Got up early (too early) got showered, and headed downstairs to what I was told was to be quite an “authentic British breakfast”. I was ushered in to the dinning area at 9.00, and offered cereal or muesli (if you ever have the chance, it’s lovely). There was milk and orange juice, as well as toast, and different homemade preserves. There was also a hot tea kettle and a French press on the table. Then Linda, the proprietor, came in with a plate, it was heaped with eggs, ham (bacon), sausage, tomatoes, potatoes, and mushrooms. Just brilliant! I sat there for the better part of an hour trying to get it all down. I can’t even begin to describe how delicious it was. The rest of the day was walking around St. Albans and seeing glorious ... read more

Those were the words Lindsay said to me as we were about to board our plane from Atlanta to London. It is an eight hour flight, which makes it one hell of a pond! We arrive at our destination, in St. Albans at 14.00 local time. We have spent 15 hours traveling, and it’s been 27 since I’d had a shower. We got lost in St. Albans looking for her brother, Robin’s house. When we finally turned around so I could find a map, we were at his place in 10 minutes. One of the first things anyone would notice is that all of the “townhouses” are narrow. I mean, there were some as little as eight feet wide. They are a bit deep, but it doesn’t make up for the fact that it’s necessary to ... read more

I have been getting some questions as to why my blog is listed as EscapeFromPeoria. I meant to mention that when I first setup, but I seem to have forgotten. My great-uncle Dan Crowley made the Guinness Book of World Records back in the mid-80’s as the Most Traveled Disabled Man. He spent 53 years traveling all over the world, and telling everyone in the family, and anyone else willing to listen, about it. He would send us all the infamous Christmas Letter. It was never about bragging, I don’t want to make it sound like that. He just loved to tell stories, and to travel. He was in a wheelchair the whole time, which made it difficult. He was also a professor of Anthropology at UC-Davis, so he had to publish about these “work trips”, ... read more

Well, its only 10 days until i'll be getting on that plane and leaving England for a while. Thought i'd best get to grips with this blog thing while still in the comfort of my own home and with unlimited time! Am slowly recovering from my leaving party yesterday. A big thank you to all of you who came and made the night so special; the costumes were fantastic and the memories (and T-shirt, thanks Sarah and Anne) will come with me to Australia. Another thank you goes to my work collegues who gave me a lovely send off last week. Thanks for the presents which will all be coming with me and reminding me of the fab bunch of vets, nurses and receptionists i used to work with. My next entry will probably be written ... read more

Bonjour... Ich Bin Stark un Bist Du Dick yah? Thats the only French/German I had ever learnt during my schooling years. The relevence of that exercise has nothing to do with this post. Its been awhilst since I posted anything, detailing highly adventurous expeditions and risky run in's with the italian mafia but the reason is.. I haven't been anywhere special to report about. Since returning from Ireland I've been doing lots of stuff in and around London. Seeing Theatre shows, local attractions, big cycle rides, nothing that involves hopping on a plane and seeing a country. All is about to change. In 4 weeks. This week I'm doing a big London sight seeing thing with a girl I met through Martins lectures. So shall be picture aplenty... stay tuned. I'm also heading upto Alton Towers ... read more

We left Oldham (birthplace of William Walton) and drove down to Hertfordshire where we were given the challenge of clearing a neglected garden in Walton-on-Thames. Deb and I took up the challenge, leaving Rory and Owen with friends and in-laws. A week soon passed and we both have aching limbs to prove it. Last weekend we went kiting, (real kiting) with Dave and Kim. Unfortunately the weather was naff on Sunday so we could not have another go. If you get the chance, try it ! Today we are catching a ferry to Dunkirk then on to Ostend before driving to rellies in Nackenheim , near Mainz in Germany. We should be back at the end of April for Owen to sit his O-levels in May/June.... read more

Boarding the British Airways flight from Jo'Burg to London I was full of excitement. I have completed the first small quarter of my journey. I had seen the different aspects of Africa; from the rich to the poor I had seen and done a lot and there is still a lot I would like to return to do; but for now its onwards to the UK. I arrive at heathrow after a fairly uncomfortable flight. the inflight entertainment was good, tv screens built into the seats etc but i was dehydrated and crunched into the corner with 2 oversized females taking up most of the room. I was greeted in Heathrow with cold weather; and good ole me was sporting a tight t shirt... excellent for cold nipples to show there stuff. my first day was ... read more

Hello everyone! I post today from the glamorous location of Chorleywood. As it is only one day until I set off on my travels, I thought now might be a good moment to launch this page of my mutterings. I have managed to pick up a little leaving present from England in the form of a little cold. This has left me with a sexy jazz singer-esque voice, which sounds nothing short of scary. After trying to read every review in existence to choose our hotel, we eventually booked our first couple of nights in Delhi and have arranged to be picked up from the airport. With luck that should all work out. This weekend I've just been at home, building what would be best described as a mountain of stuff which needs packing. At some ... read more
