We are Sailing!! It's official we are on holidays! In true cruise style we managed to consume our first meal in a buffet style restaurant before we even left the harbour! There was every possible type of food on offer...fortunately we restrained to ham, salad and a few cheesey potato wedges! Alex decided that he'd be content to eat her every day - peasant!, there's a dozen other restaurants to explore. I have been conned! I thought that ships leaving harbour was a big deal with crowds on the harbour, the band playing, bunting everywhere and crowds of people waving flags and arms in tearful delight. What rot! I counted 10 people on the end of the pier and just the one (a child!) was waving. A definite disappointment. Never mind, the on board string quartet ... read more

D+8 We finally arrived in Dover wet and tired after another long day in the saddle. We found a cheap hotel near the ferry terminal and decided to splash out on what will be our last English meal for 12 months. Our last English meal turned out to be a Chinese buffet - as much as could eat for £9. Not exactly traditional but excellent value for money and probably one of the best meals we have had for sometime. ... read more

It is funny how it is the little things that make you realise that you aren't at home. Like, a few days ago I realised that this was it, this was summer in England, well almost, apparently it isn't officially summer until this Saturday, 21st June, I thought it was the start of the month like at home. For some reason I kept thinking that it was spring, perhaps because I had been enjoying seeing the trees emerging from winter, everything growing green, flowers popping up to say hello. Which, when coming from a country where most of the trees aren't deciduous, is a much clearer indication of the seasons changing. So, while I keep having to check if it is about to rain, or wear a jumper around the place, I keep thinking it isn't ... read more

Well since the last update, I have been on the go non-stop. There haven’t been any overseas trips, and it feels like ages since my last one. I looked at my diary and it was May the 8th, so only 6 weeks! I don’t know how I am going to cope when I eventually make it back to New Zealand. But in the last 6 weeks, I have seen a lot more of the UK, met some really cool people, and had one very painful experience, but I will get to that in due course. After Menorca, the next event on my calendar was the concert show ‘Chess’ at the Royal Albert Hall, which featured several stars from other musicals, including my favourite, Kerry Ellis from ‘Wicked’. My faith was well founded as although she had ... read more

Landed at Heathrow and checked into the place I'll be residing at for the next month while here in merry 'ole England. Very nice place, a lot of history on the walls...pictures of teams dating back to as far as 1871. I was sent over from Canada as part of the advance party, so I got to check out the Dover area before the team arrived. One thing that I was surprised by was that you can see France from the cliffs of Dover. That must have made Dover very nervous during WWII... The first stop in Dover was the train station. Had a quick tea at the pub accross the street, and met the owner. Nice Irish lad, he bought a pint for both me and my colleuge. After the pub we headed up the ... read more

My first full day in Lille, Friday, was spent with Elizabeth taking me on a full tour of the city (albeit very quickly) and then a tour of the Musee des Beaux Arts which had a special Goya exhibit. It was nice. But that seems so long ago, compared with yesterday's adventure. So Elizabeth's friend Rachel really wanted to go to Dover because one of her friends suggested it. We thought we could do it in a day - train from Lille to Calais, ferry over to Dover, visit the city, then reverse it. Sounds good in theory, but it didn't really work out that way. We got to Calais nice and early. On the train, we played a fun game called "Ces vaches sont les miennes" which is exactly what it sounds like - claiming ... read more

So, back in the UK, safely collected and on the way to Grandmother's house, who, for future reference, is generally referred to as Nanny May. Nanny instead of grandmother and May, short for Mavis. Hence Nanny May. My other grandmonther's were all Nanny's too. Oh, and Nanny May is my Mum's mum. After an interesting ride we made it safe and sound, and I even managed to recognise some places along the way despite the fact it was really dark and clearly some things have changed since I was here last. Like the sea wall. Because due to recent (-ish) storms, the seawall has been rebuilt, higher and stronger, so unfortunately, unless you are taller than me, you can't actually see the beach, which, for those of you who are curious, consists of lots of large ... read more

No car, no bag. Al still in Paris Mo and Lisa- Call to check on the car and talk to a nasty man who is totally unwilling to help. Decide to rent a car and flee France for some fish and chips in England. Realize once they reach the Euro Tunnel that is actually a train that you drive your car into. Drink wine; eat cheese, in a car, in a train, under the English Channel. Once in the tunnel, we broke-out the wine, bread, cheese and salami for a quick picnic under the English Channel. There and then during my conversation with Lisa, realized that, I was blessed with having such a great person as a travel partner, we shared stories and got to know one another, we both have lots of same values and ... read more

I have decided to write a travel blog when I am away so am just doing a little practice entry! I hope that you'll all read the blog and not get too jealous! (it is currently snowing in Costa Del Douvres as I write this!) Maybe it'll even prompt you to jump on a plane and come and see me!Yipee! I have exactly 10 days and 4 hours left untill I fly. I'm not organised at all (although I do have two waterproof covers for my bag (miscalculation-w oops), a whistle, a mosquito net, a very snazzy bag with hidden wheels and a special travelling towel that supposedly dries in 2 minutes! I have moments where I feel really nervous and think "what the hell am I doing?! I'm the girl who gets lost in Tescos ... read more

A Week's Drive from Cartagena to Folkestone We are now almost finished our trip with stays in Folkestone (Lesley's brother and family) and then Guildford (Anne and Graham/daughter and son in law). We set off from El Portus where we entertained Gerry and William from Devon and fellow members ofour Ringwood naturist club. We had popped in to see them on our way to Plymouth for the ferry in December. They had already booked a holiday in one of the cabins at El Portus for a month starting just as we would be leaving. We popped in to see a cycling friend who was on a cycling holiday based in Denia. They were having a lovely time cycling the coast and hills around. But then it was north and north again. The trip went without a ... read more
