This is my area - I am near Archway Station in Islington. I like the area a mix of people from different countries and backgrounds. The flat has about 7 sets of stairs but the view from the kitchen (which is set in the roof) is rewarding. The villa seems to be broken up into several flats and we have the top one.... read more

Hello all, I have had quite a busy week filled with travels, ups and downs, cyclists threatening my life and so much more. But honestly, I love it here. I know this is where I am supposed to be. We took a trip to Camden Town for a bit and it was great to get out of Kings Cross for a bit. Today I think we're going to the largest thrift shop district in london (here they are vintage stores so sometimes it is pricey but always a good time). I met a kid, Turner who reminds me so much of Jacob that it's nice to be around him. Makes me miss home less. I really love it here and I am planning a trip with some people to Paris for a weekend. I don't have ... read more

After a most epic flight from Sydney through to London via Taipei (28 hours!), I arrived at Heathrow where Shawn was waiting for me with my Oyster card. We hopped on the tube and headed straight back to Islington and to a pub for a well deserved pint of cider. We listened to a live jazz band and chilled into the night. I was quite taken aback by the daylight hours, it doesn't get dark until 10pm here in summer! Stark contrast to winter in London. We're staying with Ed and Sue who rent a gorgeous little flat in a really nice part of town. It only takes 40 minutes to walk into the centre of London from here, has several nearby tube stations, is leafy and reasonably quiet and has access to a trendy stretch ... read more

As Nikki and I decided to have an almost stress free wedding by going to Sweden, just the two of us, to get married there we thought we’d have a wedding reception back home in the UK to celebrate with friends and family. But being that we had the most untraditional wedding ever we thought that we should keep the ‘untraditional’ theme by having not one but two wedding receptions, the first of which we had in our garden over four months after our actual wedding. Why did we have such a big gap between our wedding and the reception? To wait for good weather of course and we were lucky that we actually had good weather plus if we'd have had it in February we wouldn't have been able to make a very big announcement ... read more

Here we go. In a week’s time we will be on a plane, heading to Kuala Lumpur. There are still some things to do, like storing our stuff, packing our backpacks but we are pretty much there. Before we actually leave I just wanted to take this opportunity and write a “Q&A” section. Trust me, same questions have been asked over and over - some of them I would never ask. Q: Where are you going to? A: we are heading to South East Asia and India. Check out the map on the main page Q: How long for? A: We don’t know. We have a budget and we will have to wait and see how long it lasts. I am hoping we can do a year. Q: Are you going to work? A: See, this ... read more

To begin this blog we really must start at the beginning, which means the arrival at Heathrow airport on the 1st of December. Many people said to us that it never snows in London, that it is cold and miserable and full of grey sludge. They could not have been more wrong! What we saw the moment we emerged from the airport underground was a winter wonderland. Snow was everywhere and we had arrived at the beginning of one of the coldest London Decembers on record. Our trip on the Picadilly line into London central took us through quaint London suburbs which were covered in white powder neither of us had seen before; snow. The rustic outer suburbs of London were covered in snow and it added to the charm we had come to expect from ... read more

With just over a week to go my mood changes from minute to minute. I'm excited, I'm nervous, I'm sad to be leaving everyone I know for so long and I'm panicking that I haven't got everything ready. But mostly, I really, really can't wait :) I start my trip in Delhi, India and with only 3 weeks to explore such a large and varied country I'm sure I will have lots of stories to share. Roll on November...... read more

Hey all. It's been awhile since the last blog, sorry about that. Well, Allie and I spent 4 great days in London. We got there around 7am from an overnight bus. Lemme tell ya, one thing we will absolutely not do in any future traveling is travel overnight or early morning by bus. It is way too exhausting. We didn't get much sleep again and arrived at Victoria Station around morning rush hour. The Victoria Station is in a 'posh' part of town. It is really close to Buckingham Palace, a close walk to the Houses of Parliment, etc. I will get to that later. One of the things about that particular station is that it is a main hub where a lot of the tube lines meet and people can transfer to different lines, trains, ... read more

So, the big question is: Why Backpacking? Well, I got bored of having too much money, power and high status in society and decided to go on a fun-filled, hill tribe-visiting exotic debauchery staying in 5* hotels, ocean cruisers..You know usual story. In reality, I kinda didn't pass my probation period at work - thank God, we gave up our flat with my roomies and I thought, dude, this is time I should do something different with my life - yet again - and spend all that hard-earned money now before I get way too old to do stuff like this! In bullet points: Friday, lost job. Saturday, sad. Sunday, flights booked. I was actually lucky to have lost my job, as it gave me enough time to arrange all that crap that I had no ... read more

What a long day we had yesterday! Mariel was still sick, so Lauren and I adventured to "the sea" with her cousins Alex and Adie. We went to the town of Brighton which was very, very cute. There were streets lined with shops--vintage clothing shops, music shops, candy shops, bakeries--everything! Alex, the older cousin who is now 25, went to the university in Brighton so for him it was his home away from home. We had to take a bus, the Tube, and then another overground-train, to get there, but it was worth it. The boys wanted to take us to Brighton because there was this HUGE gay pride festival going on--for free (everything in London/England seems to be free!). I feel like living in Santa Cruz, visiting San Francisco often, we know how proud and ... read more
