Last night me and 3 of my flatmates ushered in the Christmas season by going ice skating! Every year a rink is built in front of the Forum (Norwich's library), near the market. It's not very big, but in a great location. We rode the bus down into town for the 8:00 session. We donned our skates- a challenge with their fancy little clippy things instead of good old-fashioned laces. Then we hit the ice. We were all a little bit shaky at the beginning, but me, Tina, and Kate got our footing quickly. Ian, on the other hand, had never been skating before and it showed! The rink wasn't too crowded- just the right amount of people were there- not packed but not empty either. The ice was a bit rough, it was the last ... read more

Today was one of my friend's (Marina) birthday. So to celebrate my international gang went out for dinner. The place we went is called Ah So, it's a Japanese restaurant. Oh my goodness it was fantastic! It was the kind where they cook right at your table and do tricks and make fire and all of that good stuff. A bit pricey, but I was stuffed at the end and it was all worth it! The first course was sushi and sashimi- it was the first time I've eaten sushi and it was actually really good! I had the fish eggs and raw salmon and everything. I was pleasantly surprised! The second course was grilled vegetables- onions, baby corn, asparagus, and zucchini (or courgettes in England!). Again, fantastic. They were served with a garlic soy sauce ... read more

Hey Hey Well after dragging out my leaving as long as i have i'm now infiltrating your mailboxes with more Wes related activities. Tonight has been my last night in Norwich, which is a surreal thing to type, celebrated in the traditional style of authentic "English" cuisine. Though i would recommend a boycott of the Prince of India after the blandest Chilli Masala possible. For the last 9 years this little inbred inclave of East England has been a welcoming, wonderful and occassionally weird place to live and i will miss it very much. Even more so i will miss all of my welcoming, wonderful, and occassionally weird (Umut) friends! It is going to be hard not seeing you all for soo long. I will miss you all Wes x ... read more

Halloween. One of the few times you can look absolutely ridiculous and get away with it. Although it is in its current form a truly American holiday, the British get into it as well! We started our festivities Monday night with some pumpkin carving! We produced a truly grotesque masterpiece that is still sitting in our window. I just hope it doesn't start to stink... Then Tuesday night was the Halloween LCR (the LCR is the night club on campus). So me and the rest of my flat donned our getups, ate some no-bake cookies (which I have gotten them addicted to), took pictures, and headed for the Union. We danced the night away to Halloween classics such as Thriller and Monster Mash (plus the usual dance club stuff). After the party was over, the Christian ... read more

So today was my trip to Cambridge. Because I am me, and wake up early for trips and exciting things, I woke up early this morning. So I took the opportunity to go to Zest (the on-campus cafeteria) for breakfast. I rather enjoy their version of the Full English Breakfast. It consists of bacon, sausage, a fried egg, baked beans, a hash brown, a piece of toast, and coffee (or tea). Terrible for me, but oh so delicious! Then I went to the bus stop and started talking to a French girl named Stephanie. She was really nice and we ended up hanging out the rest of the day. The trip to Cambridge took about an hour and a half on a monstrous double decker coach. The weather was pretty bad, cold, rainy, and gray. We ... read more

As is usual for a Saturday, I went exploring. Today I headed down to a little place called Cringleford. One of my friends recommended it and I like the name, so I went. To be honest the town wasn't that great. It did have a couple of really old churches, but where aren't there old churches in England? But I really enjoyed walking through a sleepy residential area. It was a good change of pace from "Uni" life. The only other people out were doing the same thing I was, just strolling and enjoying the fresh air. I noticed that a lot of the houses have gone to grass free yards. Their yards are covered in either colored gravel or that new rubber mulch stuff. Then they just have plants here and there. They are going ... read more

Since it was so nice today, rather than work on my papers, I decided to go to the city centre to visit the castle. I rode my bike into town, stopping first at Plantation Gardens. I happened to have a coupon for free entry and I figured I would check it out. It was alright, of course it is the middle of October, so the garden season is on its way out. I was surprised by how many flowers were still in bloom though. Right next to the gardens was the Roman Catholic Cathedral. Norwich is super special and has both an Anglican and Catholic Cathedral. The R.C. Cathedral wasn't finished until 1910 and so isn't quite as grand and exciting as the Anglican one. But it was still nice. From the Cathedral I went to ... read more

This morning I checked out the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts right here on campus. It was started when Sir Robert Sainsbury (of the supermarket empire of the same name) donated his art collection and funded the building in the 70s. There is a fantastic array of art from all over the world displayed next to modern pieces they inspired. For instance Alberto Giacometti's work is displayed in the same section as Mayan figures. You can see the parallels between the pieces. There were two special exhibitions as well. Alien Nation was a collection of pieces exploring "otherness" through the use of aliens and UFOs and such. All That Jazz was an exhibition of music translated into art or works by artists who were also musicians. Neither of these exhibits were particularly fascinating but fun to ... read more

Yesterday was a pretty nice day so I decided to do a little exploring. I rode my bike to the city center (and I didn't even get lost!) and stopped first at the Forum. The Forum is Norwich's library- it is a pretty sweet building. They have several restaurants and tourist information inside. Then I continued on to the The Cathedral of the Holy and Undivided Trinity Norwich. Quite a name. I wandered around, it was nice- a lot like all of the other Cathedrals I have seen, except this one is headed by the Queen, not the Pope. One of the coolest features was the Baptismal Font. It was made of copper and was originally used in a chocolate factory. When the factory shut down it was given to the church and I guess it ... read more
