The End. That’s it - all done. Woke up this morning and had the strange feeling of not having to walk anywhere today. Both happy and sad at the same time. Well happy should really be relief - can now give the feet a bit of a rest. The rest of the body held up reasonable well, but could also do with some rest I guess. Sad for a number of reasons. Firstly, we have had the most amazing time exploring the North of England and some of the sights we’ve seen and the vistas we’ve been privileged to experience have been epic. Secondly, a quite bizarrely, I think we’ll miss the walking - time to clear the head and mentally relax for some of the day has been great. But most of all I’ll be ... read more

The Final Push. Up nice and early for the last days walking. A bit of reparation on the feet (which we’re in remarkably good order all things considered) and a light breakfast (plan was to stop at Grosmont to top up) and we were on our way before 8.00am for the final 20 miles or so. Past the station and Beggars Bridge, we were soon into Egton Bridge, a beautiful little village - so beautiful in fact that they filmed Heartbeat there. Missed a turnoff by the Manor House so added a bit extra to our journey (again). Then through the Fords (checked on Ellis height), before hitting Bernard’s Road - toll road which would have cost us 4d if we’d had a horse and two wheels. Arrived into Grosmont, which has an cool sign made ... read more

Another very long day. Left the Blue Bell Inn after a hearty breakfast at 8.30, with a sign in the pub reminding us that we still had 50.5 miles to go. A big walk today with not only 21 miles (according to the guidebook), but also a combined ascent of over 1,000m with plenty of ups and downs to be expected. A good start already when the Sherpavan man who takes our luggage told us to take it easy with the running over the moors as there’s plenty of tough tracks going up. Yes - he actually mistook us for Fell Runners (not sure if he was blind or just taking the p***); I, of course assured him that we would not be running a single step of the way! So, off past a stately home ... read more

More Moors. Short day today - only around 10 miles, which should mean less than 4 hours walking. Easy, right? Wrong….. Woke up to rain and mist which had settled over the Lion Inn. No rush in starting though, so we gave it some time to clear with a later breakfast and some extra lie-down time. Off we set at just before 10.30 with the mist still lurking, but with winds that would clear it given a bit of time. Road walk to start the day and a meet with Fat Betty (a set of stones looking like a fat lady I guess). It’s tradition to swap some food item you have with an offering from the Fat one. It seemed that the only thing on offer when getting close to Betty was a dead sheep ... read more

Let’s get back in the game… What a lovely time in Richmond! Two whole days off in an amazing farm house (Galloways House at Tunstall Road Farm). So what to do with ourselves? We had no idea until Mandy and Skyla pointed it out to us, that what we really needed to do was head back into Richmond and walk with them around every single ladies clothing shop - how could we have missed that? Just over 15,000 steps on our first day off!! The highlight of the day though was Ellis going for a swim in the Swale. Pretty sure it was to rejuvenate his muscles, just like elite athletes who have an ice bath. He enjoyed himself, even though he was the only person mad enough to go in to the cold water. Lovely ... read more

The shortest day. Woke up with a spring in our step today - only 10.5 miles today! A breeze. Porridge for Ellis and a full English for me and then we hit the road, leaving Reeth to continue our journey east. Crossed the bridge out of Reeth and was confused as to what is so valuable in the town that they need a super armoured police vehicle guarding the town - and I mean one with proper armour and big guns! This is Sichi Runak‘s constituency so maybe it’s to protect him from all his local fan club….. Saw some grouse, sheep and cows across the North Yorkshire Dales as we ambled across those rolling dales. Most run from us humans, so that’s okay; but one stubborn cow that was directly on our path refused to ... read more

The Watershed. Up and out from Kirkby Stephen Hostel at 9.00am after meeting Denise, her family and Milly (their dog). we both had a hug with Denise and then set off. Today was the day we passed the halfway stage - up and over the Pennines. We had a choice today; either the low route or the climb to Nine Standards Rigg. I let Ellis choose - I think he might actually be enjoying himself as he picked the higher route to see the Nine Standards. It was worth it - not something you see every day, but it was bitter cold at the top with chilling winds blowing across us, so we didn’t rest for long. Off now across the moors at the top of the Pennines and the peat bogs. The guidebook warned of ... read more

The low route. So we started our day with a breakfast of Yorkshire crumpets and bacon. Not so sure what was supposed to be special about those crumpets - nothing to write home about, I think they just put egg over them and deep fry them. We shall not be going back for those again (although of course, we pretended they were really nice). Had a bag malfunction when the zip on my bag bust open and was unfixable. Managed to cram everything in Ellis bag and wrote a begging letter to the luggage transport company who were previously very strict about the max 20kg rule that we were now going to break. Then off on our way. Two miles again before wee back on the Coast to Coast track - although this detour did take ... read more
