Today we got up, grabbed a quick breakfast muffin and coffee and prepared to meet our taxi to board the train to London. We will be staying at my favorite place....The Balmoral House Hotel. Its a small bread & breakfast hotel with small rooms, no elevator, and no air BUT its where we met Flavio Martinez and he is our dear friend here in London. This will be my third stay here and I love the area. It is easy to get too from the airport. It has a major subway/train station around the corner. There are a variety of restaurants. Plus Flavio takes good care of us. Our train ride was uneventful but good. We got to see lots of countryside. We could order breakfast but I just had coffee and yogurt. I was about ... read more

Hotellista piti lähteä klo 11 ja lento lähti Heathrowlta klo 18. Menin metrolla Paddingtoniin, koska siellä oli paikkoja, joihin saattoi jättää matkatavaran säilytykseen 5 punnalla. En kuitenkaan hyödyntänyt sitä palvelua. Tein pienen kävelykierroksen ja lounastin. Olin lentokentällä hyvissä ajoin. Turvatarkastus meni alle vartissa. Piti sitten odotella, ennen kuin tuli tieto lähtöportista. Käytin kolikoita ja pikkusetelin isoon olueen. Lentokoneessa punaviini ja leffa, jonka parissa aika kului. Vantaan kentältä ostin evästä ja kerkesin hyvin lähijunaan. Ratikalla pääsi puolet matkasta hotellille Albertinkadulle.... read more

Paluumatkalla vaunu oli ihan täynnä.... read more

Areenalle joutui jonottamaan jonkin aikaa. En ostanut mitään syötävää enkä juotavaa ja menin istumaan jo puoli tuntia ennen konsertin alkua. Yllätyin siit... read more

Dear All Yay! I'm on the eve of another (fairly) big trip again, having all packed for a two-week visit to the United States of America tomorrow! I'm very excited to be heading to the States again, it is certainly one of my favourite countries, and there is just so much of it to explore. I was telling someone about my trip the other day, and they asked me how many US states I had been to. This is something I didn't actually know the answer to. I knew I had been to 87 countries, but I guess now that I plan to visit a different part of the States every Easter until at least my current tourist visa runs out seven years from now (and probably more after I renew it!), I think it's probably ... read more

Well, all of our problems seem to come to the surface at Heathrow. After a lovely breakfast we tried to get the lift down to the Heathrow transfer trains - the lift wouldn’t work. So we found another lift that did work, only to find that the train platforms were closed and a bunch of security men standing around chatting, taking the time to briefly tell us the transfer train wasn’t working. I had the temerity to say “well how do you get to Terminal 2?” And they said the Piccadilly line, underground. So we turned and muttered a few choice words about Heathrow. One of the security guys must have realised we were strangers in a strange place and followed us, asking if we knew the way. We said we had no idea so he ... read more

Well, what a HUGE day. We were up early this morning. We had told Sheila not to worry about brekky but that just distressed her, so she left a tray of cereal, fruit, yoghurt, toast and scones for us. We left at 6:30am and drove through ALL weather conditions to get to edinburgh airport to return the car before 1pm. We had rain, sleet and snow as well as brilliant sunshine requiring sunnies (Tom’s broke ages ago so he was wearing mine). it was a 6 hour drive with two stops for petrol. I guess because it’s a hybrid they figure you don’t need a big tank. We added up the kilometres Tom drove in the two cars - a total of 2642 kilometres! The Hertz lady thinks we covered everything and everywhere. Today was a ... read more

Wow, so much to cover. Well we had a disruption free journey across the beautiful French countryside and over the English Channel from Calais, France to Dover, England. I couldn't help but picture every WW2 movie I had seen across the large flat swathes of green fields dotted with small villages here and there. The crossing was a scant 1 1/2 hrs, despite the gale force winds and whitecap large swells throughout most of the trip. Only the die hard French smokers ventured onto the deck until we made it within sight of the white cliffs of Dover. We made it onto London in the evening, all in all an approximate 9 hour journey. Our hotel, The Belgrave, was conveniently located in Westminster, a short walk from the Thames river, tube station and bus stops. Our ... read more

The United Kingdom’s capital city has much to offer, as evidenced by this quote from the famous 18th century English writer Dr. Johnson: "Why, Sir, you find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London. No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford." — Samuel Johnson Not sure I buy into that statement, however during this latest trip, I’m focusing on the East End of London which has an infamous claim to fame for being the “playground” of Jack the Ripper. I intend to explore the Isle of Dogs and Canary Wharf - two names probably not that well known (if at all, unless you’re a born-and-bred Londoner). Located on a large peninsula bounded on three sides ... read more

For our last day in the UK, we got up early and headed over to Borough Market. It’s a foodie paradise. The good thing ( for our wallets) was that it’s hard to pack fresh cheese and meats in luggage for overseas travel. We did find some excellent pastries and coffee for breakfast, though. We continued our stroll around the Southwark neighborhood. When we were in London at the beginning of the trip, we stayed right next to historic Hyde Park and it really felt like London. This hotel and neighborhood has much more of a generic big city feel. The hotel is excellent- with all the modern touches - but it could be anywhere. As we were walking around, we passed the Tate Modern museum and, since it was free, we decided to go in ... read more
