Yes, you read that right. But it was an accident. I checked out of my guesthouse s little early so that I could make the trek to the White Cliffs before my train to Edinburgh. My breakfast this morning was this delightful little spread of fruit, toast with marmalade, pastries, and some Frosted Flakes :) So, full bellied I started out, trying to remember the directions that the guesthouse manager had given me. "Go out the door and to your left, then when you get to a fence, go left again, continue on for about a 5 minute walk, then you'll come to a roundabout. Continue on past a pink hotel up a steep ramp and continue on for about 10mins. You will then be directly on the cliffs." Sounds easy right? About a 20minute walk? ... read more

This morning I woke up and... stayed in bed an extra few hours. I had a ticket to parliament and was planning on seeing Buckingham Palace, but honestly I could not get out of bed. My left shoulder is very visibly higher than my right shoulder due to the HUGE knot there. I think one of the things I'm learning on this journey of self discovery is to appreciate imperfection. Normally I get anxiety if I go to a place and can't see every corner of it. For example: when I go to Lagoon I have to walk every corner of it or else I feel like I am missing out. Imagine the extent of my anxiety when not able to see every corner of a country. Or a city! I have been to London and ... read more

I felt like I needed to readress my backpack situation: What I am really glad I brought-- converter/adapter, heating pads for my back, cliff bars (not a lot of time for real meals), socks, my brothers Mophie iPhone case (it charges my phone throughout the day without being plugged int), computer. What I wish I would have brough or brought more of-- Ibuprofen, undies (don't worry I stopped and bought some at a little shop in Piccadilly :), my own internet hotspot, Ibuprofen. Oh and Ibuprofen. What I could have done without--half my clothes (I'd rather be stinky than have to carry it all), flashlight, loofah (threw it away on the first day, it being SO HEAVY and all), tossed my travel bath towel, my extra bags. I sent a lot of my little trinkets home ... read more

Just finished up some hillbilly laundry. Directions: Open up sack of dirty clothes. Try not to inhale the smell of old sweat, festering dirty-city-rainwater, and whatever else is in there. Dump said clothes into miniature sink in room. Fill with hot water. Add travel Tide packet. Scrub. Burn your freaking hands off. Rinse. Rinse. ..Rinse again... Give up and throw them all into the shower. Let shower run over clothes until rinsed. Hang over any protruding object in sight.... read more

So this is my first entry... I've made this for my Aunt who doesn't have Facebook but wants to keep up with me and what's going on so thought I'd just put my first blog up now. Not long to go now, 26 days! I'm really looking forward to it but not so much saying goodbyes to everyone! Still selling up everything in the house, think I've sold my car which is where I'm getting majority or my travel money from so that's good. Not sure what else to say now, will post again at the airport or in Japan inbetween flights... read more

The next day mom and I got up and headed to the train station. We caught a train to Dover to see the Cliffs of Dover. We really didn’t plan much or know what was in the city, so we were just winging it. We explored the city a bit and found a local Italian restaurant that ended up being really delicious. After lunch, mom and I embarked on our hike. The cliffs of Dover are just large cliffs that have chalk rock on the outside, making them white. You can hike along the edge of the cliff for two miles until you reach a lighthouse. I love lighthouses so I really wanted to hike to it, even though it was closed that day. The hike turned out to be really nice, and the weather was ... read more

This weekend we stayed in town to try and save some of our pennies. Here's what we did: Thursday night: It's the season for the Italian/Latin Carnivale, where people dress up in beautiful costumes and party just before Lent begins (40 days before Easter). So in honour of the tradition, Mike's school (CTLS) held a Carnivale party. We decided to stray a bit from the traditional elegant masks and wear masks of famous people. Mike was where's Waldo (or in the UK, Where's Wally? or in French, Ou est Charlie?), and Elysia dressed as a female Mr. Bean. She really wanted to wear the face of the queen, but Mike thought that was tacky (although later at the party we found people dressed as the entire royal family, so we weren't the only famous people there). ... read more

So I'm not all that impressed with Dover, the city anyway. The cliffs and the castle were great, but everything else not so much. My day started off good. I left Canterbury, took a short train ride to Dover, and had breakfast at one of the little cafes in the main market area. Then I went to the castle. It was amazing! It was massive, with numerous buildings spread out over the top of the white cliffs. You could see it from just about anywhere in town. The first thing I did was a tour of the wartime tunnels. The first level I toured was the middle one, originally built in the late 1700's. The tour mainly focused on the role it played in WWII, especially the evacuation of Dunkirk. It managed communications and monitored ships ... read more

There is a hardly any feeling worse than coming home from a trip abroad knowing that your holiday is over and the next thing to think about is work again. We usually try on our way home to break our journey and take in something on the way that we have not seen before. Anyone who has followed this blog will realise that before visiting Belgium I had wanted to go to Kent so it seemed logical to call in on Deal and Dover on the way home. Our first visit of the day was to the pretty castle at Deal. We tossed a coin before visiting as we had the choice of both Deal and Walmer. Deal won but with hindsight I think that perhaps Walmer had extra visitor features including gardens. Deal was one ... read more

We decided to walk Brighton beach early before being on our way to Dover. We enjoyed the tide coming in and searched for unique shells and stones. Such an old area of growth, so many structures around which lost use 100's of years ago but still exist. On the road again, we thought we'd stay off the motor way and take the scenic route. More narrow roads and crazy steep hills, the poor diesel is really getting a workout. We've seen so many beautiful parts of England and will never get sick of it although we can't believe the number of sheep here. Some fields have thousands of them. We stopped at the water edge at Dymchurch. This is another town of rich history. It also has a 4 mile long wall along the English Channel ... read more
