Arriving in this region to explore Hadrian's wall took several hours from Las Vegas.
First flight on American Airlines from LAS to PHI (Philadelphia airport), then another AA flight to MAN (Manchester). Interesting flight numbers. 437 LAS to PHI and 734 PHI to MAN. 30 minutes delay was made up enroute. Find I was upgraded for next leg which meant admiral club access for my 4+ hour layover. First photo leaving Las Vegas but says welcome. Second is guacamole to order at PHI.
The flight from Philadelphia to Manchester was delayed almost an hour in departing. Enjoyed the fully reclining business class seat. Allowed for about 4 hours of good rest during the flight. After a good dinner and good breakfast on the flight we approached Manchester and it was impressive to see the brilliant greens of the grass and the trees as we flew over on our approach.
The signage leaving the airport to the train station indicated it was about a 10-minute walk. It was fairly easy to carry the two bags the backpack and make the walk to the train station.
From MAN the train to Hexham has many choices. Using the rome2rio app
I had to determine the correct train and the way to use my Railcard to obtain the savings on the fare. This card cost 30 GBP (BRITISH POUNDS) But should save 20% on fares. My 54 fare was reduced to 28. Almost paid for card already.
I have included some photos that indicate the train arrivals and departures at Manchester and the signage marking the way to the train station. My first train from Manchester to Carlisle was late but I still had about eight minutes to make my connecting train from Carlisle to Hexham. Being somewhat sleep-deprived, it was quite difficult staying awake on the train. I almost missed getting off at my stop at Hexham as the train stops for only about 2 minutes.
In Hexham I followed Google maps to find a store where I might find distilled water. After several stops I determined that no one carries distilled water in this part of England. So I trundled my bags the 20 + minute walk to the Burncrest B&B. I had send an email to the proprietress, Margaret Ellery, who greeted me at the door. This is a very nicely laid out B&B. The rooms
with individual but separate bathrooms are on the second floor and it's right on the main Street through town making an easy walk in and out of the town of Hexham.
The town of Hexham was founded around Wilfred's church, which was built around 673. Subsequently a very large Abbey was built around the 11th century and has large park and grounds. They are quite beautiful and the inside has some beautiful stained glass windows. The Abbey was being used for a production, I don't know if it was a concert or a play the evening when I arrived to visit. I have attached a few photos of the Abbey signage and the grounds.
Tomorrow off to explore Hadrian's wall.
