Arriving in this region to explore Hadrian's wall took several hours from Las Vegas. First flight on American Airlines from LAS to PHI (Philadelphia airport), then another AA flight to MAN (Manchester). Interesting flight numbers. 437 LAS to PHI and 734 PHI to MAN. 30 minutes delay was made up enroute. Find I was upgraded for next leg which meant admiral club access for my 4+ hour layover. First photo leaving Las Vegas but says welcome. Second is guacamole to order at PHI. The flight from Philadelphia to Manchester was delayed almost an hour in departing. Enjoyed the fully reclining business class seat. Allowed for about 4 hours of good rest during the flight. After a good dinner and good breakfast on the flight we approached Manchester and it was impressive to see the brilliant greens ... read more

Last hiking day of St. Cuthbert's Way, across the mudflats at lowtide to the isle of Lindisfarne. The trek across the sands took 2 and 1/2 hours. Rose walked briefly until water got in her wellies (boots). Becky, Ben, and Jan ended up bare foot in the mud at the end. And to think the causeway was not here until the 1950's, and even with a population of up to 500 on this island! So there are pictures of horse and buggies crossing the sands and picking people up from the 2 platforms that are situated in the middle of the path. We woke up this morning to church bells, 10 minutes before 8am. I realized that was announcing a church service, so i got dressed and went to a lovely service of Holy Communion in ... read more

Finally some pictures to share of ST. Cuthbert's Way. We had a wonderfully relaxing day of rest in Beal, England at a B and B with a wonderful garden and mini playground for Rose. So we got up late and simply enjoyed "hanging out" together in the sunny/cloudy day. Called a taxi to take us to a grocery store and take out Indian Restaurant 30 minutes away, but he never showed up!!!! So plan B went into action, since we are on a farm away from any city. We got on our rain gear ans walked a over a mile to the closest Pub = a wonderful excercise in listening to each other, and figuring out what would work best at the time. So enjoy the pictures from St. Cuthbert's Way. We walk the 3 miles ... read more

Gracious, it's been awhile since you last heard from me Alas, the internet connections have been real poor in recent B and B's, often not available in our rooms. We have been hiking St. Cuthbert's Way for 5 days, from 6 - 10 miles each day and staying in a new B and B each nights. Quite a challenge for Jeremy and Jan who have to carry luggage for a 4 yr old and 6 month old! Ar least we have a taxi service who takes our major luggage to each B and B where it is waiting for our arrival after 5 - 7 hours of hiking. The infant, Dylan, is carried. Rose, the 4 yr old walks about 2 miles and is carried the rest of the way, mostly in a backpack by Uncle ... read more

Another Brick in the Wall. It was scheduled to be a big sporting weekend in England. The British Grand Prix was taking place at Silverstone. Lewis Hamilton would be the hot favourite, given his Mercedes car seems just about unbeatable these days. Tennis was the order of the day at Wimbledon. The distraction of Andy Murray, the doubles player, was over but the usual pecking order looked likely in the Mens and Womens Singles Finals. The buzz was probably all about cricket. England had coped with the pressure of being hosts and dismantled Australia in the semifinals, leaving the unlikely New Zealand team as potential party poopers in the Lords Final on Sunday. Sky TV had even relented and allowed Channel 4 to simultaneously show the game on a free to air channel. Football was back though. Albeit, mainly in the ... read more

I stand on foreshore and survey South Beach. Miami, you ask? A quick glance does not reveal any art deco splendour - or at least none that can see. I have left the Other Half behind today, which is possibly just as well because at this point she would be pointing out that in not much more travel time we could have nearly reached Florida. I am in South Beach, Blyth. A lesser known tourist hot spot on the travel circuit and one not known to usually boast tropical temperatures. I was exploiting the value of the North East Explorer bus ticket once again. A bit of luck had seen me in Newcastle in a shade over 2 hours and I now headed along the Coast Road towards Whitley Bay. The old Wills Tobacco Factory stands ... read more

There has been a nice spot of annual leave this week although I have had a bit of a running quandary. The recent tetchy calf has been healing nicely and I have been itching to do another feature run but was a bit worried about doing too much too soon. Fortunately, I had an excellent shorter activity on the back burner which was The Lowry Trail in Berwick Upon Tweed. This was something that I had been planning with trail biker and excellent East Lothian blogger Coastrider. I sent Bruce a quick message and we agreed that separate accounts may be more interesting. I am a big Lowry fan and have visited the gallery in Salford on a couple of occasions. It did seem fitting to see the pictures and locations of where the great man ... read more

Boy do we have great news for you. A Roman ruin! Yep, HP and Bird briefly left Scotland for the north of England to survey Hadrian's handiwork. We also took in a Roman fort along the wall. Not much left of the fort, but we must recall the Romans abandoned poor England to the barbarians (yeah the folks who were our great...grandparents). These barbarians were a good deal less civilized than the folks who took over Roman provinces on the continent, thus they preserved little. As for the fort, largely only the foundation remains, but we can see portions of the 73 mile long wall rather well, and in fact took a little stroll on it. Yes, of course, there was snow about, but wind was absent and temp above freezing. No problem after Iceland. After ... read more
