka was the best. The Sauvignon Blanc was light but fruity. Going to bed with all different plans for fitting out the van running through my head. Will be good to actually see it. Probably a very busy day ... read more

Woah, they have added Sheffield? That is amazing! (take it off immediately!! we are not worthy, we have chavs, that discounts us from any international recognition!) On the 11th of October I'm setting off on my journey to Thailand, ready for the nifty hop over to Cambodia. To fly directly to Cambodia is stupid money, but to go to Thailand first, hop, skip, flight over.... easy peasy (or is it... watch this space). I am going alone. Just me and my baggage. I am a bit concerned about the physical implications due to the pain (RSD etc) but, the challenge is enourmous and I am, well, i am trying to make myself realise, not only can I do this, I can enjoy it too. I'm all sorted now, no accommodation booked yet, but that is part ... read more
