In a week that brought us an invasion of Old Trafford by the disgruntled Manchester United fan base, there was an invasion of sorts at New Marske too. There was nothing to complain about here. There was no protest over club ownership. In fact, the support wasn't really here at all. They were all just out for a socially distanced Bank Holiday weekend drink in an outdoor beer garden. There just happened to be football match nearby and in local terms, the North Riding Football Association Saturday Challenge Cup quarter final is as big as they get. Who needs a European Super League? It was another example of rules for one and rules for others. It was deemed okay for a capacity 980 crowd to gathers indoors at the Crucible in Sheffield for the World Championships ... read more

Today I headed out in the chilly sunshine, meandering towards the North Yorkshire moors again, this time via the caravan route, which promised to be a bit more sedate than the 25% Sutton Bank. I had learned my lesson on day 1 that sausages for brekkie and crazy steep climbs have disastrous consequences for my digestive system. I looped around the foothills to Kirkbymoorside, where I took a nice quiet climb up through Hotton-Le-Hole, clearly named as such to give an air of French sophistication. It was actually quite a quaint picturesque village so to label it “the hole” would seem a little harsh. After a cattle grid the route reached the open moorland. There was a bit more gentle climbing before the road plateaued as it then followed the ridge line pretty much all the ... read more

Day 1 It being the year of the staycation, and having a “use it or loose it” day of vacation to use by the end of September, I decided to head up to Yorkshire to check out the cycling oop tha’. The logistics couldn’t be easier, with the train from London taking barely more than two hours up to Thirsk, which is just a few miles from the North Yorkshire Moors, and about 20 miles from the Yorkshire Dales. Well fuelled on a hearty brekkie of porridge, sausage and eggs and toast I headed out with only a vague route plan in mind: head for the hills and take it from there... After a 20mins preamble I was straight into the Boltby Bank, one of the top 100 Uk climbs. Definitely a bit too soon after ... read more

The X4 rolled up on time. It had been 6 months since I had last been on public transport. The bus was showing the hallmarks of COVID. Social distancing signs. Warning tape across some seats. Advisory signs to indicate a reduced capacity - 21 seated only, as opposed to 49 plus standing. The latter sign would prove unfortunate later in the day. East Cleveland was largely slumbering this morning. Passengers were few and far between at this early hour. A few were heading down to their jobs in Whitby - others were possibly heading home! I passed through Carlin How. The huge steel plant on the cliffs in a most unlikely setting is a reminder of the iron ore heritage in the area. The edge of Skinningrove was displaying a sign advertising a new holiday park ... read more

Dear All In my last blog entry, I was just about to leave Newcastle, after four full days of wonderful explorations around there. I was bound on the Wednesday morning for my next destination: the North York Moors National Park. I was excited. I planned to do my journey there in two stages, to be able to stop off in Middlesbrough along the way, and explore this little known northern industrial city for a couple of hours, before taking another train deep into the North York Moors on the horizon. My first train thus took me from Newcastle 40 miles to the south-east to the city of Middlesbrough. I was hoping upon arrival at the train station to find a left-luggage facility somewhere, to not only leave my backpack which was getting heavier with souvenirs, but ... read more

Oh to be in England now. We travelled from Asenby to Whitby on the North Sea Coast through all the little and Mid sized picturesque towns. The route reminds us of all the English poems and literature we read mostly through grade school and a few novels after. The thatched roofs and pastures of sheep ( Terri’s friends, cotton balls. Arriving in Whitby in low tide we saw many boats settled on mud sea floor. In the distance we could see our destination of the once glorious Whitby Abbey. We walked through the narrow streets with shops on either side, Noting along the way the Lucky Duck ship and the Black Horse pub both future stops after the trek to the Abbey. St. Hilda would have been overjoyed with the church and Abbey before Good? King ... read more

A late morning and went on a beauty hike with beautiful friends at Kilburn WhiteHorse , a park on Sutton Bank in Yorkshire. It was a gentle walk except a 152 steps down to the first valley and a steep climb back up to the top of the hill. At the hill top people have carved out the hill bush making a white horse on the hillside limestone rock. Within the park were glider aircraft which soared well above us in the blue sky. Below we could see the decorative English landscape with the harvest well underway and beautiful working fields. We had a nice drive back to the City of York where we had a delicious meal followed by a “York Ghost Walk”. The York Ghost adventure was excellent giving us history and haunted sites ... read more

Fountains Abbey is a remarkable ruin dating back to its beginning in 1132. It’s unfortunate Henry the eighth in the early 16th century destroyed a lot of these beautiful buildings. Walking through this church and Abbey ruins gives you a feel for its majestic appearances and influence during the height of existence. Attached to Fountains Abbey are the Studley Royal Gardens from the 1800’s in Versailles style. We had an excellent day walking around them with our friends. We enjoyed a nice lunch at the Boars Head followed by a shared walk around Ripley Castle but as they were having a wedding we were not able to see the inside. The sharing of a walk around in great conversations was very nice. The evening of Tapas followed by drums and music ?... read more

31 August 2019, Saturday Transition from the coast to coast to the Thames Path walk. Day 15 of travel. I left Chuck, Ruth Ann and Jim at the Keld Lodge about 8 30 in the morning and was given a ride by Chris, the coast to coast Packhorse van driver, to Richmond. The three of them then set off on the coast to coast walk to the town of Reeth. About 4 weeks ago a flash flood came roaring down one of the roads from the mountains and nearly wiped out the community of Reeth along the Swale River. Their annual festival was held last weekend. The community rallied to clear the debris from the fairgrounds and the festival went on as scheduled. But at the lowest end of the valley along the Swale River you ... read more

The day was spent walking around York, the old city. We walked the Roman wall, seen Clifford’s Tower, York Ministry,The Shambles and Jorvik Viking Centre. As well we did a river cruise picturing in our minds the Viking ships coming down the Ouse River. The evening hours spent in interesting conversations and a beautiful dinner with Jacqui and Tony. Another beautiful interesting day. ... read more
