Asenby,, Thirsk. We are so very fortunate to have great friends around the world including Tony and Jacqui. They picked us up in Glasgow and drove us to their beautiful home and are guests for the next few days. Arriving in Asenby we unloaded and went to the local pub, Angels, for a pint and a wine. A little walk both ways was an excellent way to stretch the legs after an afternoon drive. We travelled through beautiful country side with their stone fences, sheep and Holstein cattle decorating the green rolling hills with scattered beautiful older stone homes scattered throughout. A fine mist graced the drive opening up later to some sun for our walk. We were treated to excellent salmon from Iceland smoked in Scotland with beautiful trimmings and wine. Cheers!!... read more

Seven hours walking the Yorkshire dales on the hottest day of the year. Equipped with my jumper and coat in my trusty pack I set off without my walking partner. Julie’s ankle is rather ugly so she gave herself the day off. This means she travels with the luggage and takes a somewhat circuitous route but still beats me to our Hawes BnB by several hours. So if you want to know what the luggage transfer vehicle is like you’ll have to contact my twisted sister. Without her pedometer the exact number of steps is a mystery but again it must be close to 38000 as the distance was 23 km. Relatively easy walking on very clearly defined tracks made for a faster rate than we have maintained on any other day. That’s a reflection on ... read more
It’s actually Robbie’s track. No I couldn’t.
Julie likes sign signs. So here we go.

We’re in Horton in Ribblesdale. Not exactly the centre of the known universe but a lovely spot, by that I mean the pubs good and our BnB is good. Here I can stand up at least which is something I could not say last night. I’m typing off line and will simply dump when I can. Very comfy here but that may reflect the 3 pints I’ve had. Our BnB mum came and collected us from the pub after we’d eaten pretty well and had a good start with a couple of ciders. Again the ciders are very generic and really only so so but we all make sacrifices. But after showering and making ourselves sort of human we treated ourselves to a cheese platter and a beer. Very nice way to see in the evening ... read more

1. Lee’s socks, well not Lee’s socks because they’re my socks, but socks that Lee knits are better than even I thought. Two or three pairs will get me through the worst of conditions. My boots were so bad at one stage I dunked them in a cow drinking trough just to get mud off them. 2. Jake and Marie’s map wallet, well not their map wallet because it’s mine, but a map wallet that they gave me has served me really well. It has survived several big walks and is still waterproof and still with me everywhere and every time I walk. It is actually waterproof. 3. I should write a guide book. Then there would be no phrases like ‘right at the top of the incline turn left’, ‘taking the right turn will lead ... read more

Back on the coach we bid a fond adieu to Scotland and cross over into England at Northumberland. There was an amazing view of the North Sea as we crossed back into England. The sun was shining and the warmth of the day was upon us. Quite the welcome back. We are heading today to York, our last stop before returning to London. Our first stop the town of Alnwick. It means town on the clear river. We examined the outside of the castle from the 11th century. It is an outstanding example of a Norman castle. It was updated by Queen Victoria and the outside was used in the movie as a back drop in Harry Potter and in the TV show, Downton Abbey. A quick photo stop, and on to the center of town ... read more

The car was pointing north. As usual. We turned off the A1 on to the A168 and "home". It is a familiar stretch. I have often switched radio stations by this point to BBC Radio Tees. There is a sense of familiarity to the news and the accents delivering it. "If you're talking about it. We're talking about it". However, tonight I had left it tuned into a national station. Directly on cue as I make the turn off, a seasonal tune plays. We had been "top to toe in tailbacks' for most of the journey, but we are now almost on the "freeway'. Driving home for Christmas with a thousand memories. There are other Christmas records, but this one is the one that instantly gets anybody who hails from the hinterland of Teesside all nostalgic. ... read more

Another travel tool: searching for “self-catering” cottages (similar to VRBO) led me to this delightful little rental in the charming village of Pateley Bridge. It has an award winning High Street, full of shops and tea rooms, and is nestled in a river valley with cut-velvet green draped over the surrounding hills. Of all of the places I’ve rambled on this trip, Wales and Yorkshire are standouts! Determined not to drive any more (I don’t get to see the scenery when I’m white-knuckling around every turn), I’m now either in transit or on foot. That’s all well and good, but in this burg, there‘s only one regular bus in and out, and it makes just seven trips per day, to/from Harrogate (which is 14 miles away, but because there are FIFTY-EIGHT potential stops, the trip takes ... read more

I have an observation from a comment from yesterday that I thought some more of you might be interested in: “I suspect we will see several Cathedrals in London and I am looking forward to it. So far, they have all been spectacular in their own ways. York Minster is different from any of the others we have seen because of the stone it is built in. I think our bus guide said it was Yorkshire stone but wouldn’t swear to that. At any rate, the color of the stones is a light, creamy color—not stained at all which, to me, makes it look like that huge edifice could almost float up into the air. It really is an amazing building.” Goathland train station, where Harry Potter was filmed, was our first stop today. We rode ... read more

Oh, my, the things that we have SEEN! I’m going to have to be diligent about posting, just to keep up with the flow of photos. Our first night on the road was in York, where we managed to score a garret room (no lift) at a pretty, central hotel, in the midst of York’s Air Balloon Fest (a surprise to us). Unfortunately, the event made the traffic “bedlam” - it took an HOUR to travel 800 feet! I parked on “double yellow lines” overnight, so had to rise before dawn to move the car to a legal spot - but I was going out anyway, to watch the balloon launch. Upon our arrival, we took a twilight stroll into the old city and explored The Shambles (preserved medieval streets). We were astonished at the size ... read more

Mark had his lazy day so stayed at Station House watching TV and reading. The rest of us headed off to Malham Cove, driving over the narrow, windy roads on the high empty moors skirting the southern slopes of Scosthrop High Moor. At the Visitor Centre we were recommended a 5 mile walk to Malham Cove and Gordale Scar. The clouds had cleared and we had lovely clear skies for the rest of the walk. As a group of young, noisy, school children set off towards Gordale scar we decided to do the walk in reverse. Will was glad about this as he preferred going up the reported 663 steps rather than down them. (Although when we got there Dad only counted 370 steps!) The path took us along the pretty Malham Beck to where it ... read more
