The remnants of celebratory flags wafted in the breeze especially over the large buildings. King Charles was not in sight and Queen Camilla was missing in action but a few people were wandering around waving flags in a dazed manner. Had they still been celebrating or did they not know it was all over? Most Londoners, and from all accounts most British, seemed to have yawned and watched match of the day instead. Having arrived the week after I took a few snaps with the obligatory London buses and the fluttering Union Jacks. We were on our way to the Bloomsbury Cabaret Club to a programme called The Three Queens. Wasn't sure what to expect and I'm not sure the cast did either! I haven't ever been to a cabaret show before but if this was ... read more

Our plane home was at 6 pm, which gave us time to have one final lunch. We choose Rock & Sole Plaice, the oldest chipper in the city. They make very good fish & chips, and the tartar sauce is the best. We have eaten here before, but you can’t be in England and not have fish & chips at least once. You can choose from 5 different fishes for your fish, cod, haddock, rock, plaice or sole. I had cod Jerry had haddock. It is one piece of fish perfectly battered and cooked; the chips are thick cut and my only issue with them is that they could be crispier. They have other things on the menu, one of which we got for a little starter, crispy camembert, it was the dish of the day. ... read more

Our final stop before getting on the plane home is London. The airfare to fly round trip Boston/London is so much cheaper than flying direct to Paris, or in October Barcelona, that just makes London a stop on any trip to Europe. While our last night in Paris the hotel was paid with IHG points, our night in London is paid with Hilton Honors points. So, we are at the Waldorf Astoria. Both hotels are 5 star, but the difference between the two our extreme. The Hotel in Pairs, upgraded us to a better room, included breakfast, had fresh strawberries upon arrival, and at check in explained everything, welcomed us and IHG premier members and made you feel special. At the Waldorf, barely got the room let alone any welcome, put us in a Handicap room, ... read more

Last time I went into London for a day of photography (see ), I moaned about the £22 cost of the travelcard. Now, it's an even more shocking £29. I can't believe that it's gone up by that much in a year, so I suspect that the ticket machine that has replaced the person in the now closed ticket office is programmed to sell the most expensive tickets going. I also think they have extended peak-time to weekends, as another way of increasing prices by stealth. Either way, I felt like I'd been mugged. My first stop was Canary Wharf, where there's another colourful tunnel that was worth a few pictures both inside and along the outside (it's actually above, not under the ground) looking towards all the other buildings. Similarly to last time when I ... read more

In August and November 2022 and in April 2023, I had planned retreats and volunteering assignments in two retreat centres in the UK. Since I had a bit of time, I wanted to travel by train. In order not to sit on the train for 13 hours, I decided to have stopovers in Brussels on my outbound journeys and in London on my journeys back home. There are blog posts on my stopovers in Brussels (https://www.travelblog.org/Europe/United-Kingdom/England/Herefordshire/Ledbury/blog-1083302.html) and on my stays in the UK (https://www.travelblog.org/Europe/Belgium/Brussels-Capital-Region/Brussels/blog-1082001.html), so here is what I did during my three stopovers in London. First stopover, September 2022 My first stopover... read more

So it was up and at em at 5:30 am. We made it to the Delta Terminal expecting to see it crowded with people. My last experience with Heathrow was it was a mess! It was over crowded, not enough workers, crazy lines everywhere. When Chrissy and I arrived there must have been only 20 people. We went right through baggage, ticketing, and security and were gate side in about 20 minutes. That gave us plenty of time for breakfast. So we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast, our last in England, for this time. We boarded our plane about 9:15 (take off at 10) and we were up in the air and headed toward home. I typically never sleep on the plane going home and this time was no different. I watched a couple of movies and ... read more

Today we woke up to pouring rain. We made coffee in our rooms and started repairing our suitcases. Our time in London is drawing to a close. We have tickets for the Tower of London but not until noon. We were going to ride the hop on hop off buses but not in the pouring rain. I’d read that the rain would stop for a few hours around noon. We decided to take a taxi to the coffee shop, Paul’s Three Quays, right across from the Tower of London. It wasn’t crowded and the views were great. We each got something to eat and drink as we awaited our turn to get in. Once the rain subsided we went from shop to shop avoiding the rain. There seemed not to be a long line at the ... read more

Today was a day off of sorts for me. All the kids were going to the Star Wars Convention, so I would be by myself. I already had to go to The Royal Albert Hall to pick up my lost Messiah Program. I also needed to wash clothes for the remainder of the trip. So after breakfast I headed to our room to organize, gather up all our dirty clothes, and head to the Central Wash laundromat just a few blocks up the street I called ahead to make sure they were going to be open….and they were. I was surprised how busy they were but I only had to wait a few minutes on a dryer. They’re about 20 washers, but only 8 dryers. Once the laundry was done I came back to our room ... read more

April 7 & 8 – Heading Home WOW! I slept well, I rollover expecting to see Kirsten all dressed and ready. Nope she is still asleep, I just drift away.... Around 8:30 we get up, dressed, and have a wonderful breakfast at our hotel. After breakfast we have packed our suitcases and are ready, we loaded them into the car and checked out and said our goodbyes. We are heading toward London’s Heathrow Airport, yes, it’s coming to an end. However, there is always time to squeeze in one more stop. So, we decided to visit the village of Wells. Wells has one of the largest cathedrals in England. We parked the car and made our way toward the cathedral, then we were told the cathedral was closing at 11:30 am to prepare for Good Friday ... read more

Today we met for breakfast downstairs. Everyday our hotel has a full English breakfast or cereal, pastries, juice and milk.....of course coffee and tea is always available. Once breakfast was over Corey, Jennifer, and I went for a walk. Our Hotel is very near St. Mary's Hospital. Joe Griffith and family were here over Christmas break and he suggested we go see the plaque commemorating where Alexander Fleming invented penicillin. Corey was walking on the outside and his foot turned over and he fell on both knees. I actually did the same thing in 2019 but a bus was coming and I thought i was going to get run over! Fortunately neither of us was hurt too bad. Corey discovered later his knees were scraped pretty good. We saw the plaque and thought about all the ... read more
