A spectacular bright full moon (Worm moon because bettle larvae begin to emerge from the thawing barks) motivated me to explore the universe. I booked myself for an event in the dark sky reserve of Keld village in Yorkshire dales. Time to put on my boots and go on a nature discovery. I took National express overnight bus from London Victoria to Darlington. That evening, watched Agatha Christie's play- Witness by the Prosecution in London County Hall. A full house and the play was a courtroom with some excellent acting. Having read too many mysteries, I guessed the twist and so it was not that much fun. Comfortable in overnight bus? Did better in my return journey with a quieter seat at the back, my jumper for a pillow, slept across the seats and slept on ... read more

Driving home for Christmas. I was beginning to think we were starting to put this whole pandemic business behind us and I could stop mentioning the C word. Alas, here we go again or more to the point - here we don't go again! When we can book any trip with confidence, all of a sudden looks further away from us than ever. We are back to waiting on the word of TFB, as to whether further restrictions will be foisted upon us. The other Home Nations went early, but TFB holds the purse strings and has one eye on the knives in the back. He eventually chose to maintain the status quo. Plan B onwards and upwards. The situation seems to be getting closer to home as well. The Man in the Middle has tested ... read more

Railways have been much in discussion in the last few weeks. TFB was due to announce the fate of his much vaunted HS2 project. The high speed rail link was part of his plans to "level up" the north and the south of England. The red wall gang waited patiently for the confirmed delivery of the election "promise". It turned out it wasn't really a promise after all. The decision was to bring disappointment to many and anger for others. The northern leg to link to Leeds had been scrapped. The upgrade to connect the Leeds - Bradford - Manchester had similarly been shelved. It is ironic then that I start this blog in proper railway territory, where the early pioneers brought their expertise to play in creating a new mode of transport to serve both ... read more

A short and only slightly delayed train ride found us in York by lunchtime. The purpose of this visit was to have afternoon tea at Bettys, which is a Yorkshire institution and somewhere I have wanted to visit for years, but haven't got round to it on previous trips to York, and I haven't been to any of the places that have Bettys either. The original Bettys was opened in 1919 in Harrogate and no one knows why it was named Bettys. The story behind this successful small chain is quite interesting. A Swiss orphan, Fritz Bützer, travelled Europe learning his craft and in 1907 arrived in England. He took the wrong train and ended up in Bradford instead of the south coast, his original destination. He found work for a Swiss confectioner and by 1915 ... read more

This morning, we were treated to two tours on the subject of the British Explorer Captain Cook. We started with Captain Cook's cottage in Melbourne with heygo guide Alex and then immediately went to Whitby in England to meet heygo guide John and visit the Cook Memorial Museum. The cottage in Melbourne was originally built in Yorkshire, England by Cook's parents, James & Grace, in 1755. The house was dismantled brick by brick in 1933. The bricks were numbered and transported to Melbourne in 253 cases & 40 barrels and the house reassembled in tribute to Cook. Even the ivy growing on the walls is the original ivy, also shipped out and replanted. Cook was born in the small Yorkshire village of Marton on the 27 October 1728 to a humble rural family. He was the ... read more

I named this blog after the Dylan track. Bob was busy in 1964, giving his view on social change that he was seeing in his native land. I am giving my view on the changing faces of Redcar. I last wrote about Redcar 5 years ago and in many ways, time has stood still here. In others, the world has been tipped upside down since the 2016 post and I don't refer to COVID. Steel has been in the blood of the town for generations, but is no more. The huge steel plant had been taken over by the Thai company, SSI in 2011 (although it will always be British Steel Redcar to me). The plant had been mothballed by previous owners, Corus and the UK arm of the Thai conglomerate was hailed for the forray ... read more

The thoughts of the country are turning towards the end of COVID restrictions. TFB has announced that the world can go back near normal on 19 July - whatever that means exactly, He has even caved in with the plan to restrict overseas travel. It is all stations go to head to amber list countries without quarantine on your return. Easyjet, Tui and Jet2 collectively can all breathe a sigh of relief. The welcome, the availability of facilities and the costs involved on these travel options remain somewhat vague, but at least they promise guarantees of sunshine. The lack of available opportunities to holiday in Europe on a budget have provided opportunities for others. The UK seems keen to rediscover the coast and where better than the North East Premier Seaside Resort? The accents are unfamiliar, ... read more

47 miles. 10.,6 mph 1250m. Ascent. Good meal in the Hostel last night until I suffered cramp at the table and nearly cleared the table of occupants in my reaction. Ten minutes standing on one leg and a bit of violent massage did the trick, although I had minor recurrences all evening. A walk around Hawes was pleasant before an early bed at 9,30pm. Cramp appeared briefly at mid afternoon at Tan Hill after a half of Guinness when I had to hop on one leg to my bike to the consternation of the gathered throng of drinkers in the outside garden. The ride along the valley through Askrig was very pleasant with the sun breaking through. The climb out of Askrig was not quite as nice giving a shock to my legs. Castle Bolton was ... read more

Lakes and Dales 2021. Day 1 27 June 51 miles. 10.4 MPH Ave. 1330 ascent Well! Here we are again on our first adventure this year following the horrendous world wide bout of COVID 19 coronovirus which has brought the world to its knees. The UK has been under restrictions since March 2020 with limits on mixing and travel both within the UK and abroad. Restrictions still apply but we can go to hotels if we don’t mix too much and mask wearing obligatory inside communal areas, so off we go. Several cyclists arrived in Clitheroe yesterday and went out for a meal together at Holmes Mill joining the throng of people finally released from purgatory. Luckily the weather forecast for the week is good, with no rain and temperatures up to 20 degrees C. Whilst ... read more

The lockdown has now eased to allow overnight stays. Hotels have opened up. Pubs are allowed to have indoor drinkers. Attractions and cinemas can re-open with limited numbers. However, the Spring weather has been shocking. Hospitality has had a slow re-emergence from the long hibernation. The most hardy and desperate of drinkers must have winced about sitting outside in the cold and damp just to savour a pint. There have been plenty with sun on their minds, who have been hankering after a trip to one of the "Green" list countries. Portugal has won hands down. Iceland and others in permissible territory apparently haven't captured the public imagination. We are at the Outlaws. The NEPSR is looking more December than May.
