Taking a suggestion from a friend (thanks Macy!), we started out with some apple cider donuts that did not disappoint. The cider mill we stopped at displays the creation process for those cinnamony cidery clouds of happiness, and has piping hot cider to wash them down with. We both ate a couple *cough* three, before a drive up Smugglers Notch to Mt. Mansfield for a hike. After we got up near the top, the temperature dropped approximately 9,000 degrees. If any of you know me and cold—you know that that hike sure as heck didn't happen. I am a strong person, but once you add a little chilly weather and I want to sit in fetal position, cry, and hibernate for the rest of my life. Why I keep traveling to cold places in the fall, ... read more

Phillip cooked us breakfast this morning and introduced us to his daughter, Layla. He has travelled the world and adopted her during a two year stay in Azerbaijan. His life story was fascinating and we enjoyed talking with him throughout our scrumptious eggs and potatoes. Big shout out to him and his route suggestion which took us on the most beautiful scenic drive up through Massachusetts and Vermont. There are plenty of places to buy maple products throughout New England, but we wanted to wait and buy it from a Vermont farm. Just a ways into Vermont we saw a sign for a small maple farm down a little turn off. We pulled up to several large fields of cows and a small farmhouse with a sign on the barn saying something along the lines of, ... read more

I had major flashbacks to my UK trip this morning on the train from Grand Central to White Plains New York to pick up our rental car. Time for the best part of the trip! Our Mazda 5 looks like a mini-minivan, but gave us plenty of room for our luggage (...and lots of souvenirs). Within the first 30mins of our trip we had already found our first adventure—Sleepy Hollow! My family used to watch the cartoon version of Sleepy Hollow and I fell in love with that goofy Ichabod Crain. This was very necessary detour. Normally I have things very planned when I travel, but this trip was loosely mapped out and we have just decided things as we go. It's both stressful and exciting at the same time. The city is pretty small and ... read more

We slept in a little bit this morning because we were planning a good long bike ride through Central Park and needed our energy, but we also needed food. I was craving something asian (broad-I know) so we stopped at this little Japanese place called Sappuro. I had delicious vegetable ramen and had a total foodgasm.. ahh! Jk...but kinda. The bike rental store was waiting with our bikes, but was a little ways outside of the park, so we had to brave the NY traffic for a couple blocks. A little scurry! There is really only one way you can go around the park by bike, but we would get off and walk them down to the ponds or events that were going on. We happened to be there during Oktoberfest so there were lots of ... read more

Well New York is—New York. I have been here before and felt like I'd got my fill for a lifetime, but here I am, back in the busy, smelly streets of the Big Apple. It's not that I don't like the city, I just prefer nice people and slower paces. I hate sitting in dim lit subways and using copious amounts of hand sanitizer every time I have to stand and use the hand rails. We came here for food and the shows, though, so I will focus on the positives. After a red eye from Salt Lake to JFK we were hungry and tired and hoping that we could drop our bags off at our hotel. (Side note—why do I keep subjecting myself to the torture of red eye flights?? I am always a zombie ... read more

I can't wait to tell you about the events of the last few days! I feel like a pirate, or a character from Lost. We took there Ferry early morning to Koh Phi Phi Don Island and felt like we were pulling into Neverland. The green islands and long tail boats and colorful fish--I was waiting for Rufio to come Bangarang out of the jungle. Always had a crush on Rufio. Naturally we were charged some bogus “tax” to exit the ferry boat. You aren't told about this tax when you board the ferry in Phuket so you have no choice but to pay it. Otherwise, what, you swim back to Phuket?? They charge you to breath in Southeast Asia I swear. “Tweny baht!” for this and “onehunred baht!” for that... it's ridiculous. They even have ... read more

Well, it happens to the best of them I suppose. We missed our alarm and woke up late, luckily we made the flight alright! We flew to Kuala Lampur, Malaysia for a long layover and had to go through customs and immigration even though we had a transfer flight to Phuket. It was really obnoxious but not gonna lie—I'm loving that Malaysia stamp in my passport. Got to Phuket pretty late but we were planning on just getting some dinner and pool time in before bed. The minibus that we hired to take us to our hotel kept a van full of people waiting in the heat for 30mins while they waited to fill one more seat which caused some early tension/frustration. When they drove out of the way to their main office so that we ... read more

Our last day in Cambodia was pretty bittersweet. We LOVED Cambodia but were excited to move on to Phuket and get some beach time in. Had to fit in as much as possible before we left! The Big Buddha in Phnom Kulen National Park is where a lot of locals come to pray and worship. Prayers are being spoken into the huge sound system reaching around the complex, and a stick of incense is burning in most everyone's hand. It is very crowded there, and you have to push your way up several sets of tall stairs to reach the top where the Buddha is lying withing a small building. You, of course, have to take your shoes up to walk to the top and, luckily, we had our buddy Kheung there to keep a close ... read more

Catching up on two days now, I'm terrible! I have gone into vacation mode and don't really want to do anything but recuperate from the extreme heat and humidity. We've been getting in some good pool time because it's the only time you can be outside and not nearly die from heat exhaustion. Sweat literally pours off of me in a constant stream, I have never experienced anything like it! Yesterday we left Vietnam and were pretty psyched for Cambodia. We flew Cambodia Air and arrived in 45mins or so. My luggage is getting heavier and heavier from all of the souvenirs I've been picking up, but I got some really sweet stuff. Spoons, of course, are the number one priority. Yes, I am one of THOSE people-- a souvenir spoon collector. My grandma collected them ... read more

Today was one of the rougher days, honestly. Very emotional. I woke up with last nights' impression of Vietnam-- big bright city, cleaner than Chiang Mai, friendly people... then learned better today. I guess that is part of the experience; seeing the lights and darks, highs and lows of a city. We ate a fancy breakfast at our fancy hotel and then caught a taxi. We really wanted to learn more about the Vietnam war and have a little cultural lesson today and oh boy did we get it. First of all I should mention the taxi driver, since he was pretty influential in the tone of the outing. He was very peppy and nice starting out, and he agreed to take us to three places for 970,000 dong (about $50)- the Cu Chi War Tunnels, ... read more
