Missed my ale pie last night. I know sad but true. My fault though as I noted that the pie came from a larger pie and I really wanted an individual one as I maintain that slices reheated go a little hard and dry around the edges. So the search goes on. Long ago have I given up on finding rabbit in any form so my holy grail is now a good ale pie (well not really. I haven't completely given up but I'm talking myself into it!). But the own brewed ales are very good and the pub itself is very good. As well as canine brews it is dog friendly and dogs are everywhere. There were 6 in just one of the areas here! We travelled to the north of the Lakes District near ... read more

I received an early morning email from British Airways on Monday the 29th telling me our flight to England had been cancelled until further notice- there had been some power difficulties with BA at Heathrow that had affected travellers for over three days. We now needed an extra night's accommodation and luckily for us a hotel around the corner had a room. John and I meandered around Milan for the day and took off for England Tuesday afternoon. It was so good to finally arrive in Whitley Bay to the cheery faces of cousin Peter and Linda. We had a fabulous five days with them, visiting Thrum Mill in Rothbury, which appeared on an episode of Restoration Man on Channel 2 and we just had to see it! and the beautiful home of Lord Armstrong, Cragside, ... read more

5/18 - 7 miles Our holiday began with our overnight flight to first Paris and then Newcastle, UK via Air France. We were so pleased when boarding just how wide and comfortable the seats were. The plane was almost double insulated which made it so quiet, eliminating almost all air noise. Great right? Actually not so much! No air noise meant you could hear everything from a passenger perspective, and for an overnight flight we had some noisy neighbors! It almost felt like half of the plane stayed awake the entire night with lights on, etc. Matt was the only one who favored well as Jen didn't sleep one wink, and I feel like maybe I got a cumulative 1.5-2 hours. So we arrived in Paris a bit weary eyed for our short layover but managed ... read more

So we left the swarming city of London behind in favour of long drives in a northerly direction. Wednesday 12th we packed up and headed to Stratford Upon Avon with the intention of seeing inside Shakespeare's birthplace, Anne Hathaways Cottage and any other Shakespearean experiences we could find. Instead we had brunch inside the coolest steampunk type cafe called the Boston Tea Party (a bacon bap and the first of what I am certain will be many Croque Monsier's), and we ended up waylaid inside an incredibly cool Wizard/magic shop called Magic Alley. Not just a shop but a Wizards museum - 3 floors - bottom floor sells books, wands, crystals, spells, and includes a coffee shop at the back, floor 2 and 3 are the museum , with magic numbers. stories, costumes and a puzzle ... read more

And I thought that the trek to Steel Rigg was bad, not a patch on today! I was up early, I had slept fairly well and was ready when the owner brought my breakfast over. I had a Full English here, too. It was really good and I scoffed the lot. It set me up nicely for the day's long walk ahead. Due to the limited, cheap accommodation on offer, I would be walking 20+ miles today. I had tried to book a hostel months ago in Heddon-on-the-Wall, but it was full. The other places were too expensive or further out. Everybody seemed to be having trouble finding somewhere to stay there, as I had talked to a few others about it. Luckily, I would be able to head home and spend the evening in my ... read more

I got up around 7:30. When I drew back the curtains, I got a surprise, it was very foggy out there. I was wondering if it would even be possible to walk as I wouldn't be able to see a thing. However as time progress the fog receded. It did, however, still look cold and miserable. Ah, the British weather so unpredictable, especially after yesterday was so nice and warm. I pottered around getting ready, drinking coffee, packing my bag and watching TV, until it was time for me to go down to breakfast. When I had checked in the night before, I had selected what type of breakfast I wanted and it what time I wanted it. Of course, I had opted for the full Northumbrian and I helped myself to juice, coffee and toast, ... read more

What a long day! I got up early around 7 am. I had slept really well, only waking a couple of times in the early morning. It had rained again during the night, but was clear when I got up. The bacon butty I had ordered arrived promptly at 8 am. I quickly devoured its deliciousness, and went over to the farmhouse to pay my £2.50 for it. I got to meet the couple that own the farm, very friendly, nice people. Since I had a long day of hiking ahead of me, I didn't hang around and was on my way by 8:15. I got back on the trail and followed the path through fields for half a mile until I reached the village of Walton proper. I got a little lost here as I ... read more

The strange history of Berwick-upon-Tweed The main purpose with our visit in England on this trip was to hike the Hadrian's Wall Path. After finishing that we had a few days over and here we are going to write a little about how we spent those. . We didn't have any plans for the remaining days when we arrived in England. We did actually try to go to Scotland but had to abandon that idea when we didn't find any accommodation. When we sat down to make plans for the last days Ake remembered that he many years ago read a story about how a town in northern England ended up being in war with Russia for over 100 years. The town is called Berwick-upon-Tweed and here comes the story. Berwick-upon-Tweed lies near the b... read more

Notes from a hiking vacation in Northern England Last summer we hiked from the east coast to the west coast in England. This is a trip we for several years have been thinking of doing. We will soon begin to tell our story from the trail. But first we have a message to potential hikers. If you are planning on hiking all or parts of the Hadrian's Wall Path yourself we have for your benefit in the end of this blog entry added some travel information. You might learn one or two useful things there. Almost 2,000 years ago the Romans ruled much of Europe. The Roman Empire had its northern borders in what today is northern Germany and northern England. In the year 122 CE the Roman emperor Hadrian decided to mark the northern boundary ... read more

Our original purpose of stopping in Blyth on the Northumberland coast was to spend the day visiting the offshore islands of Farne to see the puffins that spend time there over the summer season. However when we made enquiry by email regarding the short boat trip we learnt that the puffins leave the islands at the end of July and head off to where they spend the winter. We had left our timing too late as of course it is now early August. So we changed tact and decided that a short drive to Alnwick the location of the castle owned by the Percy family for over 650 years and used in the Harry Potter movies and also the last programme of Downton Abbey would be a good replacement for our sightseeing. This is the first ... read more
