It was forecast to rain early, so instead of leaving my bags until later, I decided to go to The Cumberland early to see if they could hold my bags. After a 15 minute bus ride, I arrived at the Cumberland which is directly across from Marble Arch. Its in the same area that I stayed in during my last trip overseas. Happily I was able to access my room right then and there! This place is all about security. They had a man stationed at the entrance of the elevator that made you check your card before getting on to the elevator. Then you had to use your card to push up or down to call the elevator. Next, once inside the elevator you had to use the card again before pushing the floor your ... read more

Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge built between 1886 and 1894. The bridge crosses the River Thames close to the Tower of London. The bridge consists of two bridge towers tied together at the upper level by two horizontal walkways, designed to withstand the horizontal tensionforces exerted by the suspended sections of the bridge on the landward sides of the towers. The vertical components of the forces in the suspended sections and the vertical reactions of the two walkways are carried by the two robust towers. The bas... read more

The previous day had been about going underground for refreshment. Today, we were aiming higher. 32 floors to be precise. The Northern Line was behaving itself and we alighted at London Bridge early for our “appointment”. The rush hour was in full swing. The army of commuters were speeding towards the office. Latte to go in hand. Sneakers, or trainers in the local dialect, on the feet. As one group headed towards their fat salaries, another group seeking the good life was already up as early. A long line had already formed round the corner on St Thomas Street outside the Immigration Office. A good start in any British culture test - a test we are assured will be our salvation going forward. If you can’t queue, fitting into the British way of life can be ... read more

I am a friendly person. I like being friendly! I smile at strangers, make conservation with the checkout girl, and genuinely want to share everything. This attitude lends itself perfectly to my small village life, but when I bring it back to a big city, I'm always amused at it's uniqueness. Not that people in cities aren't friendly; I just think they are genuinely overwhelmed with action and activities and stress and appointments and advertising and pressure and well, just too wrapped up to unwind. And usually on their way to work while I'm casually strolling the streets. Either way, I'm the same me no matter where my feet tread, so I brought my sunshine and smiles to the Peckham Rye neighborhood to visit B's artist's studio in the famous revamped Bussey Building. Her directions were ... read more

Back in late Augsut I secured tickets up the Shard, The View, for Scott's birthday for the opening weekend. The first day of opening was Friday 1st Feb, and it wasn't a very nice day. So we were rather pleased to awake to a blue sky and sunshine on Saturday morning. The clouds did start to roll in, however it made for a dramatic sunset of west london and Battersea Power Station which was dripping in flaming light. The entry all went rather smoothly for the second day of being opened. Only slight hiccup was you couldn't use the E-ticket on your device, they printed the ticket out. There were two lifts up and it was all done rather nicely with murals and videos while you waited and in the lift. Mind you we didn't do ... read more

Had a splendid day out in London town on Monday where I managed to glimpse the Eye (enormous!) and take a tour of Shakespeare's Globe. My original plan was to fit in the Tate Modern as well, but time seemed to escape me and it was a choice between that and the Globe. A choice between art and literature? For me literature wins. The Globe was fascinating, even though the reconstruction has some obvious changes that make it suitable to a modern day performance (lighting so performances can be done at night for one thing). I stopped for a while on the Southbank to take in the sites and sounds, and also enjoyed being a spectator to one or two quality street performers. Tuesday I spent the day with my cousins at their house in Egham ... read more

Yesterday was my last day in London for awhile as I depart henceforth to Espana! Ay de mi que fabuloso, you might being saying to yourself. Maybe not. Regardless— Yesterday I went to the Tate Modern Art Museum and I can honestly say that it’s one of the most stimulating and beautifully presented collections I’ve seen while here. The space itself is reminiscent of an enormous warehouse, the entrance has a high ceiling tangled with intersecting metal supports. The walls of each floor offer a depiction of a timeline including artists and movements to contextualize the material and remind one of chronology. The place is all clean lines with personality instead of coolness and clever touches. In return for my coat at the coat check, I got a small metal tile with a number. How cool ... read more

I forgot to add our trip to the Imperial War Museum. Milo couldn't move in till 6 pm, we had some time to kill and took the tube over to super big guns, and air planes, submarines, and even trenches!! We both agreed our 30 minute trip could of been extended for a couple hours. Miles then also said that. "Now that is the way to do a museum." ...we are a little different.... read more

This is my first blog entry since becoming unemployed - ahem, I mean 'freelance', as do they all - on May 27. As an earlier blog here details, I've taken a break from my career to go to university. I have taken a bit of a punt in leaving the job without having a place at uni secured, going on faith (as usual) and hoping a little luck will fall upon my cause. Until then, my job is to rest. Which does make me sound like a convalescant grandma: and I sort of am, as I've spent most of my time out of work so far in Kings' College hospital or the local GP surgery, or on the phone to either of them. As dictated by the law of Sod, on my very first day out ... read more

2/27/11- Today I was to excited to sleep, knowing I was attending my first football match in Europe. However after waking up at 630 and not being able to get back to sleep till 730 I woke up at 10. I showered and went in to the kitchen for breakfast. I made 2 eggs, 2 hash browns, 4 strips of bacon, a piece of toast, and baked beans. (customary for English breakfasts) It was a great breakfast, but I was off to the stadium. I rode the tube there taking the jubilee line but had to switch to hit upton park. As soon as I switched trains I noticed a different atmosphere. Everyone was wearing West Ham United colors and seemed excited about the upcoming event. I marched to the stadium side by side with ... read more
