We left beautiful Newstead Abbey Monday morning and headed north to Whitby, with a planned stop in York. I had visited both of these areas when I was younger visiting our family one summer. My sister wanted to see both places and my dad loves beach towns. So we were looking forward to our first tourist activity. It was a cold and windy day, but at least the sun was out! The weather was slowly improving. We drove through some nice little villages until we wound up in a city parking lot on the south side of the city. Our first stop was Clifford's Tower, where we picked up our English Heritage passes. These were worth it, especially for me and my sister (my parents were not overly tourist site ambitious). It is a 9-day oversea ... read more

I usually like the idea of Scarborough more than the reality. As I watched the rain lash down on the front of the bus, I suspected today was no exception. It was Easter Saturday and the weather should have turned by now. Instead the clocks might have changed for summer, but nobody had told the man in charge of global temperatures. The rain turned to sleet between Whitby and Cloughton and snow was forecast for Bank Holiday Monday. The start of the school holidays had prompted my decision to buy an All Day bus ticket. £8 and you can catch any Arrivabus in the North East. The area between Newcastle and Scarborough was now within my reach, although the timetables will force you to spend literally all day on the bus to achieve that distance. The ... read more

So here it was the final day of walking! It seemed like another lifetime ago that we had first met our treking group and guides in St Bees, it even seemed like years ago that we had sung happy birthday to Judy; now it was with mixed emotions I prepared myself for the final day of our Coast to Coast trek. I was feeling sad because soon these new friends I had made would all be going their separate ways, busy with their own lives and careers and I would be going back to my ‘normal’ life too; I didn’t want this experience to end, not from the social point of view at least although if I ever see another hill I’m likely to go into shock! By now Pete and I had a great routine ... read more

Last night I had stayed and eaten at my favourite pub in the entire country and possibly the world, this had been a real ‘look forward to’ moment for me; I just hoped the pub was still as great as I remembered as I had gone on about it to the rest of our group on more than 1 occasion!! Luckily as soon as we arrived and had settled in I realised the pub was just as great as I remembered luckily the rest of my group especially the American contingent seemed to agree with me. The portion sizes were still huge though so quite a bit of food was left over at our evening meal, even Pete was turning down food and that hardly ever happens!! The next day we stepped outside to be presented ... read more

By the time I staggered into our accommodation last night which was the Buck Inn at Chop I was totally done! The last few miles yesterday had really sapped me and I wanted a hot drink and to sit down, luckily the pub we were staying at was really good and were waiting to take our wet boots and gear off us. My heel which was heavily blistered had really been hurting at the end of yesterday's walk and I was looking forward to Pete sorting them out so I could relax, the evening meal was fantastic but shortly after I went straight to bed......our guides having told us that breakfast would be at the earlier time if 0700hrs instead of 0800hrs today!! Luckily later on we had a knock on the door to say breakfast ... read more

Waking up today I was discouraged slightly by the chance of wet weather I guess it had to happen eventually as we had so far been very lucky in recent days with bright sunshine and it being quite hot. We started with very windy conditions but dry at least, we had a walk up to the accommodation where 2 of the Devon girls had stayed which was a sharp uphill climb! From there it was again sharp uphill which saw me struggling from the off, I was as usual last in the group and falling further and further back. Once home if I come across another hill in my entire life it will be far too soon! Plodding on the ascent just seemed to get steeper and steeper and I got slower and slower, it's pleasantly ... read more

Waking up today I was fighting with a blister on my heel and my mood had been somewhat darkened by the fact that Pete and I were in a twin room, but hey we are trekking across the UK so these little nuances are going to happen occasionally. We had about 9 more miles today of farmland which also put Pete in a dark mood as he sees it as boring and dull, mainly because he so loves the dramatic scenery of the Lake District and the expanse of the Yorkshire Dales alongside the fact that where he comes from in Somerset is basically the same landscape as our last two days walking. He had been sulking for 2 days solid so far and I felt like ramming 1 of Jess’s sticks up his arse if ... read more

Well it has to be said that the town of Richmond was a pure delight, we visited an excellent chocolatiers called Mocha had a walk around the town then retired to the pub we were staying in for an afternoon of relaxed drinking and chit chat. A guy Pete had climbed Kilimanjaro with called Ken Topham had driven up from Saddleworth to have a catch up with the hubster, he seemed like a nice guy with a lot of patience; possibly how he managed to survive sharing a tent with Pete for so long!! Waking up the next day I was starting to feel really good and ready for the hike ahead, we had 14.5 miles to cover across flat and downhill farmland which was again another dramatic change from the rolling hills and dry stone ... read more

The accommodation the previous night had been a bit ropey dogs were certainly more welcome than their human counterparts which was great for Jess and Zulu, not so much for the rest of our group! The staff were a little abrupt and made a mess of our evening meal also I don't think our mattress had been changed since the Viking hoards had passed through some years before! It was with weary legs, a tired mind but a great 'let's be avin it' spirit that I set off on this slightly kinder 10.5 mile walk, the weather was great at least in fact it was decidedly hot! The sun was strong and a steep climb soon presented itself in front of the group, at least the terrain was kind being of solid track and flat stones ... read more

We had stayed at a fantastic place the previous day called Butt House in Keld as such I was well refreshed for the day ahead. Sadly shortly after starting off I was feeling quite ill and had a poorly tummy for ‘womens’ reasons! I was loving the walking through rolling farmers fields and alongside a beautiful river, due to the scheduled poor weather we had taken the low route. I was struggling not because of the walking which was great and easier than what had gone previously, but my stomach was not playing ball. The weather had once again been kind to us with it being dry and occassionally warm, leaving the beautiful village of Keld we were heading for Reeth about 11 miles away. I quickly decided that I would have to bail at the ... read more
