Spent the day on Saturday in Norwich with some of my (CIPD) college friends. We meet up about every three months or so and normally go in the evening for some food and chatter. Planned the day in Norwich and we all planned to go by train. I live the furthest away so was catching the 9.02 am, picking up Rachael in Ipswich and Wendy at Stowmarket. Unfortunately, Helen could not make this day as she and her husband run a catering business and most weddings are on Saturdays. Ruth who lives in Ely near Cambridge was to meet us at the station at about 10.30 am. Ruth phoned me and stated that the trains were not running on schedule and that she would need to bus half the way. Ruth has recently had a ... read more

Time To Leave Home Europe » United Kingdom » England » Norfolk » Norwich By goodaontourApril 4th 2007 Its finally starting to sink in that we will be leaving the UK, on Friday 6th April 22:00pm British Airways Flight BA 0009 Destination Bangkok. My feelings at the moment are a mixture of excitement, nervousness and a bit of oh my god what am I doing thrown in for good measure. Weeks of trawling the internet, reading lonely planet guides and taking mental notes of all the things we intend to do and places to visit, are finally over we a... read more

The weeks since my last blog have been busy and have flown past. Uni is becoming more involved as I attempt to keep up with the readings, prepare presentations and actually attend my classes. I haven’t missed one yet, but I guess that’s not difficult on only six hours a week. These last weeks have been fuelled by frequent visits to the chocolate shop (dangerous place), the fish and chip shop and Caley’s hot chocolate, none of which has any positive influence upon my health aside from making me happy. On a healthier note, I have begun what promises to be frequent patronage to the Spice Man in the marketplace in town. Meags was the first to reveal to me the wonders of this place, full on Hessian bags folded down , containing dried fruits and ... read more

Straight after work on Friday I trained to Norwich to catch up with my mate Morgan who I played cricket with at OBC in Christchurch. The trip took about 2 hours and was shared with some interesting characters, especially from Diss onwards. Think derelicts, 14-year-old girls getting drunk, greasy old Italian guys trying to hit on those 14 year old girls. At least it made the ride go faster. We grabbed some beers and food on the way back from the station and had a good yarn about what we’d been up to over the past few months in the UK and about some good ol’ times in NZ, including our last prize giving at OBC where I wore a tight white dress and he wore a wrestlers outfit with cricket boxes over his ears. Morgan ... read more

I have had a very busy and exciting time over the last week seeing Norwich and starting uni again. I have gained an even further appreciation of the place and its history; I think the love I already have for the place will be difficult to get out of my system, this could be dangerous. My uni classes are very exciting, it’s so great to be learning history in the context that it was formed and from the people who it belongs to. There are a lot of young people here that are involved in their history which is very refreshing and so exciting. All of the friends I have made are very intelligent and interesting people so we have very interesting conversations at times (when we aren't trying to mimic each others accents). It is ... read more

I arrived in Norwich at about 10pm Thursday night after a gruelling flight and five hour bus trip from Heathrow. It was rather daunting arriving in a place at night time in the cold and trying to find my room but I managed somehow. The place was empty as everyone was still on holidays so when I woke the next morning there were no neighbours to meet yet. Had an orientation on the Friday which was ok following which I spent far too much money on things at the uni convenience store. At the time I could not have cared less as all I wanted to do was have a shower and eat and I hadnt done either for at least a day. My accomodation (I live in Larch House in the University Village) is set ... read more

Hello from Norwich, Norfolk, England! Yes, that's right, we made it home in one piece. We've been so busy this week, that I suddenly realised I hadn't done a last blog - for the rest of Chicago, Orlando & also Boston, the last place we went to, so here it is........ Chicago was one of the wettest places we've visited. We spent much of our time window shopping on the Magnificent Mile, literally a mile of Prada, Gucci, Gap (?!) and various other shiny glass fronted shops that we won't be able to afford to shop in. Ever. When it wasn't raining, we went to Grant Park to see the famous Bean Sculpture. Famous in Chicago at least. It's a giant, chrome blob that reflects the skyline brilliantly. Like most art, it's a bit pointless, but ... read more

….”Six, Five, Four…” All Journeys have a beginning and an end. Ours began in Cornwall. The idea was born in the cold depths of winter. Most trips to hotter climates often are and frequently follow hot-on-the-heels of one too many dark winters. Life, we had decided, was too short to put things off. There are times in all our lives when we are reminded painfully of the fragile nature of our existence. You never know what’s around the corner and it really doesn’t pay to put off something you want to do until tomorrow. And besides, we both wanted to feel again - " The heat of life in a handful of dust ", as Joseph Conrad once described it - that passion for life that we must squeeze from every moment before it is gone. ... read more
